The Effects Of Seed Size And Maternal Origin On The Distribution Of Individual Plant Size In Ludwigia Leptocarpa (Onagraceae), Rebecca W. Dolan

Seed size is normally distributed for many annual species, while mature plant size is frequently positively skewed. A study was conducted to determine the influence of seed size and the role of genetic differences in determining relative seedling size for Ludwigia leptocarpa. Seed size had a significant effect on percentage germination and time of seed germination but no effect on dry weight or leaf area of seedlings. Seed size and spacing had a significant effect on seedling dry weight for plants grown under competition, while relative day of emergence had no effect. Nine of 260 species of the Eurasian genus Verba scum have been reported from North America; only two (y. thapsus and y. blattaria) are common. Verba scum densiflorum is well established in the U.S. only in southeast Wisconsin in the area immediately surrounding the Field Station where it is an aggressive weed. It differs morphologically, phenologically and ecologically from either y. thapsus or y. phlomoides, the two more common species which it superficially resembles.

Seasonal Changes And Overwintering Of Endoparasites In The Bat (Myotis Lucifugus) In A Southeastern Wisconsin Hibernaculum, James R. Coggins

Eight digenetic trematode species (Phylum Platyhelminthes, Subclass Digena), one cestode species (Phylum Platyhelminthes, Class Cestoidea) and three nematode species (Phylum Nematoda) were recovered from the little brown bat, Myotis lucifugus, at the Neda Mine hibernaculum in southeastern Wisconsin. Bats displayed a rich and diverse helminth fauna throughout the year. Statistically significant seasonal variation was observed for two digenetic trematodes. Mean intensities and prevalence of parasites were highest in autumn and spring and lowest in summer. Highest species diversity occurred in autumn. Greater intensity and prevalence in autumn and spring were correlated with bat swarming and emergence patterns, behavioral phenomena which …

Since its reorganization in 1981, one goal of the Wisconsin Mycological Society has been a comprehensive long-term survey of fleshy and other fungi of southeastern Wisconsin. Over a period of years, random collections are to be made at a series of selected foray sites to document spring through fall floras. The UWM Field Station is one of these foray sites. Habitat and locality are to be recorded for each specimen along with field characteristics. Each identified collection will be dried and filed in the herbarium of the Milwaukee Public Museum. This paper discusses the string bog portion of Cedarburg Bog and the origin of string bogs in general. String bog or "strangmoor" Is found in Cedarburg Bog, which Is about 200 miles south of the southernmost string bog location previously reported. The string bog Is deep within the bog, remote from both the periphery of the bog and the open lakes within It. This vegetational pattern consists of slightly raised ridges and islands with woody vegetation, alternating with flat sedge mat areas. The linear-leaf sundew has been extirpated from several stations at the southern edge of Its range. Cedarburg Bog is believed to harbor the largest of the remaining southern colonies of this species. Drosera linearis has a lower reproductive output at Cedarburg Bog than at other sites, and produces fewer seeds per plant than the three sundew species which share its range. The population studied at Cedarburg Bog declined in population size and reproductive output from 1980 to 1982, and revealed characteristics associated with high rates of local extinction. The Farmington Creek watershed consists of 6,400 acres of forested and brush-covered lands on the west face of the Wasatch Mountains between Salt Lake City and Ogden. Streamflow data have been gathered from this stream as well as from most of its perennial tributaries for many years. Mean daily, monthly, and annual flows are tabulated for all years of record from the 12 gaged tributaries of farmington creek.

Mississippi’S Softwood Timber Potential: Private Nonindustrial Influences, Steven H. Bullard, G. H. Weaver, Willem W. S. Van Hees

Mississippi's long-run softwood timber potential was estimated for three input situations under a common set of economic and biological assumptions. Economic goals for sustained pine production were estimated using the computer program GASPLY with no restrictions, with private nonindustrial upland hardwoods excluded from type conversion and with private nonindustrial lands excluded from active forest management altogether. Estimated price-quantity equilibria ranged from $301 per thousand cubic feet (MCF) and 966 million cubic feet (MMCF) in the unrestricted case, to $1,226/MCF and 479 MMCF in the example with passive private nonindustrial management. An Approach For Projecting Mixed-Species Forest Growth And Mortality, Steven H. Bullard

Mixed-species forests are common throughout the United States and growth and yield models are needed which reflect complex interrelationships. A stand-table projection approach with upgrowth and mortality components is presented for modeling growth and development in such forests. The method involves concepts previously used to model mixed-species diameter growth, in the upgrowth component of the projection system. Tentative equation forms arc presented to help clarify the general approach.

Root Diseases And Blister Rust Associated With Bark Beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) In Western White Pine In Idaho, David Kulhavy, A.D. Partridge, R.W. Stark

Root systems of western white pine, Pinus montieola Douglas, were excavated with explosives and examined for pathogens. Data were also recorded on portions of the crown killed by blister rust caused by Cronartium ribieola Fisch. Statistical tests revealed a significant association between the bark beetles Dendroetonus ponderosae Hopkins and Pityogenes fossifrons (LeConte), and the root pathogen Armillariella mellea. (Vah!. ex Fr.) Karst and between beetles and all root diseases. Ninety-two percent of the trees attacked by bark beetles had root diseases, and 97% had either root diseases or blister rust.
