Population Dynamics And Genetic Structure Of Louisiana Black Bears In The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley Of Louisiana, Jared Scott Laufenberg Aug 2014

Population Dynamics And Genetic Structure Of Louisiana Black Bears In The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley Of Louisiana, Jared Scott Laufenberg

Doctoral Dissertations

In 1992, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service granted the Louisiana black bear threatened status under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, listing loss and fragmentation of habitat as the primary threats. The 1995 Recovery Plan outlines recovery goals designed to meet the objective of reducing threats to the Louisiana black bear metapopulation and supporting habitat. To meet that objective, the Recovery Plan requires 1) at least 2 viable subpopulations, 1 each in the Tensas and Atchafalaya River Basins, 2) movement corridors between the 2 viable subpopulations, and 3) long-term protection of the habitat supporting each viable subpopulation and interconnecting corridors …

Estimating Population Parameters Of The Louisiana Black Bear In The Upper Atchafalaya River Basin, Carrie Lynne Lowe May 2011

Estimating Population Parameters Of The Louisiana Black Bear In The Upper Atchafalaya River Basin, Carrie Lynne Lowe

Masters Theses

In 1992, the Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) was granted threatened status under the Endangered Species Act primarily because of extensive habitat loss and fragmentation. Currently, the Louisiana black bear is restricted to 3 relatively small, disjunct breeding subpopulations located in the Tensas River Basin of northeast Louisiana, the upper Atchafalaya River Basin (ARB) of south-central Louisiana, and coastal Louisiana. The 1995 Recovery Plan mandates research to determine the viability of the remaining subpopulations. I conducted a capture-mark-recapture study during 2007–2009 to estimate population parameters for the ARB bear subpopulation by collecting hair samples (n = …

Conservation Genetics And The Ctenosaura Palearis Clade, Stesha Ann Pasachnik Aug 2010

Conservation Genetics And The Ctenosaura Palearis Clade, Stesha Ann Pasachnik

Doctoral Dissertations

We are now in the midst of a mass extinction crisis. The top threats to biodiversity include habitat destruction, pollution, over-harvesting, and invasive species. The field of conservation genetics seeks to understand these threats and devise management to preserve taxa with the ability to cope with environmental change. Preserving genetic variation and the processes in which variation is created and maintained is vital to long-term conservation goals. Limited conservation resources are cause for the prioritization of taxa and areas. Nine basic methods of prioritization have been developed. Though there are differences in these methods, and thus in the resulting target …
