Evaluating Changes In Visible To Short-Wave Infrared Spectral Reflectance Of Arctic Mosses In Response To Experimental Drying To Find The Best Predictors Of Moisture Content, Steven L. Unger Nov 2021

Evaluating Changes In Visible To Short-Wave Infrared Spectral Reflectance Of Arctic Mosses In Response To Experimental Drying To Find The Best Predictors Of Moisture Content, Steven L. Unger

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mosses are a dominant understory component in the Arctic and because of sparse canopy cover, contribute to spectral signals used in remote sensing estimates of various ecologically important characteristics such as productivity, phenology, and vegetation mapping. However, little is known about their contributions to community level spectra or how moisture content influences those spectral signals. Unlike vascular plants, mosses cannot actively regulate moisture content and are highly susceptible to desiccation. Previous research has shown that moss reflectance is sensitive to tissue moisture content. Here, a lab-controlled drying experiment was conducted to identify the best spectral predictors of moisture content of …

Bryophyte Ecosystem Services: How Bryophytes Impact Ecosystem Processes And Their Use In Urban Systems, Keila Spangler Jun 2021

Bryophyte Ecosystem Services: How Bryophytes Impact Ecosystem Processes And Their Use In Urban Systems, Keila Spangler

University Honors Theses

Bryophytes, which include mosses, liverworts, and hornworts, are non-vascular plants that provide crucial ecosystem services in natural and urban systems. In natural systems, these services include carbon, water, and nutrient cycling and maintenance of community level biodiversity. In urban systems, bryophytes can be used as green roof substrate, as bioindicators to monitor pollution and air quality, for horticulture uses, and in medicine. Although bryophytes possess some qualities, such as reproduction by spores, that may give them an advantage compared to vascular plants as the climate warms, their response to climate change remains understudied. This paper will review the literature on …

Examining The Maternal Investment Of The Calyptra And Its Influence On The Sporophyte Offspring, Alessandra Marie Cabrera Aromin May 2021

Examining The Maternal Investment Of The Calyptra And Its Influence On The Sporophyte Offspring, Alessandra Marie Cabrera Aromin

Masters Theses

Maternal care is a critical component of offspring survival, development, and fitness in many organisms. In early diverging lineages of plants (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts), offspring sporophytes are physically attached to and nutritionally dependent on the maternal gametophyte throughout their lifespan. Mosses have a unique structure that is a maternal cap of gametophyte tissue that covers the sporophyte apex during critical developmental stages. The calyptra has shown to positively impact sporophyte survival and fitness. My research examines the influence of calyptra size on sporophyte growth and development.

Discovery Of Epiphytic Lichens In Connecticut Suggests Novel Introduction And Reintroduction Via Horticultural Practices, Henry A. Frye, Zachary Muscavitch, Bernard Goffinet Apr 2021

Discovery Of Epiphytic Lichens In Connecticut Suggests Novel Introduction And Reintroduction Via Horticultural Practices, Henry A. Frye, Zachary Muscavitch, Bernard Goffinet

EEB Articles

The discovery of Teloschistes chrysophthalmus in Connecticut more than one hundred years since its last known occurrence is argued to result from human introduction. The species only occurred on the horticultural tree, Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis, planted on the University of Connecticut campus. Gleditsia triacanthos is not indigenous to northeastern North America, but is widespread in the central United States. Other epiphytic macrolichens also recorded on this phorophyte include Punctelia bolliana and Parmotrema austrosinense, both widespread in the central United States, and new to Connecticut and New England, respectively. This is likely the first reported case of combined …

Diversidad Y Distribución Espacial Del Género Plagiochila Plagiochilaceae. Marchantiophyta En Colombia, Jonatan Alejandro Yepes Giraldo Jan 2021

Diversidad Y Distribución Espacial Del Género Plagiochila Plagiochilaceae. Marchantiophyta En Colombia, Jonatan Alejandro Yepes Giraldo
