Moments The Adventure Of Life, Adrienne Fletcher

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The purpose of the adventure is to educate the public on how decision may impact different health issues. For example, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a chronic lung disease in which the lungs cannot intake as much oxygen and cause obstructed airflow. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, cough, mucus build up and wheezing. Some risk factors are tobacco smoking, secondhand smoking or living in a polluted area.

We Have A Bone To Pick, Madalyn Foster Nov 2020

We Have A Bone To Pick, Madalyn Foster

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Join the adventure of life to find out if you know what contributes to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is diagnosed in 5.1% of men over 65 and in 24.5% of women over 65. Osteoporosis occurs when there has been an excess amount of bone loss or when the body does not make enough bone. Due to this, the bones become brittle and break easily. Factors that increase risk of diagnosis are sex, older age, family history, and diet. Furthermore, lifestyles that can affect the probability of the disease include a sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption, and tobacco use. The most commonly affected …

Leadership-As-Disciplinary Stewardship: A Social Movement For Kinesiology’S Future Success In The 21st Century University, Jenna R. Lorusso Oct 2020

Leadership-As-Disciplinary Stewardship: A Social Movement For Kinesiology’S Future Success In The 21st Century University, Jenna R. Lorusso

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Some scholars in kinesiology have advocated for the adoption of the leadership-as-disciplinary stewardship (LDS) construct as a way for the discipline to survive and thrive in the challenging 21st Century university climate. Despite budding interest in LDS, there is a lack of empirical research on the construct and the limited conceptual literature lacks the specificity, practicality, and transformative quality necessary for realistic and fruitful application. This participatory research, informed by the social movement theory of collective action frames, investigated the meaning, need, development, and motivation of LDS in kinesiology by engaging 10 senior scholars from various countries and sub-disciplinary …

Neuromotor Control Of The Hand During Smartphone Manipulation, Prasanna Kumar Acharya Jul 2020

Neuromotor Control Of The Hand During Smartphone Manipulation, Prasanna Kumar Acharya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary focus of this dissertation was to understand the motor control strategy used by our neuromuscular system for the multi-layered motor tasks involved during smartphone manipulation. To understand this control strategy, we recorded the kinematics and multi-muscle activation pattern of the right limb during smartphone manipulation, including grasping with/out tapping, movement conditions (MCOND), and arm heights.

In the first study (chapter 2), we examined the neuromuscular control strategy of the upper limb during grasping with/out tapping executed with a smartphone by evaluating muscle-activation patterns of the upper limb during different movement conditions (MCOND). There was a change in muscle …

Self-Talk: Mentoring And Empowering Faculty To Contribute To Organizational Change, Brian Culp Mar 2020

Self-Talk: Mentoring And Empowering Faculty To Contribute To Organizational Change, Brian Culp

Faculty and Research Publications

We can effectively mentor if in possession of qualities to empower mentees, which include: effective communication skills, knowledge of the professional realm, enthusiasm, passion and the ability to create an equitable and supportive organizational environment with the mentee. The authors of this article propose that self-talk (ST) or inner speech is a helpful means of inspiring mentors, colleagues, teachers, and friends in navigating communication challenges with themselves and others. A three-step approach to implementing ST for the purpose of mentoring involves: (1) awareness of the ST they are currently using; (2) follow-up with the mentee’s active reflection of and recording …

Heart Rate And Rating Of Perceived Exertion During High-Intensity Interval Training: Implications For Prescribing Intensity, Emily R. Dunston, Alan Coelho, Katie Taylor Jan 2020

Heart Rate And Rating Of Perceived Exertion During High-Intensity Interval Training: Implications For Prescribing Intensity, Emily R. Dunston, Alan Coelho, Katie Taylor

2020 Symposium Posters

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a popular and effective time-efficient alternative to moderate-intensity continuous training for improving cardiorespiratory fitness. However, there is limited research investigating the most effective and practical way to prescribe training intensities for HIIT. PURPOSE: To determine heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) responses across a bout of HIIT. Additionally, the relationship between HR and RPE was examined. METHODS: Young adults (n=16; age 21.8±1.4 years; 10 females) visited the lab on two separate occasions. At the first visit, participants completed an incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer to determine peak power output (PPO). …

Comparing Knee Joint Mechanics Across Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle, Bethany Kilpatrick Jan 2020

Comparing Knee Joint Mechanics Across Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle, Bethany Kilpatrick

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most commonly occurring knee injury. Compared to men in the same sports, females are two to eight times at higher risk for ACL injury. Research suggests that hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle (MC) play a crucial role in ACL injuries due to their effect on tendons and ligament's mechanical properties. PURPOSE: To examine knee joint laxity during dynamic movements across three-time points of the MC. METHODS: Seven young, healthy females with regular MCs performed three jump-landing tasks (double leg depth jump, single-leg lateral jump, and single-leg forward jump) across the early-follicular, …
