One of the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) practice-based
competencies for genetic counselors is “Apply genetic counseling skills in a culturally
responsive and respectful manner to all clients.” Yet, the extent and approach in which cultural competency training is incorporated into genetic counseling training programs varies greatly. Simulated patients have been increasingly used in genetic counseling training to help students practice foundational skills in a low stakes environment.
