Geological Field Guide To The Cedar Point Biological Station, Keith County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Roger K. Pabian

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This field guide was produced by staff members of the Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska originally in 1979 at the request of Dr. Brent Nickol, former Director of the Cedar Point Biological Station. It is an introduction to the geologic history and paleoecology of the Cedar Point area intended for students, staff, and other persons using the camp. This revision has been made some 15 years after the first version to reflect changes in ideas resulting from new data collected during that time.

Users of this guide should take care when studying the rock exposures described …

G93-1131 Clover Mites And Their Management, Shripat T. Kamble, David L. Keith, Robert W. Davis Jan 1993

G93-1131 Clover Mites And Their Management, Shripat T. Kamble, David L. Keith, Robert W. Davis

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This guide describes the life cycle of clover mites and offers strategies for controlling them.

Clover mites are common nuisance pests in Nebraska, often invading homes and other properties in enormous numbers. These tiny pests are most troublesome in early spring and again in fall, especially on the east and south sides of buildings. Also, they frequently appear on window sills during the winter months, on relatively warm, calm, sunny days. The clover mite is not an insect but is a relative of spiders and ticks. The full-grown clover mite is slightly smaller than a pin head and has a …

G93-1147 Preventing Bacterial Contamination, Medication And Other Chemical Residues In Poultry Meat And Eggs, Eva Wallner-Pendleton, Norman Schneider, Susan Sumner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide deals with food safety in home broiler or table egg production flocks.

Food safety issues such as drug and pesticide residues and bacterial contamination have received a lot of attention from the media lately. While this attention has focused predominantly on practices by the large commercial livestock and poultry industries, procedures to assure food safety and quality should be practiced by home flock producers as well.

G93-1182 Best Management Practices For Agricultural Pesticides To Protect Water Resources, Robert J. Wright, J. F. Witkowski, Larry D. Schulze Jan 1993

G93-1182 Best Management Practices For Agricultural Pesticides To Protect Water Resources, Robert J. Wright, J. F. Witkowski, Larry D. Schulze

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses what happens to pesticides after application, factors affecting pesticide movement, and best management practices to minimize the potential for pesticide contamination of ground and surface water.

Users of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals must take appropriate precautions to reduce the risks of moving these materials into ground or surface water. The primary consideration should be whether the chemical is needed. If pesticides are needed, then the characteristics of the chemical, the sensitivity of the application site and the method of application should be considered.

G93-1191 Glossary Of Water-Related Terms, William L. Kranz, Delynn Hay, James W. Goeke, David Gosselin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide is a glossary of water quantity, quality and human health related terms involving water. Terms are defined in contexts that could affect Nebraskans. We depend upon water for our very existence. The impact of water quality and quantity issues has never been greater. Yet the terminology used to describe the water we drink, the water we provide to plants and animals, the water stored underground, in lakes, rivers, and oceans, is not well understood by many Nebraskans. This listing of water-related terms is intended to reduce the potential for misunderstanding presentations made by elected officials, environmental agencies and …

G93-1128 Understanding Groundwater, William L. Kranz, Delynn Hay, James W. Goeke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide provides information on how groundwater exists, where it exists, and how it moves. Key definitions are highlighted. Water is the life blood of every living creature on earth. Approximately 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water. Through the wonders of nature, water can take on many different forms, from the water we drink, to the ice we use to chill a glass of lemonade, to the water vapor used to steam clean equipment. It is easy to understand the significance water plays in our lives, but it may be much more difficult to understand the …

Ec93-126 Procedures For Field Demonstrations Of Nitrogen Management Practices, Edwin J. Penas, Richard B. Ferguson, Gary W. Hergert, Charles A. Shapiro, G.D. Binford

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Nitrate-nitrogen in groundwater is a major public concern. Agriculture is often targeted as the primary source; however, crop producers are reluctant to reduce the amount of nitrogen they apply in fear of reducing crop yields and profits. Soil testing for nitrate-nitrogen is being promoted as a way to fine-tune or improve nitrogen management, but adoption by producers has been slow. This publication explains how to conduct a field demonstration using scientifically acceptable methods that are practical for on-farm use.
