Psychometric Analysis Of A 9-Item M-Hooked-On Nicotine Checklist For Vaping Among College Students, Joshua B. Devine
Psychometric Analysis Of A 9-Item M-Hooked-On Nicotine Checklist For Vaping Among College Students, Joshua B. Devine
MSU Graduate Theses
Background: Adolescent participation in electronic vapor products (EVP) is on the rise and with it many new health concerns present themselves. EVP use tripled among high school and middle school students from 2013-2014 and has continued to grow. Previous nicotine related studies have shown that the earlier the age of initiation to nicotine, the higher likelihood to develop a nicotine dependence. Methods: Using the “Hooked on Nicotine Checklist” (HONC) current rates of nicotine dependence among college students at a southwest Missouri university was assessed. One hundred and fifty-six students were recruited from a KIN 210 class as a convenience sample. …
The Acute Effects Of Nicotine And Exercise On Working Memory In Smokers, Matthew Fagan
The Acute Effects Of Nicotine And Exercise On Working Memory In Smokers, Matthew Fagan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Background: In a non-smoking population exercise and nicotine have been shown to increase cognition (Guirguis, 2016). In non-deprived smoking model it is unknown if the exercise will provide the same benefit seen in non-smokers.
Methods: A randomized counterbalanced crossover study design was utilized. The primary outcome was working memory accuracy and reaction time measured by n-back assessments (i.e., 3-back).
Results: A repeated measure ANOVA revealed a significant treatment effect for accuracy on the 3-back [F (24) = 8.118, p=.002, n2=.404]. Post-hoc paired sample t-tests uncovered a significant improvement in accuracy from baseline and the …
Associations Of Smoking Status And Serious Psychological Distress With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Ke-Sheng Wang, Liang Wang, Shimin Zheng, Long-Yang Wu
Associations Of Smoking Status And Serious Psychological Distress With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Ke-Sheng Wang, Liang Wang, Shimin Zheng, Long-Yang Wu

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been a major public health problem due to its high prevalence, morbidity, and mortality. Smoking is a major risk factor for COPD, while serious psychological distress (SPD) is prevalent among COPD patients. However, no study focusing on the effect of SPD on COPD has been so far conducted, while few studies have focused on the associations of SPD and behavioral factors with COPD by smoking status. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the associations of SPD and behavioral factors (such as smoking and physical activity) with COPD. Materials and Methods: Weighted logistic regression …
Acute Effects Of Non-Nicotine Vaping On Vo2max, Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, And Lung Volume, Timothy C. De Jong, Timothy Parrott, Michael Retzlaff
Acute Effects Of Non-Nicotine Vaping On Vo2max, Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, And Lung Volume, Timothy C. De Jong, Timothy Parrott, Michael Retzlaff
Exercise Science Senior Research Projects
Finding a healthy alternative to tobacco smoking has been a topic of interest to health physicians and smokers for many years. Vaping is an increasingly popular smoking alternative that claims to be the healthier alternative that people have been looking for. However, little research has been done on the topic of non-nicotine vaping. This study examines the acute effects of non-nicotine vaping on predicted VO2 max, blood pressure, heart rate, and lung volume. The study will be conducted through a series of 5 days which includes a paperwork day. Willing participants will run the Cooper’s Mile and a ½ Test, …

The Effect Of Exercise On Cravings And Ad Libitum Smoking Following Concurrent Stressors, Angela J. Fong
The Effect Of Exercise On Cravings And Ad Libitum Smoking Following Concurrent Stressors, Angela J. Fong
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Quitting smoking itself is a stressor; it is likely that other stressors occur concurrently and deplete self-regulatory resources. Failure to cope leads to smoking relapse. Exercise has been shown to attenuate cravings and withdrawal symptoms in previous research and has yet to be examined following concurrent stressors. This study examined the effect of an acute bout of moderate intensity exercise on psychological withdrawal symptoms (PWS), cravings and ad lib smoking after concurrent stressors (i.e., temporary abstinence and depletion). Twenty-five smokers were randomized into exercise or passive conditions. Results showed PWS were significantly exacerbated after temporary abstinence and again after depletion …
The Effect Of An Acute Bout Of Exercise On Smoking Topography, Terri L. Schneider
The Effect Of An Acute Bout Of Exercise On Smoking Topography, Terri L. Schneider
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This pilot study aimed to examine the effect of an acute bout of exercise on smoking behavior (topography) subsequent to a temporary period of smoking abstinence. Forty-three adult smokers (female = 34, Mage = 43.14), who had been smoking for an average of 23.90 years, were randomized to either an exercise (n = 21) or passive sitting group. Thirty-one smokers completed the study. The primary outcome variables included: puff count, puff volume, puff duration, inter-puff interval (IPI), and total cigarette duration. The effect of exercise on smoking topography was non-significant. Overall, the effectiveness of exercise as an additional …
