A Data Repository For Minimal Effects Of Oyster Aquaculture On Water Quality: Examples From Southern Chesapeake Bay, Jessica Turner, Grace M. Massey, M. Lisa Kellogg, Carl Friedrichs

The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of oyster aquaculture on water quality, sediment quality, and hydrodynamics at select sites in southern Chesapeake Bay. To this end, information was gathered over the course of approximately one year from February 2017 to October 2017 at four operating commercial farms. Farms were sampled during spring, summer, and fall seasons during times of oyster filtration activity when temperatures were greater than 10oC. Aquaculture sites differed in environmental setting, in terms of their exposure to waves and resulting sediment characteristics. Sites had mesohaline salinities (ranging from 15-22 psu) and …

Deep pelagic habitat from the entire Gulf of Mexico (GOM) was classified using the deviation of sea surface height (SSH) from mean SSH for the entire GOM and water temperature at 300 m water depth, founded on ocean condition data from the 1/25° GOM HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). Pelagic habitats were segregated into anticyclonic, mixed boundaries, and common water units – all of which likely produce varying levels of forage for deep-sea fauna and may be trophic drivers. Seawater was collected and filtered for microbiome and bacterioplankton sequencing and analyses at various depths during two planned DEEPEND cruise expeditions to the GOM. Filters were stored and then processed for total environmental genomic DNA according to standard methods (see earthmicrobiome.org). 16S rRNA amplicon libraries covering the V4 hypervariable region was generated with universal PCR primers and then sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq DNA sequencing platform. Bioinformatics analyses in QIIME and R was used to quality filter and assess microbial community diversity and taxonomic composition. The contents of the dataset are an assessment of the seasonal and interannual changes in distributions of temperature, salinity, density, oxygen, chlorophyll and CDOM fluorescence, turbidity, and Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Zooplankton have high temporal and spatial variability. Therefore, they need to be assessed before oil impact and regularly thereafter, to interpret what changes are causally related to oil spills. We surveyed plankton using bongo net tows and the USF SIPPER imaging system to evaluate the variation in plankton abundance on the west Florida shelf and the northern Gulf of Mexico. Seasonal CTD, chlorophyll, nutrient, and zooplankton abundance data from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and the west Florida shelf. Developed new algorithms for data mining SIPPER (Shadow Imaging Particle Profiler and Evaluation Recorder) camera particle imaging data.
