Organochlorine Levels In Seawater And Sediment From The Florida Gulf Coast, If Present, Are Low. , Richard B. Philp
Richard B. Philp
Seawater and sediment from the Florida panhandle coast were assayed for a panel of 28 organochlorine insecticides and PCBs. No samples exeeded the detection limits of the analytical technique, which were well below levels reported for other ocean locales. Organochlorine levels in this area of the Gulf must be very low. This does not preclude their biomagnificatioon up the food web.

Acsm's Metabolic Calculations Handbook, Stephen Glass, Greg Dwyer
Acsm's Metabolic Calculations Handbook, Stephen Glass, Greg Dwyer
Stephen C Glass
This handbook provides a step-by-step approach to using metabolic equations, from basic math principles to applying the equations to an exercise plan. Chapters focus separately on each equation, provide an easy-to-follow process of solving, and demonstrate the varied uses of the equation in clinical as well as fitness settings.
Each chapter includes a set of problems that focus on real-world applications of the equation. Step-by-step problem solution explanations are provided at the end of each chapter. A comprehensive exam at the end of the book tests the reader's skill in using the equations.

Neuroprotective And Disease-Modifying Effects Of The Ketogenic Diet, Maciej Gasior, Michael A. Rogawski, Adam L. Hartman
Michael A. Rogawski
The ketogenic diet has been in clinical use for over 80 years, primarily for the symptomatic treatment of epilepsy. A recent clinical study has raised the possibility that exposure to the ketogenic diet may confer long-lasting therapeutic benefits for patients with epilepsy. Moreover, there is evidence from uncontrolled clinical trials and studies in animal models that the ketogenic diet can provide symptomatic and disease-modifying activity in a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, and may also be protective in traumatic brain injury and stroke. These observations are supported by studies in animal models and isolated …

Homeland Security: Engaging The Frontlines - Symposium Proceedings, George H. Baker, Cheryl J. Elliott

The rise of the American homeland security endeavor under the leadership of the new Department of Homeland Security has been heralded by several major national strategy documents. These documents have served to organize efforts at top levels within the government and industry. However, the national strategy guidance is not getting to many organizations and people at the grass-roots level who can make the most difference in preventing attacks, protecting systems, and recovering from catastrophic events, viz. the general citizenry, private infrastructure owners, and local governments. To better understand grass-roots issues and solutions, James Madison University, in cooperation with the Federal …

AIM: Hepatitis C virus often establishes chronic infections. Recent studies suggest that viral and bacterial infections are more common in HCV-infected patients compared to controls. Pathogens are recognized by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) to shape adaptive and innate immune responses.
METHODS: In this study, to assess the ability of HCV-infected host to recognize invading pathogens, we investigated Toll-like receptor expression in innate (monocytes) and adaptive (T cells) immune cells by real-time PCR.
RESULTS: We determined that RNA levels for TLRs 2, 6. 7, 8, 9 and 10 mRNA levels were upregulated in both monocytes and T cells in HCV-infected patients compared …

Pka-Mediated Erk1/2 Inactivation And Hsp70 Gene Expression Following Exercise, C.W. Melling, Matthew Krause, Earl Noble
Jamie Melling
Exercise induces the expression of the cardioprotective protein, Hsp70, through the activation of its transcription factor HSF1. Recently, we reported that administration of a protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor suppressed exercise-induced hsp70 gene expression, suggesting a role for PKA in the regulation of HSF1 activation in vivo. While the mechanism by which PKA regulates HSF1 is unclear, studies in vitro have reported that HSF1 is phosphorylated on two serine residues by mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs); ERK1/2 (ser307) and JNK/SAPK (ser363). As PKA is a regulator of these protein kinases, the current study examined the role of PKA in their …

We have developed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique for imaging Feridex (superparamagnetic iron oxide [SPIO])-labeled islets of Langerhans using a standard clinical 1.5-Tesla (T) scanner and employing steady-state acquisition imaging sequence (3DFIESTA). Both porcine and rat islets were labeled with SPIO by a transfection technique using a combination of poly-l-lysine and electroporation. Electron microscopy demonstrated presence of SPIO particles within the individual islet cells, including beta-cells and particles trapped between cell membranes. Our labeling method produced a transfection rate of 860 pg to 3.4 ng iron per islet, dependent on the size of the islet. The labeling procedure did …

Lactobacillus Vaginal Microbiota Of Women Attending A Reproductive Health Care Service In Benin City, Nigeria., Kingsley Anukam, Emmanuel Osazuwa, Ijeoma Ahonkhai, Gregor Reid
Kingsley C Anukam
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether Lactobacillus species found in African women differ substantially to those of Caucasian decent, described in previous studies. The vaginal microbiota play an important role in female health, and when the naturally dominant lactobacilli are displaced resulting in bacterial vaginosis (BV), the host is more at risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. METHODS: Vaginal samples were collected from 241 healthy, pre-menopausal Nigerian women, which were then Gram stained for Nugent scoring. Microbial DNA was extracted, amplified using PCR and Lactobacillus primers, and processed by Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE). …

Auditory Inhibitory Gating In Medial Prefrontal Cortex: Single Unit And Local Field Potential Analysis, Howard C. Cromwell
Auditory Inhibitory Gating In Medial Prefrontal Cortex: Single Unit And Local Field Potential Analysis, Howard C. Cromwell
Howard Casey Cromwell
Medial prefrontal cortex is a crucial region involved in inhibitory processes. Damage to the medial prefrontal cortex can lead to loss of normal inhibitory control over motor, sensory, emotional and cognitive functions. The goal of the present study was to examine the basic properties of inhibitory gating in this brain region in rats. Inhibitory gating has recently been proposed as a neurophysiological assay for sensory filters in higher brain regions that potentially enable or disable information throughput. This perspective has important clinical relevance due to the findings that gating is dramatically impaired in individuals with emotional and cognitive impairments (i.e. …
