International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 355-365, 2019. This study examined the effects of Assault™ pre-workout supplementation on peak power output (PP), mean power output (MP), and percent decline in power output (% decline) during repeated, Wingate anaerobic tests. Thirteen healthy, physically active participants (7 male, 6 female) completed the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design with two conditions, supplement and placebo. The participants visited the laboratory for a total of three visits, 2-7 days apart. During visit 1, the participants completed a 4-minute familiarization warm-up on the Monark cycle ergometer and performed one baseline, 30-second Wingate cycle ergometry test. During …

Acute Effects Of 24-H Sleep Deprivation On Salivary Cortisol And Testosterone Concentrations And Testosterone To Cortisol Ratio Following Supplementation With Caffeine Or Placebo, Ciaran K. Mc Donald, Joss Moore, Alan Mc Intyre, Kevin Carmody, Bernard Donne Jan 2017

Acute Effects Of 24-H Sleep Deprivation On Salivary Cortisol And Testosterone Concentrations And Testosterone To Cortisol Ratio Following Supplementation With Caffeine Or Placebo, Ciaran K. Mc Donald, Joss Moore, Alan Mc Intyre, Kevin Carmody, Bernard Donne

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(1): 108-120, 2017. Caffeine has become a popular ergogenic aid amongst athletes and usage to improve athletic performance has been well documented. The effect of caffeine on anabolic and catabolic hormones in a sleep-deprived state has had little investigation to date. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the potential of caffeine to offset the effects, if any, of short-term sleep deprivation and exercise on an athlete’s testosterone and cortisol concentrations via salivary technique. Eleven competitive male athletes volunteered to be part of this prospective double-blinded study. Three test days were scheduled for …

Effects Of A Caffeine-Containing Transdermal Energy Patch On Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise Performance, Kenneth R. Dragoo, W. Matthew Silvers, Kelly E. Johnson, Eliseo A. Gonzalez

International Journal of Exercise Science

The use of caffeine-containing (74-mg) energy patches (EnP) offers a novel mode of caffeine delivery that may alleviate stomach discomfort associated with oral caffeine use. The purpose of this study was to use four separate tests to evaluate the effects of EnP use on aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance. Three separate moderately active college-aged sample populations performed either 1) cycle time-to-exhaustion, 2) Wingate (WIN), or 3) repeated sprints and one repetition maximum bench press using EnP and placebo patches (PlP). No statistical differences were found between EnP and PlP for all dependent variables (p > 0.05) except for WIN peak power, …

International Journal of Exercise Science

Energy drinks are widely available and popular among athletes and non-athletes. However, the effects of energy drinks on resting and exercise energy expenditure and metabolism remain largely unknown. On four separate occasions, baseline measurements of resting metabolic rate (RMR) and Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER) were obtained in ten healthy males (21.4 ± 1.6 y, 77.60± 7.5 kg, 180.0 ± 7.1 cm). Then, in a randomly assigned cross-over design, the subjects consumed 473 ml of one of three commercially available energy drinks or a placebo and then RMR and RER were measured 1 hour later. The subjects then engaged in 15 …
