International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(8): 1165-1173, 2017. The aim of the study was to determine the acute systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and heart rate (HR) responses following two intense training sessions (24 hours apart). Nine male extreme conditioning program (ECP) practitioners with more than 6 months of experience (age 26.7 ± 6.6 years; body mass 78.8 ± 13.2 kg; body fat 13.5 ± 6.2 %) completed two experimental ECP sessions. Cardiovascular variables were measured before, immediately after and every 15 min during a 45 min recovery following each experimental session. Compared …

Effects Of The Boy Scouts Of America Personal Fitness Merit Badge On Cardio-Metabolic Risk, Health Related Fitness And Physical Activity In Adolescents Boys, Justin Maxwell, Ryan D. Burns, Timothy A. Brusseau Oct 2017

Effects Of The Boy Scouts Of America Personal Fitness Merit Badge On Cardio-Metabolic Risk, Health Related Fitness And Physical Activity In Adolescents Boys, Justin Maxwell, Ryan D. Burns, Timothy A. Brusseau

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 964-976, 2017. A growing number of adolescents are more sedentary and have fewer formal opportunities to participate in physical activity. With the mounting evidence that sedentary time has a negative impact on cardio-metabolic profiles, health related fitness and physical activity, there is a pressing need to find an affordable adolescent physical activity intervention. One possible intervention that has been overlooked in the past is Boy Scouts of America. There are nearly 900,000 adolescent boys who participate in Boy Scouts in the United States. The purpose of this research study was to evaluate the effect …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(5): 798-806, 2017. Efforts to combat cardiovascular disease (CVD) have proven effective, especially in the population aged 55-74 years. However, less research has been conducted in younger populations to determine at what age CVD risk develops. The purpose of this study is to compare cardiovascular health markers in adults, specifically CVD risk between younger adults aged 18-22 and a slightly older group of adults in middle adulthood aged 23-54. Cardiovascular health measures were collected from a group of adults; 13 younger adults (20.2±0.9 yrs) and 10 adults in middle adulthood (42.9±10.1 yrs). All participants were …

Hypotensive Responses Of Reciprocal Supersets Versus Traditional Resistance Training In Apparently Healthy Men, Claudio Melibeu Bentes, Pablo B. Hypotensive Responses Of Reciprocal Supersets Versus Traditional Resistance Training In Apparently Healthy Men, Claudio Melibeu Bentes, Pablo B. Costa Corresponding Author, Victor Gonçalves Corrêa Neto, Roberto Simão, Gabriel Andrade Paz, Marianna Maia, Tiago Figueiredo, Gabriel Rodrigues Neto, Jefferson S. Novaes, Humberto Miranda

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(3): 434-445, 2017. The purpose of this study was to compare the hypotensive responses of reciprocal supersets (SS) versus traditional training (TRAD) methods. Thirteen men with at least five years of recreational experience in resistance training (RT) volunteered for the study. When completing the TRAD protocol, participants performed the following exercises separately in sequence: chest press (CP), low row (LR), leg extension (LE), leg curl (LC), pull down (PD), and shoulder press (SP). The SS method required participants to complete the same exercises as in the TRAD protocol, but exercises were coupled such that muscles …

An Acute Bout Of A Controlled Breathing Frequency Lowers Sympathetic Neural Outflow But Not Blood Pressure In Healthy Normotensive Subjects, Shannon Mcclain, Alexa Brooks, Sara Jarvis Mar 2017

An Acute Bout Of A Controlled Breathing Frequency Lowers Sympathetic Neural Outflow But Not Blood Pressure In Healthy Normotensive Subjects, Shannon Mcclain, Alexa Brooks, Sara Jarvis

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(2): 188-196, 2017 Controlled or paced breathing is often used as a stress reduction technique but the impact on blood pressure (BP) and sympathetic outflow have not been consistently reported. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a controlled breathing (12 breaths/min, CB) rate would be similar to an individual’s spontaneous breathing (SB) rate. Secondly, would a CB rate of 12 breaths/min alter heart rate (HR), BP, and indices of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Twenty-one subjects (10 women, 11 men) performed two trials: SB, where the subject chose a comfortable breathing rate; …

The Effects Of Beetroot Juice On Vo2max And Blood Pressure During Submaximal Exercise, Jose M. Perez Jan 2017

The Effects Of Beetroot Juice On Vo2max And Blood Pressure During Submaximal Exercise, Jose M. Perez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Supplementation with beetroot juice (BR) has been shown to reduce blood pressure (BP) at rest and improve several performance parameters during submaximal and maximal exercise. BR effects on BP during submaximal exercise have not been investigated. Furthermore, the effects of BR on VO2max are inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of BR on VO2max and BP during submaximal exercise. 20 healthy, recreationally trained volunteers (age 21.8±2.35 years, weight 75.10±10.62 kg, height 177.4±6.39 cm) participated in this study, which had a double-blind placebo controlled randomized crossover design. Participants began supplementation with either …
