Various museums in recent years have published lists of type specimens housed in their collections. Such lists provide a useful point of reference for systematists and, for that reason, have been encouraged by the International Council of Museums. In 1968, that organization issued "A preliminary list of catalogues of type specimens in zoology and palaeontology," compiled by A. W. F. Banfield, and a revised list is planned for 1971. This catalogue of holotypes of mammals in the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History is particularly appropriate for the present volume, because Professor E.
