Listeria Monocytogenes In The Environment Of Livestock In South Dakota, James W. Neiles Jan 1978

Listeria Monocytogenes In The Environment Of Livestock In South Dakota, James W. Neiles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation is to study the incidence of Listeria monocytogenes in the environment of livestock in South Dakota. The data accumulated from these studies will provide information as to its natural habitat, mode of transmission and factors responsible for its incidence.

Methodology Development For The Study Of The Anaerobic Bacterial Flora Of Bovine Feces, Donald G. Kirsch Jan 1978

Methodology Development For The Study Of The Anaerobic Bacterial Flora Of Bovine Feces, Donald G. Kirsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intestinal bacterial flora of an animal has a considerable influence on the physiology of that animal. Some bacteria of the intestine are pathogenic and can initiate infections if they gain access to a susceptible individual. Some of the intestinal bacteria can produce potent carcinogens in vitro and can presumably do this also in vivo. Food passing through the alimentary tract of an animal is also chemically modified through the enzymatic action of the bacterial flora. The animal is also protected from some enteric infections through the antagonistic and competitive actions of the established organisms of the normal bacterial flora. …

An Electron Microscopic Investigation Of Bovine Abortion, Hans A. Draayer Jan 1978

An Electron Microscopic Investigation Of Bovine Abortion, Hans A. Draayer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bovine abortion continues to cause economic loss to farmers and ranchers. In South Dakota, monetary loss from bovine abortion has been estimated at 4 to 4.8 million dollars annually. (31) Brucellosis was once considered the major cause of bovine abortion. Since the prevalence of brucellosis has been reduced to less than 1% of the total United States cattle population, there has been an increase in demand for laboratory assistance in the diagnosis of the causes of bovine abortion. With the present day technology in microbiology, histology, and serology, a confirmed identification of the causative agent of bovine abortion can be …

Rotaviral Enteritis In Gnotobiotic Pigs: A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study, Marcus W. Johnshoy Jan 1978

Rotaviral Enteritis In Gnotobiotic Pigs: A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study, Marcus W. Johnshoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study were: 1. To experimentally reproduce rotaviral diarrhea in gnotobiotic pigs. 2. To determine the appearance of the normal intestine by scanning electron and light microscopy. 3. To compare by scanning electron and light microscopy the appearance of segments from different areas of intestine and to determine the development, location, and severity of rotaviral lesions in gnotobiotic pigs.

Nonsporing Anaerobic Bacteria In Foods, Sylvia M. Huppler Jan 1978

Nonsporing Anaerobic Bacteria In Foods, Sylvia M. Huppler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anaerobic non spore forming bacteria are not detected in routine food examinations, and their occurrences in foods has seldom been reported in the literature. The purpose of this study is to determine the occurrence of non-spore forming anaerobes, the identification of the isolates found, and the possible growth and multiplication in foods which might contribute to spoilage or food illness.

Partial Characterization And Comparison Of Rhizobia From Astragalus Flexuosus Glycyrrhiza Lepidota, And Trifolium Spp., Elmer L. Eide Jan 1978

Partial Characterization And Comparison Of Rhizobia From Astragalus Flexuosus Glycyrrhiza Lepidota, And Trifolium Spp., Elmer L. Eide

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biological nitrogen fixation, a means of alleviating our increasing dependence on synthesized nitrogen fertilizers, is being studied with renewed interest. Production of nitrogen fertilizer requires large amounts of natural gas and other non-renewable energy sources, while the energy for biological nitrogen fixation is derived either directly or indirectly from photosynthesis. With only limited supplies of natural gas and an increasing population, and thus increasing demand for food, the advantages and even necessity of understanding and enhancing biological nitrogen is obvious. The nitrogenase enzyme complex which catalyzes the reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia is possessed by a limited number of species …

Partial Purification Of Heat Stable Enterotoxin Produced By Escherichia Coli Isolated From A Case Of Porcine Colibacillosis, Lee Ann Zochert Swanson Jan 1978

Partial Purification Of Heat Stable Enterotoxin Produced By Escherichia Coli Isolated From A Case Of Porcine Colibacillosis, Lee Ann Zochert Swanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colibacillosis (CB) in livestock is an economically important disease caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. It is estimated that nearly one third of all baby pigs born in South Dakota die prior to weaning, and one fourth of these deaths is believed to be caused by CB (62). Similarly, it has been stated that 6 to 20% of calves born alive die from this disease (3). The term colibacillosis encompasses a group of diseases caused by E. coli in neonatal and weaned animals and humans (3). The several different types of CB are due to the differences in tissue localization …
