Fall Risk In Sedentary, Recreationally Active, And Masters Athlete Older Adults, Felicia Elizabeth Squires
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine whether different habitual activity levels may affect balance ability in older adults. Balance must be studied as poor balance increases likelihood of falls. This study examined activity levels in older adults and effect on balance ability. Fifty-nine older adults aged 66.5 ± 9.5 participated. Three groups were separated by physical activity level. First group had 13 masters athletes, older adults performing least 150 minutes of aerobic activity a week and competing in nationally sanctioned event within the last six months. Twenty-seven older adults comprised recreationally active group performing at least 150 minutes …
Comparing Reaction Time And Postural Stabilization Based On Activity Groups In Older Adults, Lauren Marie Merk
Comparing Reaction Time And Postural Stabilization Based On Activity Groups In Older Adults, Lauren Marie Merk
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare reaction time and postural stabilization between activity groups in older adults. These variables are important because older adults are at a high fall risk and two major contributors to fall risk are postural stabilization and reaction time. This study examined if the activity group of an older adult had any influence on reaction time and postural stabilization. Fifty-nine older adults aged 66.46 ± 9.47 years old were used in the study. Thirteen subjects were in the master’s athletes which are individuals over the age of 40 who competed in a nationally sanctioned …
The Effect Of Blinded Hydration State On Thermoregulation And Performance In Male Cyclists, Jon David Adams
The Effect Of Blinded Hydration State On Thermoregulation And Performance In Male Cyclists, Jon David Adams
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of these studies was to observe the effect of dehydration on exercise performance while subjects were blinded to their hydration status. Methods: Study 1: Seven male cyclists (weight: 71±8 kg, body fat: 14±6%, VO2peak: 59.4±6 ml∙kg-1·min-1) exercised for 2 hours on a cycle ergometer at 55% VO2peak, in a hot-dry environment (35°C, 30% rh), with a nasogastric (NG) tube under euhydrated (EUH-NT) and hypohydrated (DEH-NT) conditions. In both trials, thirst was matched by drinking 25 mL every 5 min. In the EUH-NT trial sweat losses were fully replaced via the NG tube. Following the 2 hours of …
Comparing Before-And After-School Neurocognitive Performance In High School Athletes- Implications For Concussion Management, Morgan Anderson
Comparing Before-And After-School Neurocognitive Performance In High School Athletes- Implications For Concussion Management, Morgan Anderson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are several factors that influence computerized neurocognitive testing performance however, one factor that has not been examined is the potential deleterious effects of cognitive fatigue from an academic school day combined with time of computerized neurocognitive testing (CNT) administration. The primary purpose of this study was to compare before-and after-school CNT performance and total symptoms in non-concussed high school student athletes. The secondary purpose of this study was to compare before-school and after-school CNT performance and total symptoms and chronotypes in non-concussed student athletes. A crossover design was used to compare before-and after-school CNT performance and total symptoms of …
Hydration Biomarkers And Water Intake In 3-13 Year-Old Boys, Zoe P. Mckinney
Hydration Biomarkers And Water Intake In 3-13 Year-Old Boys, Zoe P. Mckinney
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background/Introduction: Hydration is an important aspect of health in children. Despite being important, limited information is available regarding children’s water intake and hydration. Interestingly, most studies assess hydration status based on a single random urine sample instead of a 24-h one. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of dehydration and water intake in boys 3 to 13 years-old. Methods: Forty-six healthy boys were recruited for the study. Each subject recorded food and fluid intake in a diary on a Saturday and Sunday. They also collected their 24-h urine on Sunday. The 24-h sample was analyzed …
Effect Of Urinary Urge On Using Urinary Frequency As An Indicator Of Hydration Status, Mackenzie Cale
Effect Of Urinary Urge On Using Urinary Frequency As An Indicator Of Hydration Status, Mackenzie Cale
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: Void Frequency (VF) has recently been determined as a valid and reliable marker of 24-hr hydration status when void urgency is controlled (i.e., urinating at “first urge”). Limitations for real world applicability of this technique are apparent because individuals often void at varying urge levels throughout the day. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if urgency affects the validity of void number as a marker of hydration status. We hypothesized that void urgency would not affect the validity of void number as a way to assess hydration status. Methodology: Participants included 18 females and 13 …
The Contribution Of Solid Food On Total Water Intake In 3-13 Y Children, Audrey Caroline Smith
The Contribution Of Solid Food On Total Water Intake In 3-13 Y Children, Audrey Caroline Smith
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction: Adequate hydration is important element of good health. Several studies indicate that the majority of kids are hypohydrated and do not meet dietary water intake guidelines. Some scientist also suggest that good hydration might be achieved by large consumption of food that are rich in water (i.e. fruits and vegetables). However, the information of food consumption on total water intake in children is limited.
Purpose: We evaluated the contribution of water from solid food on total water intake in children.
Methodology: For this cross-sectional study 81 children (35 female) 3 to 13 years old were randomly recruited to participate. …
Validity Of Daytime Urinary Frequency As A Tool For Assessing Hydration, Monica Ziebart
Validity Of Daytime Urinary Frequency As A Tool For Assessing Hydration, Monica Ziebart
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction: It is known that 24-h void number is a valid way to assess hydration status. However, no studies have examined if urinary frequency just during the waking hours (~18 h) is a valid indicator of hydration status. Purpose: This study was conducted in order to determine if void number during only the waking hours was a valid indicator of hydration status compared to total voids over a 24-hour period. Methods: The subjects in this study consisted of 14 males and 18 females 18-80 yrs old who were healthy and not currently taking any body fluid altering medications. This study …

Examining Fear Of Re-Injury In High School Athletes With Sport-Related Concussion, Melissa Nicole Anderson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent consensus statements have advocated for research on the emotional sequelae that is associated with sport-related concussion (McCrory et al., 2012). However, changes in fear of re-injury throughout SRC recovery are understudied. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to describe fear of re-injury in high school athletes with SRC, and 2) to document changes in fear of re-injury throughout SRC recovery. This study addressed several exploratory questions regarding fear of re-injury in high school athletes with SRC that pertain to identifying predictors of fear of re-injury as well as examining the relationship between fear of re-injury and locus …
