Synthesis Of An Amide-Based Extended Heterocyclic System Capable Of Hydrogen Bonding To Both The Adenine And Uracil In Dsrna For Rna Recognition Using Pna, John M. Talbott, Aubrey L. Maryniak Jul 2019

Synthesis Of An Amide-Based Extended Heterocyclic System Capable Of Hydrogen Bonding To Both The Adenine And Uracil In Dsrna For Rna Recognition Using Pna, John M. Talbott, Aubrey L. Maryniak

Landmark Conference Summer Research Symposium

The majority of information known about RNA is centered around coding RNA for its role in synthesizing proteins from DNA. However, noncoding RNA is also biologically relevant, showing importance in gene expression and catalyzing reactions. Peptide Nucleic Acids, or PNAs, are a promising tool that can be used to study noncoding RNA. PNAs can bind to double-stranded RNA forming a triple helix and are highly selective for specific sequences of dsRNA. A current limitation of PNA as a ligand is that traditional nucleobases only bind with high affinity to single purine residues on the RNA, as triplex formation relies on …

Exploring The Synthesis Of Substituted Porphyrins, Christina Schnee Jul 2019

Exploring The Synthesis Of Substituted Porphyrins, Christina Schnee

Landmark Conference Summer Research Symposium

A current theme in our research laboratory is the development of low cost methods for the synthesis of lamellar vesicles as models for cell membranes. These vesicles, serving as simplified artificial cells, allow us to examine fundamental properties of the membrane including transport of materials across the membrane. Vesicles of varying size can also be employed as molecule delivery systems for a variety of compounds, including pharmaceuticals. We are especially interested in pharmaceuticals used in photodynamic therapy. This type of medical intervention entails delivery of a prodrug (one which is not initially bio-active). Upon exposure to a specific wavelength of …

Development Of A One-Pot Allylation And Claisen Rearrangement Of Acetaminophen By Applying Microwave Radiation, Brandon R. Tessier Jul 2019

Development Of A One-Pot Allylation And Claisen Rearrangement Of Acetaminophen By Applying Microwave Radiation, Brandon R. Tessier

Landmark Conference Summer Research Symposium

The Claisen rearrangement is a widely applicable organic reaction that involves the shift of a sigma bond across the pi-system of an allyl vinyl ether to produce allylated phenols. In this project, we aim to develop a microwave assisted allylation of a phenol, followed by a subsequent Claisen rearrangement in one pot. The goals of this project are three-fold. First, we aim to accelerate these reactions using microwave assisted organic synthesis because to date, microwave technology has been sparsely used in Claisen chemistry. Second, we aim to perform these reactions in a single pot, enhancing the simplicity and elegance of …

The Relationship Between Insect Visitors And Chemical Fragrance Composition Of Cypripedium Parviflorum Var. Pubescens In Central Virginia., Ruth Elkins Apr 2019

The Relationship Between Insect Visitors And Chemical Fragrance Composition Of Cypripedium Parviflorum Var. Pubescens In Central Virginia., Ruth Elkins

Student Scholar Showcase

Due to its rarity, little is known regarding which insects pollinate Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens, large yellow lady slipper orchids, and why they do so when offered no reward. Insect identification and fragrance composition data have been collected from two populations of large yellow lady slippers in Central Virginia for more than a decade. This research analyzed data in order to determine potential relationships between visiting insects and fragrance compositions of the orchid. The results of this research can be used to establish and protect populations of Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens.

Abiotic Stress And Anthocyanins Biosynthesis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Carolanne Bekus Apr 2019

Abiotic Stress And Anthocyanins Biosynthesis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Carolanne Bekus

Student Scholar Showcase

Crops and farmers today are facing unprecedented challenges due to the changing environment. The plants of the future need to be hardy to survive harsh environmental conditions such as increased temperature, and prolonged droughts. It is imperative to understand the mechanisms plants employ to protect themselves under these types of stresses. Anthocyanins are pigments of the flavonoid subclass produced by plants. They impart red to purple color to flowers, fruits, and seeds. They also have antioxidant properties and they contribute to stress tolerance in plants. They are understood to be produced under abiotic stresses in order to protect the plant. …

Age Status Effects On Female Silk Production And Male Courtship Response In Dolomedes Scriptus, Joseph Osborne Apr 2019

Age Status Effects On Female Silk Production And Male Courtship Response In Dolomedes Scriptus, Joseph Osborne

Student Scholar Showcase

Female Dolomedes scriptus, the striped fishing spider, serve as model organisms exhibiting pheromone production as a means of chemical signaling. Previous work has shown that male fishing spiders are responsive to female silk, and preferentially court in the presence of silk from mature virgins. In our research, we hypothesized that mature females produced larger quantities of silk than penultimate females in an attempt to elicit greater male mating response. Female spiders of both age statuses were kept for two days in a gridded tank. Sub-sampling of silk lines that crossed a random portion of the grid produced results signifying …

A Chemical In Filter Paper Interferes With Trail Following Behavior In The Termite Reticulitermes Hesperus (Banks), Kathryn Vest Apr 2019

A Chemical In Filter Paper Interferes With Trail Following Behavior In The Termite Reticulitermes Hesperus (Banks), Kathryn Vest

Student Scholar Showcase

Termites follow chemical trails. In previous experiments we dissolved and diluted chemicals in acetone to test if they elicited trail following. Each trail was a straight line across the arena drawn with 10 µl using a glass capillary (Microcaps). We noticed a minor but stable response to trails laid with pure acetone. The response could be caused by contaminated acetone or by a chemical in the filter paper (Watman #5) that lined our arena (petri dish, 10cm diameter). We could confirm that the termites respond to acetone alone. Soxkhlet extraction for 8 hours removed the signal from the filter paper. …

Uncertainties Treatment For Wastewater-Based Epidemiological Estimation Of The Consumption Of Illicit And Prescribed Neuropsychiatric Drugs In Two Urban Communities In Kentucky Using Ammonium Normalized Population And Monte Carlo Simulation, Rhinannon Huffines, Tara Croft, Manoj Pathak, Bikram Subedi Apr 2019

Uncertainties Treatment For Wastewater-Based Epidemiological Estimation Of The Consumption Of Illicit And Prescribed Neuropsychiatric Drugs In Two Urban Communities In Kentucky Using Ammonium Normalized Population And Monte Carlo Simulation, Rhinannon Huffines, Tara Croft, Manoj Pathak, Bikram Subedi

Scholars Week

The conventional estimation of the prevalence of substance use in a community based on self-reported surveys typically underestimates the actual consumption. Drug’s residues in raw wastewater collected from the centralized wastewater treatment plants were utilized – Wastewater-Based Epidemiology (WBE) – to determine the consumption rate of illicit and prescribed neuropsychiatric residues in two urban communities in eastern Kentucky and two rural communities in western Kentucky. The ammonical nitrogen content in raw wastewater samples was used to minimize the uncertainty associated with the population dynamicity. Uncertainties associated with the several WBE parameters to back-calculate the consumption rate of drugs such as …
