The Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption In Rats To Morphine And Codeine Intake And The Metabolism Of Dopamine, Hsiu Fen Liu Dec 1974

The Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption In Rats To Morphine And Codeine Intake And The Metabolism Of Dopamine, Hsiu Fen Liu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effects of morphine and codeine free-choice alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Intakes of a 10% alcohol solution in milliliters per 100 gm. of body weight were on recorded weekly. No difference was found in the alcohol intake of rats given either a morphine-supplemented diet (0.01% of the diet) or daily injection of morphine sulfate (2 mg./kg.); however, there was a significant lower intake of water (p < .05) in those rats fed the diet with morphine. Total fluid consumption of both groups given the morphine-supplemented diet and daily injection of morphine sulfate was decreased (p < .05). It was found that morphine did not affect the percentage of total fluid consumed as alcohol or the weight gain.

Two levels of codeine phosphate (10 mg./kg. and 20 mg./kg.) were injected subcutaneously into rats twice a day. It was observed that the codeine significantly decreased alcohol intake in rats …

The Effect Of Diet On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Linda L. Hoover Aug 1974

The Effect Of Diet On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Linda L. Hoover

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Two series of experiments were conducted in order to determine the effects of diet on neutrophilic phagocytosis. The first series was designed to determine the effects of varying amounts of oral glucose on phagocytosis. Blood samples from 6 to 8 subjects were drawn at fasting, and at various time periods following ingestion of 12.5, 25, 50, 75, and 100 grams of glucose. In the second series of experiments, blood samples were taken from 11 subjects after an overnight fast and 2 hours following ingestion of one of 4 different liquid diets, which included the following: the meal (I), consisting of …

Bone Regeneration Over Submerged Dental Roots In Dogs, Roger Lee Plata Jun 1974

Bone Regeneration Over Submerged Dental Roots In Dogs, Roger Lee Plata

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nonendodontically treated roots were submerged 1.5 to 2.0 mm. below the alveolar crest in three dogs. Twelve roots were treated in this manner. Regeneration of alveolar bone can be seen in three weeks with complete bone coverage in five weeks. A complete lamina dura can be seen around the amputated roots.

Bone failed to regenerate over two of the twelve roots. In one case there was delayed healing due to the early loss of some sutures. A sinus tract developed connecting the oral environment with the contents of the pulp. This led to bone resorption and a necrotic pulp. In …

The Deoxythymidine Kinase-Deoxythymidylate Kinase Enzymes In Salmonella Potsdam And Escherichia Coli K12 Infected With Bacteriophage P3, James D. Kettering Jun 1974

The Deoxythymidine Kinase-Deoxythymidylate Kinase Enzymes In Salmonella Potsdam And Escherichia Coli K12 Infected With Bacteriophage P3, James D. Kettering

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Metabolic alterations in bacterial hosts caused by virus infections have been studied for the last thirty years. The virulent T-even bacteriophages have been studied the most and have been shown to be responsible for the induction of a number of new, virus-specific enzymes that are necessary for successful phage growth. In addition, the activity of other host enzymes present prior to infection has been found to be increased by T-even infection. Temperate bacteriophages, being more difficult to work with than the virulent viruses, have not been studied as extensively. This is especially true for metabolic studies, since most temperate phage …

The Developmental Fine Structure Of Pacinian Corpuscles, Pedro B. Nava Jun 1974

The Developmental Fine Structure Of Pacinian Corpuscles, Pedro B. Nava

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A preliminary light microscopic study of the mouse hind limb revealed a group of about 20 Pacinian corpuscles extending from the mid-region of the fibula to the tibio-fibular fusion strategically located for the possible sensing of bone-transmitted vibration.

The fine structure of the corpuscles is described in four stages: primordial or prenatal (19 and 20 days); early differentiation (1-8 days postnatal); differentiated corpuscle (9, 10, 12, 14 and 21 days postnatal); and adult (28 days old).

The corpuscles commence development during the 19th prenatal day. The corpuscle then consists of a nerve ending surrounded by sheath-cells which appear to be …

Effects Of Cocaine, Nicotine And Diet On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Zaida Raquel Cordero Loayza May 1974

Effects Of Cocaine, Nicotine And Diet On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Zaida Raquel Cordero Loayza

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The consumption of alcohol is a problem not only in this country (U.S.), but also in many other places in the world. Thus we find the Indians in Peru, Bolivia and other neighboring countries (Ecuador and northern part of Argentina) consuming alcohol to the point that they become alcoholics, in addition to this they also chew coca leaves, plant from which cocaine is extracted.

In an effort to establish the cause for this behavior, we put Sprague-Dawley albino rats on either a poor or good basal diet. Once every other day the rats were injected with a solution of cocaine. …

Histologic Comparison Of Apical Tissue Response To Endodontic Overfills With Gutta Percha And Grossman's Sealer Vs. Sargenti Method (N₂), Donald L. Brewer May 1974

Histologic Comparison Of Apical Tissue Response To Endodontic Overfills With Gutta Percha And Grossman's Sealer Vs. Sargenti Method (N₂), Donald L. Brewer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study compared endodontic overfills of N2 and gutta percha-Grossman's Sealer from a histopathological basis. The study employed four male rhesus monkeys and a sample of 31 teeth.

The most obvious difference between the samples filled with N2 and the gutta percha-Grossman's Sealer samples was the recurring presence of ankylosis in the N2-treated teeth. Results also included bone necrosis, inflammation and root and bone resorption.

The N2 samples were considered to have evidenced greater violence of reaction apically.
