A Study Of Exposure To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Polymorphisms In The Tumor Suppressor Gene, P53, Of Wild Menhaden, Samantha Rose Reed

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The British Petroleum (BP) Deep Water Horizon Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) caused detrimental effects to wildlife including marine fish populations (Diercks, et al. 2010). The fish were exposed to crude oil which contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Some PAHs are carcinogens and can damage DNA in key regulatory genes in various species (Milleman, et al. 2015; Nadler, 2017). Menhaden are oily, filter feeding fish and incorporate and retain these lipophilic contaminants at high levels. The objective of the present work was to search for genetic mutations on the tumor suppressor gene, p53, in various organs …

Hydraulic Fracturing Fluid Biocide, Tributyl Tetradecyl Phosphonium Chloride, Causes Mitochondrial Dysfunction That Is Enhanced By Sodium Chloride In Chironomus Riparius, Zainab Hussain Alali Feb 2018

Hydraulic Fracturing Fluid Biocide, Tributyl Tetradecyl Phosphonium Chloride, Causes Mitochondrial Dysfunction That Is Enhanced By Sodium Chloride In Chironomus Riparius, Zainab Hussain Alali

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Tributyl tetradecyl phosphonium chloride (TTPC) is a biocide utilized in the hydraulic fracturing process to extract oil and natural gas from deep underground. This study used 4th instar Chironomus riparius to investigate the toxicity of TTPC, NaCl, and TTPC+NaCl. Our results show that the 24 h LC50s for TTPC, NaCl, and TTPC+NaCl were 0.57 mg/L, >10,000 mg/L, and 0.32 mg/L, respectively, while the 48 h LC50s for the same treatments were 0.48 mg/L, 9808 mg/L, and 0.22 mg/L, respectively. Additionally, TTPC’s mechanism of action was investigated by measuring the levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), superoxide …

Palynological Evidence For The Paleoenvironmental History Of The Miocene Llanos Basin, Eastern Colombia, Ingrid Carolina Romero Valero Apr 2014

Palynological Evidence For The Paleoenvironmental History Of The Miocene Llanos Basin, Eastern Colombia, Ingrid Carolina Romero Valero

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The distal Llanos foreland basin was influenced by subsidence events since the Cretaceous until the Pliocene. Although this area has been extensively explored and is considered a potential oil reservoir, few studies of its stratigraphy and depositional environments have been conducted. This basin exhibits a geological section of Miocene age and the core Saltarin-1A, analyzed in this study, is the first and most complete drilling coreof this section with 680 meters. It represents to Carbonera, Leon and Guayabo Formations. Based on palynological data, this work has as its main aims to review the biostratigraphy, to identify the depositional environments, including …

Chironomid Hemoglobin Genetic Diversity As An Indicator Of The New Jersey Hackensack Meadowlands Wetland Health, Lene Marie De Coursin Jacobs Aug 2006

Chironomid Hemoglobin Genetic Diversity As An Indicator Of The New Jersey Hackensack Meadowlands Wetland Health, Lene Marie De Coursin Jacobs

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Kearny Marsh located within the Hackensack Meadowlands is a freshwater wetland impacted by multiple environmental stressors from human activity. The marsh is located in the northeastern New Jersey metropolitan area. Chironomid larvae, aquatic larvae of midge fly, were analyzed from two Kearny Marsh sample sites, W9 and W22. A previous sediment analysis and toxicity study characterized heavy metal contaminants the marsh. The data results were applied in this thesis study to determine the correlation between environmental stressors and chironomid genetic diversity. Site W9 sediment was impacted by severe levels of total heavy metal contamination, whereas site W22 had just below …
