Some Adult Digenetic Trematodes In Striped Mullet From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Robin M. Overstreet Oct 1971

Some Adult Digenetic Trematodes In Striped Mullet From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Morphological information is given on the adults of four trematodes from Mugil cephalus from estuarine waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico with complementary information from specimens from Georgia. Lasiotocus glebulentus sp. n., from the Gulf, possesses a submedian genital pore and apparently differs from all known species by containing several large concretions in the excretory vesicle. Data are presented for Hymenocotta manteri Overstreet, 1969, Saccocoelioides beauforti (Hunter and Thomas, 1961) comb. n., and Dicrogaster fastigatus Thatcher and Sparks, 1958. These three species are now known from both the Gulf of Mexico and the western Atlantic coast. Carassotrema mugilicola Shireman, …

Insect Flagellates From Feces And Gut Contents Of Four Genera Of Lizards, Norman R. Dollahon, John J. Janovy Jr. Oct 1971

Insect Flagellates From Feces And Gut Contents Of Four Genera Of Lizards, Norman R. Dollahon, John J. Janovy Jr.

John Janovy Publications

During investigations of experimental leishmaniasis in American lizards, insect flagellates of at least two genera were isolated from freshly deposited fecal material and gut contents of two genera of Central American lizards (Basilicus and Ameiva).

It appears to us that some of the conclusions regarding the biology of certain flagellates described as reptilian leishmanias must be accepted with caution. Insect flagellates do persist in the lizard intestine for several days, and it is entirely possibly that some reptilian "leishmanias," particularly those described with gut involvement, such as Leishmania henrici, may actually be insect flagellates.

Post-Mortem Examination Of Cattle And Sheep For Parasitic Helminths, Phil Duke Wright Aug 1971

Post-Mortem Examination Of Cattle And Sheep For Parasitic Helminths, Phil Duke Wright

Theses and Dissertations

A survey of helminth parasites of sheep and cattle was conducted to determine the incidence and distribution of these parasites that could be detected by post-mortem examination. Animals were obtained from local abattoirs within the valley, and the viscera were examined for the presence of helminth parasites. Parasites identifies from sheep in order of highest incidence were: Haemonchus contorus, Ostertagia cicumcinta, Chabertia ovina, Nematodirus spathiger, Trichostongylus colubriformis, Thysanosoma actinioides, Trichuris ovis, N. filicollis, Echinococcus granulosus, Strongyloides papillosus, O. ostertagi, Cooperia oncophora, Cysticercus tenuicollis, Fasciola hepatica, Oesophagostomum venulosum, Moniezia expansa, and M. benedieni. Those recovered from cattle in order of highest …

This paper reports the results of a comparative study of the development of the larval Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863), and associated tissue reaction in naturally and experimentally infected mammals representing 31 species. The histogenesis of the larval cestode was traced in detail in arvicoline rodents of several species, and interspecific differences were defined.

In arvicoline rodents, the developing larva exhibited host-specific characteristics within about a month after infection was established. The tissue reaction in Microtus oeconomus was characterized by the production of a large quantity of detritus around the larva, and by the formation of a thick epithelioid zone. In …

Glaucivermis Spinosus Gen. Et Sp. N. (Digenea: Zoogonidae) From The Southern Kingfish, Menticirrhus Americanus (Linnaeus), In The Coastal Waters Of Mississippi, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Glaucivermis spinosus is described from the intestine and pyloric ceca of Menticirrhus americanus collected near Ocean Springs, Mississippi, in the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent waters. The genus is characterized primarily by having a preacetabular intestinal bifurcation, a preacetabular sinistral genital pore, a bilobed vitellarium, a swelling of Laurer's canal to form the seminal receptacle, and tandem to diagonal testes. It is most similar to the genus Diphtherostomum from which it differs primarily in the arrangement of the testes.

The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson May 1971

The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.

Twenty-two diabetic and twenty-four control female mice were used. Blood glucose determinations and total white counts were made on each …

The Somatic Chromosomes Of Some North American Marmots (Sciuridae), With Remarks On The Relationships Of Marmota Browerii Hall And Gilmore, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch Mar 1971

The Somatic Chromosomes Of Some North American Marmots (Sciuridae), With Remarks On The Relationships Of Marmota Browerii Hall And Gilmore, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Karyotypes are defined for two nearctic species of marmots, Marmota olympus (2n = 40) and M. vancouverensis (2n = 42), and supplemental information is included on the karyotypes of M. flaviventris, M. monax ochracea, and M. marmota. The six North American species of Marmota (NF = 66) comprise a distinct group as compared with the middle Asian species (NF = 70) for which the karyotypes are known. Karyologic findings and zoogeographic evidence based upon the distribution of two nearctic species of host-specific cestodes indicate that M. broweri, in northern Alaska, is a pre-Würm relict. Its affinities …

How To Control Flystrike In Sheep, H E. Fels Jan 1971

How To Control Flystrike In Sheep, H E. Fels

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FLYSTRIKE affects incomes and efficiency because a large part of the work done on sheep farms is to prevent or treat it, and because it kills sheep and reduces the amount and quality of production.

Flystrike Control Programmes, H E. Fels Jan 1971

Flystrike Control Programmes, H E. Fels

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE various flystrike control methods all avoid susceptible patches of skin on the sheep.

To avoid work—

• choose methods that give the most control for the least effort, and

• combine these methods into a system that works well.

Observations On Parasite-Host Relationships Of Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In North Dakota, Robert L. Rausch, S. H. Richards Jan 1971

Observations On Parasite-Host Relationships Of Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In North Dakota, Robert L. Rausch, S. H. Richards

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Red foxes, Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus), and small mammals were collected and examined during 1965-1969, to investigate parasite-host relationships of Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, in North Dakota. Comparative studies of this cestode were carried on concurrently through experimental infection of carnivores and rodents. In winter, red foxes in North Dakota exhibited high rates of infection of comparatively low intensity. Deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner), and voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus (Ord), were important intermediate hosts, but the larvae in deer mice produced fewer protoscolices. The strains of E. multilocularis from North Dakota and from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, differ biologically, as indicated by …
