Background: The purpose of the present study is to investigate the expression levels of STAT3, pSTAT3, MMP-7 and VEGF in colorectal adenocarcinoma, and also to determine association with the clinico-pathological parameters and co-expression of these genes.
Methods: An immunohistochemical method was used to evaluate the expression of MMP-7 and VEGF genes in 93 archival tissues whereas STAT3 and pSTAT3 expression was determined in 75 cases.
Results: Overexpression of STAT3 was detected in 26.7% (20/75), pSTAT3 in 13.4% (10/75), MMP-7 in 38.8% (36/93) and VEGF in 59.2% (55/93) of the colorectal carcinomas. STAT3, MMP-7 and VEGF immunopositivity were significantly correlated with …

Introduction: Systematic reviews suggest that a longer duration of breast-feeding is associated with a reduction in the risk of later overweight and obesity. Most studies examining breast-feeding in relation to adiposity have not used longitudinal analysis. In our study, we aimed to examine early infant feeding and adiposity risk in a longitudinal cohort from birth to young adulthood using new as well as published data.
Methods: Data from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study in Perth, W.A., Australia, were used to examine associations between breast-feeding and measures of adiposity at 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 17, and …
How Do Patients With Advanced Cancer Cope With An Uncertain Disease Trajectory? Implications For Grief Counselling, Elizabeth A. Lobb
How Do Patients With Advanced Cancer Cope With An Uncertain Disease Trajectory? Implications For Grief Counselling, Elizabeth A. Lobb
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
A growing number of cancer patients are living longer with incurable disease. This paper describes strategies that patients use to cope with the uncertain trajectory of their disease. Twenty-seven patients with a prognosis of 12 months were recruited from the oncology and palliative care service at three metropolitan Sydney hospitals. A semi-structured face-to-face interview was conducted, which was audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. The patients coped with the uncertain trajectory of their disease through avoidance, maintaining a normal life, comparing themselves favourably with others in a similar situation and remaining positive. Participants indicated that they did not wish referral for psychological …
'Workshops In Healing' For Senior Medical Students: 5 Year Overview And Appraisal, John Kearsley, Elizabeth Lobb
'Workshops In Healing' For Senior Medical Students: 5 Year Overview And Appraisal, John Kearsley, Elizabeth Lobb
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
We report upon the design, content and feedback from an interactive, experiential series of Workshops in Healing for senior medical students. Fifty-six final year medical students enrolled in 2×3 h workshops designed around the core themes of ‘physician know thyself’ (Workshop 1) and ‘confronting suffering’ (Workshop 2). Of the 56 students who initially enrolled, 48 students completed both workshops and provided a written openended reflection of their learning experience. The study, undertaken over a consecutive 5-year period (2008–2012), employed an emergent, qualitative design using thematic analysis of the reflective comments. We found that the design and content of both workshops …

Palliative Care Nurses' Recognition And Assessment Of Delirium Symptoms: A Qualitative Study Using Critical Incident Technique, Annmarie Hosie, Meera Agar, Elizabeth Lobb, Patricia M. Davidson, Jane Phillips
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
Delirium is prevalent in palliative care inpatient settings and management is often challenging. Despite nurses’ integral patient care role, little is known about palliative care nurses’ capacity to recognise, assess and respond to patients’ delirium symptoms. Objective: To explore the experiences, views and practices of inpatient palliative care nurses in delirium recognition and assessment. Settings and participants: 30 nurses from nine Australian specialist palliative care inpatient services. Design and methods: Critical incident technique (CIT) guided a series of semi-structured interviews. Prior to interviews participants were given a vignette of a palliative care inpatient with an unrecognised hypoactive delirium, to prompt …
Exercise Can Improve Physical Self Perceptions In Adolescents With Low Motor Competence, Fleur Mcintyre, Paola Chivers, Elizabeth Rose, Beth Hands
Exercise Can Improve Physical Self Perceptions In Adolescents With Low Motor Competence, Fleur Mcintyre, Paola Chivers, Elizabeth Rose, Beth Hands
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
Adolescents with low motor competence have diminished perceptions of their physical self and tend to avoid physical activities. This study examined the outcomes of an exercise intervention that focused on improving aerobic fitness, strength, and self-perceptions in the physical domain in adolescents with poor motor coordination. The sample included 35 adolescents with low motor competence, comprising boys (n = 25) and girls (n = 10) ranging in age from 13 to 17 years, who attended two sessions per week in the 13 week exercise intervention study (AMP it up). Physical self-perceptions were measured before and after the intervention …
The Challenge To Deliver Cost Effective Care For Patients With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Julie Quinlivan
The Challenge To Deliver Cost Effective Care For Patients With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Julie Quinlivan
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
The global rise in obesity and gestational weight gain, along with recent trials demonstrating improved pregnancy and neonatal outcomes associated with the treatment of mild hyperglycaemia, have resulted in a clinical challenge to deliver cost effective healthcare to manage the epidemic of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Whilst clinicians now have clear criteria by which to diagnose GDM, and the glycaemic targets to achieve, less clear are the pathways to achieve these outcomes in a cost effective manner. The value of using allied health providers such as dieticians compared to less trained patient educators, the effectiveness of individualised versus group dietician …

Introduction
Avascular necrosis of femoral head (ANFH) is a progressive disease that often leads to hip joint dysfunction and even disability in young patients. Although the standard treatment, which is core decompression, has the advantage of minimal invasion, the efficacy is variable. Recent studies have shown that implantation of bone marrow containing osteogenic precursors into necrotic lesion of ANFH may be promising for the treatment of ANFH.
Methods
A prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the effect of bone-marrow buffy coat (BBC) grafting combined with core decompression for the treatment of ANFH. Forty-five patients (53 hips) with …
