A successful national program to assure sanitary quality of molluscan shellfish requires a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency governmental training, data collection, policy development and management effort in collaboration with members of the shellfish industry. The Tanbi Wetlands and other estuaries of Gambia support shellfisheries for oysters, Crassostrea tulipa, and the senile ark, Senelia senilis, conducted by the TRY Oyster Women’s Association. With low shellfish prices and a small local market, a Gambian National Shellfish Sanitation Program (GNSSP) was begun as a means to boost consumer confidence and allow market access to Gambia’s robust seasonal international tourism trade. Pathogenic Vibrios are becoming an increasing problem for shellfish producers in North America and elsewhere. This paper reviews current research into the pathogenic nature of Vibrios and provides some practical advice for avoiding the propagation of Vibrios on shellfish farms nd in wild harvest molluscan shellfish.

Four strains of diatoms were isolated from the waters of Kendari Bay in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, including strains of Melosira moniliformis, Chaetoceros, sp. and a larger species that is likely to be Tetraselmis weissflogii. Isolated strains have exhibited a wide range of salinity tolerances in the 20 to 35 psu range. Strains of isolated phytoplankton were able to reach high densities consistent with strains suitable for use as aquaculture feeds. One strain Kbl-3 attained lipid content of 22.3 percent per gram dry weight at salinity of 35 psu, suggesting that it may be a good feed for shrimp larvae. Most …

Prices of raw molluscan shellfish in different countries around the world are tied to perceived risk of becoming ill if consumed. Wholesale prices of oysters in the southern New England from 1880 to 2010 are analyzed in relation to introduction of flush toilets and sewer systems in the early 20th Century, the initiation of the US National Shellfish Sanitation Program in 1925 and renewed consumer interest in consuming raw shellfish in the latter half of the 20th Century.

Tissue-associated bacterial community profiles generated using a nested polymerase chain reaction–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) approach and culture-dependent and culture-independent isolation techniques were compared. Oyster samples were collected from 2 harvest areas along the coast of Maine, in the United States. Profiles from both isolation strategies were evaluated using Sorensen’s index of similarity and cluster analysis of gel banding patterns. Cultureindependent profiles were further evaluated using the Shannon diversity index. In general, the culture-dependent strategy resulted in a greater number of bands within a profile. Postharvest surveillance for Vibrio vulnificus by a commercial processing facility was conducted from May 2001 to September 2003. Harvest areas included the Delaware Bay, Long Island Sound and Prince Edward Island. Occurrence followed a seasonal distribution. Low densities were observed in June, increased through August, and became rare by September. Given the ubiquitous nature of marine Vibrios, it was not surprising to find V. vulnificus everywhere, which was investigated. Observations confirmed the importance of strict time/temperature and product handling practices by shellfish harvesters, dealers and processors. Mishandling led to a potentially dangerous and uncharacteristically high V. vulnificus observation.

Epidermal surfaces of the ophiouroid Ophionereis annulata (Le Conte) were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Microvilli, which are characteristic of many transport epithelia, are present on the epidermal surfaces. Epidermal surfaces of freshly-collected brittlestars were compared with brittlestars that were maintained in the laboratory for 48 hours in fresh seawater and in seawater enriched with 20uM glycine. Very few bacteria were observed on the surface of the freshly-collected animals or on animals maintained in the laboratory in fresh seawater. The epidermal surfaces of animals maintained in seawater enriched with 20 uM glycine showed extensive mats of coccoid and bacilloid bacteria. …
