Differences In Plant Hormone Responses Between Arabidopsis Thaliana And Schrenkiella Parvula Facing Lithium Toxicities, Jifeng Li
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Investigating stress responses in plants is central to plant development studies and crop research. Identifying mechanisms of plant abiotic stress tolerance and adaptation will be keys to relieve the conflict between an increasing global population and declining agronomic land. Studies on extremophytes and their genetic responses to environmental stress are a way to help understand how and why these extremophile plants can develop well under extreme environments including high salinity and heavy metal toxicity. The studies herein first focus on comparative responses at the genetic level to lithium toxicity between Arabidopsis thaliana and Schrenkiella parvula. Based on elemental quantification …

Development Of Functional Markers For Resistance To Smut And Identification Of Genes Differentially Expressed In Response To Brown Rust In Sugarcane, Jose David Cortes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Smut, caused by Sporisorium scitamineum and brown rust, caused by Puccinia melanocephala, are two of the most important diseases that affect sugarcane production in Louisiana and worldwide. Smut continues to cause losses in the breeding program in Louisiana. Therefore, a QTL analysis was conducted to identify molecular markers associated with resistance in F1 progeny (162) of a biparental cross between susceptible cultivar L 99-233 and resistant HoCP 96-540. Using 1,574 single-dose SNP markers, a total of 253 linkage groups (LG) were obtained with a genome coverage of 24,580.15 cM. Six QTLs were localized on five LGs. The highest …

Disentangling Glial Diversity In Peripheral Nerves At Single Nuclei Resolution, Aldrin Kay Yuen Yim
Disentangling Glial Diversity In Peripheral Nerves At Single Nuclei Resolution, Aldrin Kay Yuen Yim
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ability to discern gene expression at single cell level is revolutionizing our understanding of both basic biology and human health. Peripheral nerves are essential communicators between the outside world and the CNS, as evidenced by the devastating effects of diseases that disrupt them, such as ALS, Charcot-Marie-Tooth Syndrome and diabetic neuropathy. Understanding peripheral nerve dysfunction at a mechanistic level is of considerable interest due to the increasing prevalence and associated patient care costs of these disorders. Although most research of the peripheral nerve has focused on glial-axonal interactions, the important contributions of other cell types besides Schwann cells, such …
Identifying Genes Downstream Of Mef2 That Influence Ethanol Sedation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ananya Talikoti
Identifying Genes Downstream Of Mef2 That Influence Ethanol Sedation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ananya Talikoti
Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol use disorder is a global public health issue that affects millions across the world. It can result in negative physical and mental health outcomes, and currently treatment options are limited and rates of relapse are high. Identifying genes that affect aspects of ethanol behaviors in model organisms, such as Drosophila melanogaster, can serve to eventually develop more robust therapeutic interventions for those experiencing alcohol dependence. Previous studies have identified a relationship between a person's initial sensitivity to alcohol and their abuse potential for the drug in later life. Therefore, we can study sedation behaviors in Drosophila melanogaster to …

Salvia hispanica (commonly known as chia) is gaining popularity worldwide as a healthy food supplement due to its low saturated fatty acid and high polyunsaturated fatty acid content, in addition to being rich in protein, fiber, and antioxidants. Chia leaves contain plethora of secondary metabolites with medicinal properties. In this study, we sequenced chia leaf and root transcriptomes using the Illumina platform. The short reads were assembled into contigs using the Trinity software and annotated against the Uniprot database. The reads were de novo assembled into 103,367 contigs, which represented 92.8% transcriptome completeness and a diverse set of Gene Ontology …

Background: It is unclear whether improving feed efficiency by selection for low residual feed intake (RFI) compromises pigs’ immunocompetence. Here, we aimed at investigating whether pig lines divergently selected for RFI had different inflammatory responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure, regarding to clinical presentations and transcriptomic changes in peripheral blood cells.
Results: LPS injection induced acute systemic inflammation in both the low-RFI and high-RFI line (n = 8 per line). At 4 h post injection (hpi), the low-RFI line had a significantly lower (p= 0.0075) mean rectal temperature compared to the high-RFI line. However, no significant differences in complete blood count …
Dissection Of Floral Organ Development And Sterility In Sorghum Bicolor, Ashley R. Smith
Dissection Of Floral Organ Development And Sterility In Sorghum Bicolor, Ashley R. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Sorghum bicolor is a drought resistant cereal grain commonly grown for use in food, feed, fiber, and fuel production. Due to its versatility and modest sized genome it is poised to become an increasingly important research organism within the C4 plants. Sorghum produces spikelet pairs with one fertile sessile spikelet and one to two sterile pedicellate spikelets. One major area of interest in sorghum production is maximizing seed yield. While the importance of the grain is obvious there are several large gaps in the study of sorghum that prevent researchers and growers from maximum productivity. The first gap is that …
The Determinants Of Nucleosome Patterns And The Impact Of Phosphate Starvation On Nucleosome Patterns And Gene Expression In Rice, Qi Zhang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In eukaryotic cells, DNA is a large molecule that must be greatly condensed to fit within the nucleus. DNA is wrapped around histone proteins to form nucleosomes, which facilitate DNA condensation, but on the other hand, may limit DNA processes. Organisms must respond to environmental stress in order to survive, and one strategy is by remodeling nucleosomes to promote changes in DNA accessibility to alter gene expression. Studies have demonstrated a clear correlation between nucleosome dynamics and transcriptional change in some eukaryotes, however factors that affect nucleosome positioning in plants are largely unknown, and the correlation between nucleosome dynamics and …

Switchgrass flag leaves can be expected to be a source of carbon to the plant, and its senescence is likely to impact the remobilization of nutrients from the shoots to the rhizomes. However, many genes have not been assigned a function in specific stages of leaf development. Here, we characterized gene expression in flag leaves over their development. By merging changes in leaf chlorophyll and the expression of genes for chlorophyll biosynthesis and degradation, a four-phase molecular roadmap for switchgrass flag leaf ontogeny was developed. Genes associated with early leaf development were up-regulated in phase 1. Phase 2 leaves had …
