Current methods for conducting expression Quantitative Trait Loci (eQTL) analysis are limited in scope to a pairwise association testing between a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and expression probe set in a region around a gene of interest, thus ignoring the inherent between-SNP correlation. To determine association, p-values are then typically adjusted using Plug-in False Discovery Rate. As many SNPs are interrogated in the region and multiple probe-sets taken, the current approach requires the fitting of a large number of models. We propose to remedy this by introducing a flexible function-on-scalar regression that models the genome as a functional outcome. The …

Importance Of Genetic Diversity Assessment In Crop Plants And Its Recent Advances: An Overview Of Its Analytical Perspectives, Mahalingam Govindaraj

Mahalingam Govindaraj

The importance of plant genetic diversity (PGD) is now being recognized as a specific area since exploding population with urbanization and decreasing cultivable lands are the critical factors contributing to food insecurity in developing world.Agricultural scientists realized that PGD can be captured and stored in the formof plant genetic resources (PGR) such as gene bank,DNA library, and so forth, in the biorepository which preserve genetic material for long period. However, conserved PGR must be utilized for crop improvement in order to meet future global challenges in relation to food and nutritional security. This paper comprehensively reviews four important areas; (i) the …

Iniadi Pearl Millet Germplasm As A Valuable Genetic Resource For High Grain Iron, Mahalingam Govindaraj

Mahalingam Govindaraj

Crop biofortification is increasingly being recognized as a cost-effective and sustainable approach to address the widespread micronutrient malnutrition arising from Fe and Zn deficiencies. Pearl millet as a cereal crop species has higher Fe density than all other major cereals. Earlier studies in pearl millet have shown that breeding lines, hybrid parents, improved populations and composites having high Fe and Zn densities were often based largely or entirely on iniadi pearl millet germplasm. In an attempt to identify additional sources of high Fe density in this group of germplasm, 297 accessions were screened using Perl’s Prussian Blue staining, of which …

In the present study, we cloned and sequenced the mRNAs of the Sod3 [extracellular Cu Zn SOD (superoxide dismutase)] gene in Drosophila and identified two mRNA products formed by alternative splicing. These products code for a long and short protein derived from the four transcripts found in global expression studies (Flybase numbers Dmel\CG9027, FBgn0033631). Both mRNA process variants contain an extracellular signalling sequence, a region of high homology to the Sod1 (cytoplasmic Cu Zn SOD) including a conserved AUG start, with the longer form also containing a hydrophobic tail. The two fully processed transcripts are homologous to Caenorhabditis elegans Sod3 …

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi- Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) conducts inter-disciplinary and partnership-based research for the genetic improvement of its mandate crops. During the 1970s and 1980s, the pearl millet improvement at ICRISAT, Patancheru, emphasized on: (i) developing a diverse range of traitspecific composites, based on the germplasm largely from the Western and Central Africa; (ii) improving them by the process of recurrent selection, principally for grain yield and downy mildew (Sclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schroet ) resistance; and (iii) developing open-pollinated varieties (OPVs)

The Empire Of Cancer: Gene Patents And Cancer Voices, Matthew Rimmer Dec 2013

The Empire Of Cancer: Gene Patents And Cancer Voices, Matthew Rimmer

Matthew Rimmer

In his book, The Emperor of All Maladies, Siddhartha Mukherjee writes a history of cancer — ‘It is a chronicle of an ancient disease — once a clandestine, “whispered-about” illness — that has metamorphosed into a lethal shape-shifting entity imbued with such penetrating metaphorical, medical, scientific, and political potency that cancer is often described as the defining plague of our generation’.Increasingly, an important theme in the history of cancer is the role of law, particularly in the field of intellectual property law. It is striking that a number of contemporary policy debates over intellectual property and public health have concerned …

Paraoxonase activity was lower in Indians compared to the …

The Use Of Imputed Values In The Meta-Analysis Of Genome-Wide Association Studies., Shuo Jiao, Li Hsu, Carolyn Hutter, Ulrike Peters Jul 2011

The Use Of Imputed Values In The Meta-Analysis Of Genome-Wide Association Studies., Shuo Jiao, Li Hsu, Carolyn Hutter, Ulrike Peters

Shuo Jiao

In genome-wide association studies (GWAS), it is a common practice to impute the genotypes of untyped single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) by exploiting the linkage disequilibrium structure among SNPs. The use of imputed genotypes improves genome coverage and makes it possible to perform meta-analysis combining results from studies genotyped on different platforms. A popular way of using imputed data is the "expectation-substitution" method, which treats the imputed dosage as if it were the true genotype. In current practice, the estimates given by the expectation-substitution method are usually combined using inverse variance weighting (IVM) scheme in meta-analysis. However, the IVM is not …

The temporal and spatial patterns of adult stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), emergence from six sites where large round baled hay had been provided to pasture cattle as winter feed were studied using emergence traps. The substrate at these sites, consisting of waste hay mixed with bovine manure and urine, provided an excellent developmental habitat for immature stable flies. Stable flies were the most frequently collected fly emerging from these sites with a yearly average of 1,581 emerging per square meter. Stable fly emergence from these sites began in early May (235 annual accumulated Day-Degree 10° C [DD10]), peaked in …

Paraoxonase 1 Activity As A Predictor Of Cardiovascular Disease In Type 2 Diabetes, Rozaida @ Poh Yuen Ying Jan 2010

Paraoxonase 1 Activity As A Predictor Of Cardiovascular Disease In Type 2 Diabetes, Rozaida @ Poh Yuen Ying

Rozaida @ Poh Yuen Ying

The role of paraoxonase 1 in cardiovascular disease complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus is not fully understood. We studied paraoxonase activity towards paraoxon in 188 non-diabetic and 140 diabetic subjects using general linear models and univariate analysis. Adjusting for age revealed a reduction in activity towards paraoxon was associated with a significant increase in risk (p=0.023) for cardiovascular disease complications in diabetic patients. Multivariate analysis of two plasma measures of paraoxonase activity using paraoxon and diazoxon also showed reduced paraoxonase activity towards paraoxon was associated with a significant increase in risk (p=0.045) for cardiovascular disease complications in diabetic patients. …

Effect Of Superconsciousness External Energy On The Atomic, Crystalline And Powder Characterisitics Of “Carbon Allotrope Powders”, Mahendra Kumar Trivedi

Mahendra Kumar Trivedi

Scientists are searching for eluding link between spirituality and science. Some believe fundamental essences of universe to be energy and information. As per current understanding energy and matter always co- existed and is considered one and the same. Energy is consideredas ‘matter-inperpetual-motion’and matter as ‘stationary-energy’.Inter conversion between matter and energy has been defined by Einstein’s famous energy-mass equation (E=mc2) which has been provedby nuclear physicists using complex nuclear reactions involving high energy particles. However, many spiritual masters have claimed to realize this energy-matter inter conversion using their spiritual powers/energy but scientifically unknown and unverified. It is the first time that …

A New Method For Collecting Clean Stable Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Pupae Of Known Age., Dennis R. Berkebile, Anthony P. Weinhold, David B. Taylor

David B Taylor

Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans L., are important pests of confined and pasture cattle. They have been reared in the laboratory to study their biology and to test new methods of control. Research on rearing modifications has concentrated on developing larval diets from materials locally abundant. Under current protocols, pupae form in the medium. Aggregations of pupae were located and removed, often with a considerable amount of extraneous material. Various methods have been developed to separate the pupae from waste material. We describe a method by which wandering larvae are enticed to leave the medium prior to pupariation. The larvae were …

Using The Estimated Penetrances To Determine The Range Of The Underlying Genetic Model In Case-Control Design, Mark J. Meyer, Neal Jeffries, Gang Zheng Jan 2008

Using The Estimated Penetrances To Determine The Range Of The Underlying Genetic Model In Case-Control Design, Mark J. Meyer, Neal Jeffries, Gang Zheng

Mark J Meyer

It is well known that the penetrance cannot be estimated using the retrospective case- control samples without making additional assumptions. In the literature the estimation of the penetrance is based on the assumptions that either the disease is rare or the disease prevalence is known. We propose an alternative approach to estimate the penetrance by assuming an underlying genetic model even though it is unknown. With this assumption, we can obtain the point estimates of the penetrances as functions of the genetic model, from which the range of underlying genetic models can be determined. We examine the performance of our …
