Multiphysics Modeling To Understand Microwave-Food Interactions In A Multi-Port Solid-State Microwave System., Kartik Verma

Masters Theses

Multiphysics modeling plays a crucial role in understanding the complexities of microwave-food interactions, especially in multi-port solid-state microwave systems where microwave parameters can be precisely and dynamically controlled. However, previous models using simplistic or manually measured oven geometries face challenges in accurately simulating the microwave heating process. This study first developed a robust 3-D scanning approach to capture precise geometric details of the oven cavity, incorporating them into multiphysics modeling for solid-state microwave heating. Furthermore, a quantitative validation approach was also developed to characterize modeling accuracy against experimental results. The results showed that multiphysics modeling with 3-D scanned geometry demonstrated …

Structural Optimization Design Of Swash Plate Capping Machine Cap Sorter Mechanism Based On Ansys Workbench, Gao Wen-Jiao, Yin Cheng-Long, Pan Zhong-Zheng, Jiang De-Fu, Ke Wan Jun 2023

Structural Optimization Design Of Swash Plate Capping Machine Cap Sorter Mechanism Based On Ansys Workbench, Gao Wen-Jiao, Yin Cheng-Long, Pan Zhong-Zheng, Jiang De-Fu, Ke Wan

Food and Machinery

Objective: This study aimed to improve the accuracy and feeding speed of the cap arranging unit. Methods: Using SolidWorks to build a virtual model and manufacture a real object, and the kinematic simulation of bottle cap and capping machine was carried out in Adams. Moreover, the results of different speeds were compared and analyzed. ANSYS Workbench was used to carry out engineering simulation of the device components and obtain their natural frequency and vibration mode, and the structural performance was optimized. Results: The cap arranging unit had the minimum damage to the caps at the optimum speed. The optimal speed …

Research On Wine Packaging Design Based On Chinese Character Modeling, Huang Shu-Jie Oct 2022

Research On Wine Packaging Design Based On Chinese Character Modeling, Huang Shu-Jie

Food and Machinery

Starting with the origin of Chinese characters and wine, the close relationship between Chinese characters and wine packaging were analyzed, and the characteristics of Chinese character wine packaging design were found out. Therefore, the Chinese character shaped wine packaging design methods were proposed from the two aspects of Chinese character "font" and "word meaning", which included direct display method, auxiliary integration method, deep expansion method, form meaning method and image construction method. Finally, four key points of Chinese character shaped wine packaging design were summarized.

Developing A Lab-Scale Fluidized Bed Dryer System To Enhance Rough Rice Drying Process, Kaushik Luthra Jul 2021

Developing A Lab-Scale Fluidized Bed Dryer System To Enhance Rough Rice Drying Process, Kaushik Luthra

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For more than half of the world's population, rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple meal. However, rice growers encounter difficulties supplying this demand, particularly in developing nations, where rice is susceptible to spoilage if the moisture content is not lowered to a safe level soon after harvest. As a result, traditional drying methods, such as sun drying and natural air drying, are commonly used by rice growers, particularly in underdeveloped nations. However, these procedures are time-consuming and can lead to rice spoilage. On the other hand, fluidized bed drying is a well-established technology that might give rice growers a …

Design And Analysis Of The Cylinder Cam Mechanism Of The Group Cover Machine, Li Gan, Yin Cheng-Long, Jiang De-Fu, Ke Wan Jan 2020

Design And Analysis Of The Cylinder Cam Mechanism Of The Group Cover Machine, Li Gan, Yin Cheng-Long, Jiang De-Fu, Ke Wan

Food and Machinery

The cam profile of the cylindrical cam mechanism of the bottle cap assembly machine is designed, the curve is fitted, the three-dimensional model of the SolidWorks is established, and the cylindrical cam and the cylindrical cam of the sinusoidal curve fitting are simulated in Adams by the cylindrical cam and the sinusoidal curve fitting of the five polynomial curve fitting. The result of the simulation is compared and analyzed, which shows that the design of the cam wheel can be used in the manufacture of the cylindrical cam mechanism of the actual group cover machine.

Analysis Of The Flow Behaviors Of Corn Meal During Extrusion, Daniel N. Hauersperger, Martin R. Okos, Troy Tonner Aug 2017

Analysis Of The Flow Behaviors Of Corn Meal During Extrusion, Daniel N. Hauersperger, Martin R. Okos, Troy Tonner

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Food extrusion can be used to make many products we consume today, including pasta, cereals and more. The ability to predict the characteristics of the final product from an extruder using raw material characteristics and operating conditions is vital to the extrusion process. In order to answer this need, the flow behavior of corn meal was measured in a lab viscometer (off-line) and compared to the flow behaviors from an extruder (in-line) at three different moisture contents (32.5%, 35%, 37.5% wet basis). The extruder and product are heated through the friction of the corn meal passing through the barrel not …

Coupled Electromagnetic And Heat Transfer Model For Microwave Heating In Domestic Ovens, Krishnamoorthy Pitchai, Sohan Birla, Jeyamkondan Subbiah, D. D. Jones, Harshanardhan Thippareddi Jan 2012

Coupled Electromagnetic And Heat Transfer Model For Microwave Heating In Domestic Ovens, Krishnamoorthy Pitchai, Sohan Birla, Jeyamkondan Subbiah, D. D. Jones, Harshanardhan Thippareddi

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Microwave ovens are used extensively for heating a variety of not-ready-to-eat food products. Non-uniform heating of foods in microwave ovens is a major concern in assuring microbiological safety of such products. The non-uniform heating of foods is attributed by complex interaction of microwaves with foods. To understand this complex interaction, a comprehensive model was developed to solve coupled electromagnetic and heat transfer equations using finite-difference time-domain based commercial software. The simulation parameters, cell size, heating time step, and number of iterations for steady state electromagnetic field were optimized. The model was validated by 30 s heating profile of a cylindrical …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Microwave (MW) ovens are used extensively for heating a variety of not-ready-to-eat food products. It is vital to achieve target temperature uniformly throughout the food to inactivate foodborne pathogens to assure safety. Non-uniform heating of foods in microwave ovens is the major concern in assuring microbiological safety of such products. The non-uniform heating of foods in domestic microwave ovens is due to complex interactions of microwaves with foods. A comprehensive coupled electromagnetic and heat transfer model was developed using finite-difference time-domain based numerical method to understand the complex interaction of microwaves with foods. Simulation parameters such as cell size, heating …
