How Do Entomologists Use Insects To Determine Pmi, Johnnie Erskine
How Do Entomologists Use Insects To Determine Pmi, Johnnie Erskine
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The use of forensic entomology is one of the fastest growing methods used to determine the cause of death by law enforcement personnel. This paperexplores and examines the various insects that are found on dead bodies during different time periods. The purpose of this paper is also to analyze and evaluate how forensic entomology is beneficial when compared to the other methods of forensic science that are used in crime investigations. Goff (2000) states, “anyone involved in death investigations quickly becomes aware of the connection between dead bodies and maggots.” (Goff, 2000). Insects are used to help with the recycling …

The primary purpose of this manual is to prepare candidates interested in becoming certified pesticide applicators in Nebraska Category 11, Fumigation. This category includes commercial and non-commercial applicators who use or supervise the use of restricted use pesticides in solid or gaseous formulations within enclosed tight spaces such as tents, vaults, tarped stacks, structures, vehicles or vessels for a wide variety of conditions or commodities, including raw agricultural products.
Not included in the scope of this manual is soil fumigation, Category 1(a). The greatest demand for fumigation is for commodities, food products and food processing facilities. Target pests are mostly …
Some Aspects Of Woodpecker Predation On The Spruce Beetle In Colorado, Steven R. Helm
Some Aspects Of Woodpecker Predation On The Spruce Beetle In Colorado, Steven R. Helm
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Historic data on predation by woodpeckers, primarily the American three-toed woodpecker (Picoides dorsalis), on epidemic levels of the spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) in Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) forests of Colorado are analyzed in this report. Significant differences in beetle consumption by male and female woodpeckers as well as seasonal differences in beetle consumption by woodpeckers in general were discovered through statistical analyses. Potential ecological explanations for observed differences are discussed.

Scientific Illustrations Of Beetles From Maryland And Virginia, Sarah Zuehlke
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
This project involves illustrated beetles commonly found in Maryland and Virginia. Scientific illustrations were created using techniques including graphite pencils, scratchboard, pen and ink, and colored pencils. Educational applications for this project include highlights for science lessons. Descriptions, habitat, and diet information were included with each beetle illustration. Collection tips for each species were provided. Illustration technique used were included for each beetle. All illustrations are original hand drawn work.

Integrated Pest Management Plan, Bryon Kacprzyk
Integrated Pest Management Plan, Bryon Kacprzyk
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
This Integrated Pest Management Plan is to provide a framework through which pest management is defined and accomplished in northern Lowndes County in Georgia and focusing on Moody AFB. The plan identifies elements of the program to include health, environmental protection, safety, training, pest identification and pest management. This plan is to be used as a tool to reduce pesticide use, enhance environmental protection, and maximize the use of integrated pest management techniques. The overall objective of the program is to provide guidance for operating an effective pest management program. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles are stressed and application of …

Mosquito Abatement Monitoring: West Nile In Los Angeles County, Elisa Gonzalez
Mosquito Abatement Monitoring: West Nile In Los Angeles County, Elisa Gonzalez
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
West Nile virus (WNV) has become established across the U.S. with heightened activity causing significant human illness. Monitoring methods to predict the risk of human infection are urgently need to initiate timely preventative measures and justify the expense of implementing costly or unpopular control measures, such as aerial spraying or curfews. This research outlines several ways to further improve the productive power of monitoring mosquitoes. These results demonstrate that mosquito monitoring provides a valuable public health tool for assessing the risk of human arboviral infections, allocating limited public health resources, and justifying emergency control actions.
A key challenge has been …
Understanding And Controlling The Red Legged Ham Beetle (Necropia Rufipes), Alexandria Hammel
Understanding And Controlling The Red Legged Ham Beetle (Necropia Rufipes), Alexandria Hammel
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The Red Legged Ham Beetle (Necrobia rufipes), RLHB has fascinated me since the moment we met. The beautiful greens and blues that sparkle from its elytra, the sharp and fast red legs that flash just below the body and just last month I was able to see a RLHB in flight for the first time. My squeal of delight was not left un-mocked by my coworkers. This beetle is a detrimental and determined stored product pest. One that, we in the pet food business, don’t take lightly. This generated a need for control in warehousing as distribution but …

Managing The Economy Of Public Mosquito Control Thresholds, Peter T. Taylor
Managing The Economy Of Public Mosquito Control Thresholds, Peter T. Taylor
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Seventy-four mosquito surveillance data sets involving over 35 species, from January 2013 to December of 2014 have been obtained with permission from Dr. Carl Boohene and Polk County Mosquito Control District in Central Florida and used as data for this project. These data are utilized to propose a practical, economically-based decision rule model that uniquely integrates human populations with mosquito species populations and budgetary constraints. Two different decision rule conventions are proposed and the choice to go with one of them reflects differing economic expenditure inroads on budgeted chemical and equipment resources. In general, if the threshold is higher, then …

Kit 16A- Insect Adaptation This kit serves as an introduction to a variety of insect adaptations. Learn about how insects adjust to their environment with this selection of images and sounds of various insects. Insects communicate with sound, with visuals, they walk, run, fly, and sometimes even swim, some insects are capable of camouflage, and others are pollinators. This kit provides a book focusing on the chirping of crickets, the reasons they chirp, as well as how they do it as well as a variety of pictures of other insects and their different adaptations that allow then to survive in …

Let’S Go Find A Bug, Jonathan Mcghee
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The insect world is largely a mystery to many people. In fact, large parts of the insect world are mysteries to even those that study them. With the help of an extraordinary camera man, a vision, and the spirit of adventure, we set off on an endeavor to bring the minute insect world to the everyday person. Please join us as we capture a small amount of the biodiversity of Southern California and bring it right to your front door. Let’s go find a bug.
