Microfabricated Surfaces For The Physical Capture Of Insects, Catherine Loudon, Robert Corn, Megan Szyndler, Kenneth F. Haynes, Michael F. Potter Apr 2018

Microfabricated Surfaces For The Physical Capture Of Insects, Catherine Loudon, Robert Corn, Megan Szyndler, Kenneth F. Haynes, Michael F. Potter

Entomology Faculty Patents

Novel devices and methods of capturing, controlling and preventing infestation of insects using microfabricated surfaces are provided. In particular, a mechanism of insect capture inspired by the microstructures of the leaf surfaces of plants and the key features of those surfaces with respect to the capture and control of pests have been determined and engineered into a variety of microfabricated surfaces capable of reproducing the effectiveness of these physical capture methods.

Composition And Methods For Pest Control Management, Bruce Webb, Kendra Hitz Steele, Angelika Fath-Goodin Sep 2017

Composition And Methods For Pest Control Management, Bruce Webb, Kendra Hitz Steele, Angelika Fath-Goodin

Entomology Faculty Patents

Disclosed are genetically modified nudiviruses capable of being sexually transmitted by an insect useful for controlling pest populations. The genetically modified nudiviruses are capable of causing sterility in a target population of insects. Also disclosed are insects infected with the disclosed genetically modified nudiviruses, methods of making the genetically modified nudiviruses, and methods of using the genetically modified nudiviruses to control an insect pest population.

Gene Expression Modulation System For Use In Plants And Method For Modulating Gene Expression In Plants, Subba Reddy Palli, Ajay Kumar Singh Feb 2012

Gene Expression Modulation System For Use In Plants And Method For Modulating Gene Expression In Plants, Subba Reddy Palli, Ajay Kumar Singh

Entomology Faculty Patents

An EcR-based gene expression modulation system for use in plants includes an EcR gene expression cassette, a modified RXR gene expression cassette, and a gene-of-interest expression cassette, which can be expressed in a host plant cell.

Transfected Mosquito Vectors, Stephen L. Dobson Jan 2011

Transfected Mosquito Vectors, Stephen L. Dobson

Entomology Faculty Patents

A method is provided for producing an artificial infection in a Culicidae (mosquito) species. The mosquitoes include species within the subfamilies Culicinae and Anophelinae, and the species include Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti and Aedes polynesiensis infected with a Wolbachia infection. The infection may be a strain of Wolbachia which does not normally or naturally infect the selected mosquito species. The artificially infected Aedes mosquito can be introduced into a mosquito population to control the reproduction capability of the population by introducing an incompatible Wolbachia infection. The present method can be used as a novel means to limit mosquito-borne pathogens and …

Cell Lines Having Enhanced Cell Longevity And Protein Expression, Bruce Allen Webb, Jeremy Kroemer Nov 2010

Cell Lines Having Enhanced Cell Longevity And Protein Expression, Bruce Allen Webb, Jeremy Kroemer

Entomology Faculty Patents

It is the object of the current invention to provide methods and compositions relating to the expression of vankyrin proteins in cell lines to increase their viability, longevity and capacity for protein production. The inventors have discovered that the expression of P-ank-1 and I2-ank-3 proteins in cell culture has increased the cells' longevity and capacity for endogenous and/or heterologous target protein production. Specifically, the present invention relates to the enhanced expression of endogenous and/or heterologous target proteins/polypeptides in recombinant cells that are also expressing P-ank-1 and/or I2-ank-3 protein compared to expression host cells that are not …

Viral And Insect Genes That Inhibit The Immune System And Methods Of Use Thereof, Bruce A. Webb, Liwang Cui Oct 1998

Viral And Insect Genes That Inhibit The Immune System And Methods Of Use Thereof, Bruce A. Webb, Liwang Cui

Entomology Faculty Patents

Viral, endoparasitoid and/or host genes that specifically inhibit the immune response of insect pests, useful for broadening the host range of insect viruses. Symbiont viruses of insect pests are genetically modified to express immune-suppressing proteins or biologically active fragments thereof and, optionally toxins, to increase the virus host range and/or improve the efficacy of insect pathogens.

Automated Adjustable Interval Insect Trap, Yongbiao Liu, Kenneth F. Haynes Jul 1994

Automated Adjustable Interval Insect Trap, Yongbiao Liu, Kenneth F. Haynes

Entomology Faculty Patents

An automated, adjustable-interval insect trap includes a plurality of individual cards having a surface coated with insect adhesive to capture insects. The cards are received on trays having wheels that engage a series of four parallel guide rails. By operation of a positioning mechanism, the trays carrying the cards are moved along the guide rails, one at a time, into an insect capturing position for a selected time interval. The positioning mechanism includes a timer, a drive motor, an axle operatively connected to the drive motor and a series of spaced fan plates mounted on the axle at longitudinally spaced …
