Okoubaka aubrevillei is an indigenous and sacred tropical tree in Africa. It is rare with allelopathic properties and has relatively little information available in terms of what is responsible for its usage for medicinal and traditional usage. The phytochemical screening and quantitative analysis of the compounds in the barks and leaves of Okoubaka aubrevillei was determined to ascertain and establish its earlier claimed usage as traditional and modern medicine. Expanding wild pig (Sus scrofa) populations across the southern United States has the potential to impact longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) restoration efforts. The depredation of planted pine seedlings is the most widespread and economically costly damage caused by wild pigs in forest plantations. A better understanding of the ecological factors affecting depredation rates will allow managers to implement best management practices to reduce seedling mortality from wild pigs at their most vulnerable stage of growth. Wild plants have always held economic, nutritional and medicinal value for human beings. Present work is the study of local information of some wild plants being used for remedial purposes in District Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. The indigenous knowledge of local conventional uses was collected through survey and personal interviews during field trips. A total of 50 plant species were identified by taxonomic description using field guides and locally by medicinal knowledge of people living in the area. About 150 informers were interviewed randomly to record local names and ethno-medicinal uses of different plant species.

Existing research has demonstrated that forest management practices (e.g., clear-cutting, planting) can dramatically impact animal communities. This is particularly the case with amphibian populations due to their sensitivity to microhabitat alterations. However, few studies have investigated the manner by which forest management practices impact the abiotic variables most relevant to healthy amphibian populations. Wood-inhabiting fungi are responsible for the degradation of dead wood, playing a role in nutrient cycling and nutrient transport making them indispensable to their ecosystem’s health. Fungi are generally understudied, specifically in the tropics despite its proven hotspot in diversity and the importance of conservation. Wood-inhabiting fungi were investigated in the eastern Andean montane cloud forest of Ecuador to determine the biodiversity, distribution, and relation to an altitudinal gradient. Biological parameters of the California red scale (Aonidiella aurantii [Maskell] [Hemiptera: Diaspididae]) were determined under laboratory conditions at 3 different temperatures (20, 23, and 27 °C) on butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata Duchesne ex Lamarck) (Cucurbitaceae), while the biological parameters of its parasitoid Aphytis melinus DeBach (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) were conducted at 27 °C. The survival of A.a aurantii ranged between 80.0% and 88.3%. The highest mortality was recorded during the adult stage, with mortalities ranging between 12% and 20%. In this study the utilization of kermes oak (Quercus coccifera L.) wood, which could be used as an industrial raw material for the production of fiberboard, was investigated. In the experimental design, boards were produced from mixtures of kermes oak and brutian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) fibers in ratios of 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0. The chemical and thermal characteristics of the fibers used were determined, and the effects of these characteristics on the physical and mechanical properties of the produced fiberboards were revealed. This research was carried out over two years to determine the quality changes in fresh-cut apple slices processed after hot water, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), and lovastatin treatments followed by controlled atmosphere (CA) storage. Apples harvested at the optimum stage were immediately transferred to the postharvest laboratory by a refrigerated vehicle. In the current study, significant variations were identified for seven fruit traits of the walnut accessions. The highest correlations were detected between nut height and nut width, and between nut weight and kernel weight. Most traits had a continuous normal binominal distribution. A total of 16,774 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers based on diversity arrays technology were generated and after filtering the missing data, the remaining 13,611 SNP data were used for genotyping. The chemical composition and the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of essential oils from two Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G.Don subspecies grown in Bulgaria were investigated. As a result, 95 compounds with concentrations above 0.05% were detected by GC/MS and 46 of them, mainly mono- and sesquiterpenes, representing 79.81% and 85.51% of the total content of the samples, were identified. The main constituents of the essential oil from Helichrysum italicum subsp. microphyllum (plant origin from Bosnia) were monoterpene α-pinene (20.84%) and sesquiterpene γ-curcumene (16.53%), followed by β-selinene (5.59%), ar-curcumene (4.39%), trans-caryophyllene (4.35%), β-diketone italidione I (4.32%), α-selinene (4.28%), and neryl acetate (3.81%). …

Garlic releases a strong odor after tissue disruption by chewing or other mechanical effects. This odor is strongly associated with the volatile sulfur compounds that can be used for the characterization of garlic. This study investigated the interactions between topsoil properties and ecophysiological responses of Avicennia marina along the tidal gradient in an arid region in Qatar. In February 2017, three plots were established, each at a distance of 0 m (D0), 50 m (D50), and 100 m (D100) from the inland boundary of a mangrove forest. This study proposes an effective new fire detection method and monitoring software for an early-warning fire detection system aimed at valuable forested areas, such as botanical parks or high conservation value forests, particularly those with boundaries. This study was carried out to investigate the potential for the usability of treated olive mill wastewater (OMW) as an organic amendment in agricultural soils under Mediterranean climate conditions. OMW was treated by two different treatment processes as economical (E-OMW) and advanced (A-OMW). The treated OMWs and raw OMW (R-OMW) were applied to a loamy soil at a rate of 100 m3 ha-1 year-1 for 2 years. In this study, changes in some horticultural characteristics of jujube fruits at two ripening stages were investigated. The ripening stages were determined by reference degree (%) of the red zone on the surface of the fruit: white ripening stage (WR), 5-15%; red ripening stage (RR), 95-100%. Fruit weight, length, width, color, and firmness were examined as morphological characteristics; phenolics, organic acids, fatty acids, and sugars were evaluated as biochemical characteristics. In this study, genetic diversity among 71 bean genotypes (41 pinto beans and 30 fresh bean genotypes) and 4 commercial cultivars (Aleyna, Gina, Perolar, and Serra) commonly grown at Erzincan province in Turkey were investigated. The iPBS (inter-primer binding site) markers were used to investigate the genetic diversity of the genotypes. Polymorphism ratio was identified as 100% in all primers. Twenty-seven primers were studied and number of alleles in primers varied between 13?69 (with an average value of 37.14).
