Florida Bay, the shallow lagoon separating mainland Florida and the Florida Keys, USA, is experiencing an unprecedented series of ecological disturbances. In 1991, following reports of other ecosystem perturbations, we observed widespread and persistent blooms of cyanobacteria that coincided with the decimation of sponge communities over hundreds of square kilometers. Juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus, among other animals, rely on sponges for shelter; the impact of sponge loss on the abundance of lobsters and their use of shelter, in particular, has been dramatic. The loss of sponges on 27 experimental sites in hard bottom habitat in central Florida Bay …
A Review Of Ministerial Policy Guidelines For Rock Lobster Processing In Western Australia From The Working Group Appointed By The Minister For Fisheries And Chaired By Peter Rich, Peter Rich
Fisheries management papers
The rock lobster processing industry in Western Australia has a long history of management. Whilst management of the industry through the Fisheries Department has obviously been successful in helping to build the rock lobster industry into one of the State's major export industries, this approach is not without problems. With the introduction of the Fisheries Management Act 1994, the Minister for Fisheries deemed it appropriate to appoint an expert group to review the existing regulation of the rock lobster processing sector, draft the necessary guidelines to assist the Executive Director of the Fisheries Department make decisions on rock lobster processing …
Immunocytes Of The Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus) And West Indian Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) : Morphologic Characterizations And Correlations Between Healthy And Disease States Under Free-Ranging And Captive Conditions, Gregory D. Bossart
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interest in the health of marine mammals has increased due, in part, to the attention given to human impact on the marine environment. Recent mass strandings of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and rising mortalities of the endangered Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) have raised questions on the extent to which pollution, infectious disease, "stress," and captivity influence the immune system of these animals. This study has provided the first in-depth characterization of immunocytes in the peripheral blood of dolphins (n=180) and manatees (n=56). Immunocyte morphology and baseline values were determined in clinically normal animals …

Upper Ocean Variability On The Equator In The Pacific At 170-Degrees-W, Robert H. Weisberg, Stanley P. Hayes
Marine Science Faculty Publications
The monitoring of upper ocean velocity, temperature, and surface winds at 0 degrees, 170 degrees W was initiated in May 1988 as part of the Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere program. Located between regions of warm (cold) sea surface temperature in the western (eastern) equatorial Pacific, this west central region exhibits large interannual variations in surface wind stress associated with the El Nino-Southern Oscillation. Here we report on the first 3 years of data collected at 0 degrees, 170 degrees W, exclusive of an El Nino event. The west central Pacific is a region through which the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) accelerates downstream. …

Final Report Biological Monitoring Of The Hollywood-Hallandale Beach Renourishment, Richard Dodge, Walter Goldberg, Charles Messing, Steven C. Hess
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
A four-year study was undertaken to survey Broward County, Florida (southeast Florida) coral communities and infaunal marine biota in relation to possible effects from the Hollywood- Hallandale Beach renourishment project. Beach restoration involves dredging sand from offshore deposits and placing it on eroded beaches, activities which may cause sedimentation and turbidity. Coral reefs were assessed using transect and quadrat surveys at a total of 15 stations, unevenly distributed between dredging impact (n=9) and control (n=6) areas to characterize and quantify populations of sponges, gorgonians, scleractinian corals, as well as other less well represented groups. In addition, the infauna of sand …

The Impact Of The New Management Package On Smaller Operators In The Western Rock Lobster Fishery, Ross Gould
The Impact Of The New Management Package On Smaller Operators In The Western Rock Lobster Fishery, Ross Gould
Fisheries management papers
For the 1993/94 western rock lobster fishing season several new management strategies were introduced. The objective of the changes to the management package was to protect the rock lobster fishery. It was also to provide sufficient breeding stock to ensure viability of the industry. The most significant new measure was a temporary (two seasons) 18 percent pot reduction. Other changes were also made. There were considered sound reasons for reviewing and changing the previous management package. Despite this, some fishermen were critical of the new management package, and claimed that it unfairly disadvantaged smaller operators. Against this background, the Department …

West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery Management Plan 1995 - Draft For Public Comment, M. Moran
West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery Management Plan 1995 - Draft For Public Comment, M. Moran
Fisheries management papers
The purpose of this management plan is to regulate fishing for rock lobsters (Family Palimuridae) in waters off the west coast of Western Australia such that the breeding stock of rock lobsters is maintained at a level known to have generated adequate recruitment of young lobsters in the past. This management plan does not constitute a change in the management arrangements for the rock lobster fishery. It essentially replaces the West Coast Rock Lobster Limited Entry Fishery Notice 1993 made under the Fisheries Act 1905 and makes the required changes to wording and structure necessitated by the proclamation of the …
Bag And Size Limit Fishing Regulations From Around Australia - Current Information As At 1 July, 1995 - Third Australasian Fisheries Managers Conference, Rottnest Island, Wa, F. B. Prokop
Fisheries management papers
This paper was originally prepared for the first National Fisheries Managers Conference in 1993. It is now updated and includes the current bag and size limits from around Australia as at 1 July, 1995. It is fairly obvious from this paper that there is a need for more cooperation between the states, particularly for species which have wide distributions. However, regional solutions can be a good approach for specific management needs, while general rules can be made more consistent in a number of cases.
Functional Significance Of Varicies In The Muricid Gastropod Ceratostoma Foliatum, Thomas H. Carefoot, Deborah A. Donovan
Functional Significance Of Varicies In The Muricid Gastropod Ceratostoma Foliatum, Thomas H. Carefoot, Deborah A. Donovan
Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
Functional significance of varices in the muricid gastropod Ceratostoma foliatum was investigated from the standpoints of (1) frequency of landing in the two upside-down orientations after short vertical falls of less than five body lengths through seawater and energy costs of righting from these upside-down positions, and (2) scaling relationships of varix areas with other body dimensions. Field manipulations showed that C.foliatum occupied habitats that mostly permit short falls of less than five body lengths upon dislodgment, as might occur during predation by fish. After short vertical falls in the laboratory, animals landed 48% of the time on their aperture …

Trophic Transfer Of Fatty Acids, Sterols, And A Triterpenoid Alcohol Between Bacteria, A Ciliate, And The Copepod Acartia Tonsa, Melissa C. Ederington, George B. Mcmanus, H. Rodger Harvey
OES Faculty Publications
The incorporation of lipids into the copepod Acartia tonsa and its eggs was measured when it was fed either a bacterivorous ciliate (Pleuronema sp.) or a diatom (Thalassiosira weissflogii). Egg production was 10-fold higher on the diatom diet, whereas hatch success of eggs was the same for algal and ciliate diets. Adult copepods fed diatoms contained more total fatty acid and sterols than copepods fed the ciliate diet, and individual lipids reflected the dietary source. Eggs from diatom-fed copepods had fewer fatty acids but more sterols than eggs from copepods on a ciliate diet. Ciliate-fed copepods and …

In situ pigment and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) data from two distinct hydrographic regions of the western English Channel are used to explore the possible marine DOC contamination of the past satellite estimates of phytoplankton biomass. To compare with field measurements, the individual spectral contributions of DOC, pigments, and water to the total diffuse attenuation coefficient, Kpar, are summed on a quantum basis within stratified waters near Plymouth, England; and for the spectrally averaged diffuse attenuation coefficient, Kd, on an energy basis within tidally mixed waters near Roscofif, France. In addition, coastal zone color scanner (CZCS) …

Management Of The Northern Demersal Scalefish Fishery, Jane Fowler
Fisheries management papers
In mid 1994, the Fisheries Department of Western Australia announced that it would prepare a discussion paper setting out options for future management of the demersal scalefish fishery off the Kimberley coast. This paper, which was to be the start of a wider consultative process, was also to include options for possible further development of the trap and line fisheries. This paper is only the first step in a process for developing formal long term management arrangements under the new fisheries legislation, the Fish Resources Management Act 1994. Its aim is to provide some background and to present some management …

Report On Future Management Options For The South West Trawl Limited Entry Fishery, South West Trawl Limited Entry Fishery Working Group
Fisheries management papers
As a result of community concern regarding trawling, the current management rules for the South West Trawl Limited Entry Fishery were finalised in February 1989 and the final plan was gazetted in October of that year. However, there was public disquiet about this trawling, and as a result of this disquiet, a research program was initiated by the Fisheries Department with funding received from both the Commonwealth and State Governments. The scientific report, "The impact of trawling for saucer scallops and western king prawns on the benthic communities in coastal waters off south-western Australia" by L J B Laurenson, P …

Management Options (Discussion Paper) For The Shark Bay Snapper Limited Entry Fishery, Shark Bay Snapper Limited Entry Fishery Working Group, Doug Bathgate
Fisheries management papers
At the Annual Management Meeting of the Shark Bay Snapper Limited Entry Fishery held on 22 July 1994 industry put forward a proposal that supplementary and non-transferable quota that was "lost" to the fishery when a licence holding non-transferable quota was transferred should be retained by the Fisheries Department and leased back to licence holders on an annual basis. As a result of this proposal and the fact that the management arrangements for the fishery are extremely complex and in need of simplification, the Minster for Fisheries approved the establishment of a Working Group to examine the lease-back proposal and …

Seasonal-Scale To Decadal-Scale Climatic Variability In Southwest Florida During The Middle Pliocene: Inferences From A Coralline Stable-Isotope Record, Leanne M. Roulier, Terrence M. Quinn
Marine Science Faculty Publications
We have generated a 49‐year‐long, high‐resolution, stable isotope record from a fossil coral, Solenastrea bournoni, to evaluate regional sea surface conditions during the middle Pliocene (3.0 ± 0.5 Ma) in southwest Florida. Continuous routing of the coral slab at an interval of 0.76 mm produced ∼5 to 6 samples per year. The annual cycle is well defined in δ18O and δ13C records confirming the average yearly growth rate estimated from density banding of 4 to 5 mm/yr. High‐density bands are synchronous with the highest δ18O and δ13C values for 79% and …
Tropical Instability Wave Kinematics: Observations From The Tropical Instability Wave Experiment, L. Qiao, Robert H. Weisberg
Tropical Instability Wave Kinematics: Observations From The Tropical Instability Wave Experiment, L. Qiao, Robert H. Weisberg
Marine Science Faculty Publications
The kinematics of planetary waves originating from instability of the nearsurface equatorial currents are reported on using velocity measurements from an array of acoustic Doppler current profilers deployed in the equatorial Pacific during the Tropical Instability Wave Experiment. A distinctive wave season was observed from August to December 1990, with wave energy confined primarily above the core of the Equatorial Undercurrent. Particle motions in the horizontal plane are described by eccentric ellipses oriented toward the north, but tilting into the cyclonic shear of the South Equatorial Current. The tilt is maximum near the surface just north of the equator and …
Optimization Approach To The Treatment Of Open Boundary-Conditions, I. Shulman, James K. Lewis
Optimization Approach To The Treatment Of Open Boundary-Conditions, I. Shulman, James K. Lewis
Faculty Publications
A solution to an optimization problem is developed that deals with minimizing a measure of difference between the values of observed and predicted variables at an open ocean boundary. Minimization is based on the change of the flux of energy through the open boundary. It is shown that many of the longwave radiation conditions that are commonly used in ocean modeling can be derived using this optimization criteria. However, the minimization process is seen to produce a modification of these radiation conditions in that they are multiplied by a coefficient, which allows the conditions to adapt to a change in …

The Best Available Information - Its Implications For Recreational Fisheries Management, F. B. Prokop
Fisheries management papers
Workshop at Second National Fisheries Managers Conference, Bribie Island, Queensland, October 18, 1994. Recreational fisheries management is one of the growth areas in Australian fisheries. The Australian Society for Fish Biology Workshop topic for its 1994 Conference was Recreational Fishing - What's the Catch. It was acknowledged at the ASFB conference that there were generally poor levels of information and for the lower value commercial and recreational fisheries there may be no way to gather definitive research data for the foreseeable future. However, in even the high profile fisheries, public perceptions, attitudes, and political will do not allow for the …

Although viruses from the marine environment have been enumerated, isolated, and characterized, there is little information on the abundance or global distribution of specific phage types. To this end, we studied the abundance and distribution of phages which infect a marine bacterium isolated from Tampa Bay (Florida, USA), tentatively identified (Microbial ID, Inc., Newark, Delaware, USA) as Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Using this host, we have isolated over 60 phages from the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa Bay, Florida Keys, and Oahu, Hawaii (USA). These isolates are all Myoviridae, with head sizes ranging from 50 +/- 0.0 to 65 +/- 4.2 nm …

The quantum yield ø of photosynthesis (mol C (mol photons)−1) was calculated at six depths for the waters of the Marine Light‐Mixed Layer (MLML) cruise of May 1991. As there were photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) but no spectral irradiance measurements for the primary production incubations, three ways are presented here for the calculation of the absorbed photons (AP) by phytoplankton for the purpose of calculating ø. The first is based on a simple, nonspectral model; the second is based on a nonlinear regression using measured PAR values with depth; and the third is derived through remote sensing measurements. …
