Hardwood and pine stand volume estimates compiled from past field plot samples were compared to Lidar volume estimates through the interpretation of Lidar assessed height, crown width and trees per acre to ascertain if Lidar derived volume estimates can be used in lieu of traditional volume measurements.

Bottomland hardwoods are one of the most rapidly diminishing wetland ecosystems due to agricultural clearing, development, and reservoir construction. As society has become more aware of the functions of wetlands, so has the importance in conservation of these valuable resources. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of Remote Sensing and GIS based functional assessment to the field based Hydrogeomorphic (HGM) approach. Remote sensing models were developed using a combination of soil maps, soil information, QuickBird ® multispectral satellite imagery, LiDAR derived Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and LiDAR derived Canopy Height Model. To assist in detecting change over time for the forested landscape of George W. Pirtle Scout Reservation, Panola County, Texas, digital ortho-photography imagery (acquired 1996 and 2004) were used to designate forest cover types and hazard rating for forest insects and diseases. Status of camp grounds was ascertained and recommendations made for management using the GIS database created for the camp.

The pollen that falls to the surface at any given point is called the pollen rain. For most regions of the world the pollen rain provides a fairly reliable record of the plants that produce and disperse airborne pollen within a radius of about 30 km from the sampled location. To some extent the local pollen rain can also reflect limited information about the insect-pollinated plants living in a region. Since multi-source image classifications have the ability to exceed single source processes, such as traditional unsupervised classification methods, this paper will present the integration of four types of data: Lidar, elevation, multispectral and thermal. Using multi-source data and maximum likelihood classification methodology, as well as all possible permutations of data types, this paper will discuss ways to increase accuracy assessments of forested areas in east Texas and find the best combination of data sources.

Thinning removes trees within a stand to regulate the level of site occupancy and subsequent stand development. Before thinning is applied, foresters determine the amount of residual growing stock, the spatial distribution of the residual trees, and the criteria used to select trees to cut. In this study, a portion of a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantation was surveyed through a complete tree tally with the coordinates of each individual tree recorded. Timber production has been one of the most important industries in east Texas since the mid 19th century. For over 100 years, timber has represented one-third of all agricultural income in this region. In order to review forest landscape changes over time -- resulting from many years of management and investment -- historical satellite remote sensing data from 1974 to 2002 were used to determine landscape patterns and changes in four counties of east Texas : Angelina, Nacogdoches , San Augustine, and Shelby . The use of thermal infrared data to delineate seasonal relative forest ecosystem temperature zones as a tool for forest ecological studies was analyzed. Analysis involved: (1) delineating relative seasonal forest ecosystem temperature zones within the Clear Springs Wilderness Area of the Shawnee National Forest using Landsat Thematic Mapper thermal infrared data; and, (2) quantifying the effect of topography and forest biomass on relative forest ecosystem temperature zones within seasons. Results indicate that slope was statistically uncorrelated with relative temperature zones within any season, aspect was statistically correlated with relative temperature zones during fall and winter, and forest biomass was statistically …
