Characterization And Tissue-Specific As Well As Heat-Stress Expression Analysis Of Cbl-Interacting Protein Kinase Genes In Dimocarpus Longan Lour, Wei Zheng, Xueming Dong, Xuefei Yu, Qiuying Zhang
Turkish Journal of Botany
The CBL-interacting protein kinase (CIPK) gene family plays important roles in plant growth, development, and responses to abiotic stresses. To date, the CIPKs have been extensively identified and characterized in various plants. However, there have been few studies on CIPKs in Dimocarpus longan Lour (D. longan). In this study we identified eight putative CIPKs in D. longan (DlCIPKs) according to RNA-seq data. The physicochemical properties, subcellular localization, conserved motifs, phylogenetic relationships, glycosylation and phosphorylation sites, and gene ontology annotation were analyzed using bioinformatics tools. The tissue-specific and heat-stress-responsive expressions were systematically investigated as well. Ten motifs widely maintained by DlCIPKs …

Determination Of Optimum Harvest Date For Winter Malting Quality Barley In Northwest Arkansas, Paul Wolf, David Moon, Richard Esten Mason
Determination Of Optimum Harvest Date For Winter Malting Quality Barley In Northwest Arkansas, Paul Wolf, David Moon, Richard Esten Mason
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Due to the strict quality requirements, only 10% of worldwide barley is used for malting, though malting quality barley comes with a price increase of up to 50% or greater. With the craft brewery industry growing in Northwest Arkansas there is a growing demand for locally sourced malt quality barley. However, data are lacking regarding production practices for barley in Arkansas. The optimal harvest date for malting quality barley is at physiological maturity. This is because many of the malting traits (such as germination energy) decline as harvest is delayed, which make it difficult to meet the criteria for malting …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Flowers of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) have been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine because of their ability to improve cerebral blood flow. The major active ingredients in safflower are flavonoids. To date, few flavonoid biosynthesis genes have been cloned from this species. In our previous research, four isoform chalcone isomerase genes were screened. In this study, a new chalcone isomerase gene (designated as CtCHI-N) was cloned from a safflower cDNA library. A 696-bp cDNA for CtCHI-N was cloned, and its sequence was subsequently analyzed. The recombinant protein was successfully expressed in a prokaryotic expression system, and the expression of …

Moderate Level Of Toxic Boron Causes Differential Regulation Of Micrornas Related To Jasmonate And Ethylene Metabolisms In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Doğa Seli̇n Kayihan, Ceyhun Kayihan, Yelda Özden Çi̇ftçi̇
Turkish Journal of Botany
Earlier our colleagues detected that the genes related to jasmonate (JA), ethylene, and cell wall modification were significantly regulated under boron (B) toxicity in wheat. Determination of regulation mechanisms of these novel genes under B toxicity is very important in Arabidopsis thaliana as a model plant. As key regulators, the microRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level and respond to numerous abiotic stresses in plants. In this study, expression levels of miRNAs such as miR159, miR172, miR319, and miR394 targeting JA and ethylene-related transcription factors and also miR397 targeting laccase were determined in Arabidopsis thaliana under toxic B …
Effects Of Salicylic Acid And Heat Acclimation On Thermotolerance And Withanolide Accumulation Under High Temperature Stress In The Cape Gooseberry (Physalisperuviana L.), Günce Şahi̇n
Turkish Journal of Botany
The adverse effects of high temperature stress can be alleviated by thermotolerance induced by exogenous application of plant growth regulators or by gradual application of temperature stress. Physalis peruviana L., commonly known as the Cape gooseberry, is a source of a variety of phytocompounds such as withanolides (withanone, withaferin A, and withanolide A). These withanolides are potentially high-value drug candidates because of their various pharmacological properties. The production of withanolides via traditional agriculture is commercially inadequate. In the present study, elicitation strategies were employed to improve the crop's thermotolerance and accumulation of withanolides. For these purposes, the effects of heat …

Natural And Anthropic Forest Fragments Have Distinct Ecological Behavior Due To Their Different Origin And Landscape Context, Cleber Souza, Polyanne Coelho, Paola Ferreira Santos, Gisele Cristina De Oliveira Menino, Jean Morel, Aline Moreira, Rubens Manoel Dos Santos
Turkish Journal of Botany
We tested the hypothesis that plant populations in natural fragments have distinct ecological behavior in relation to anthropic fragments. We selected the species Myrcia splendens (SW.) DC. in 2 forest fragments located in southeastern Brazil that present different origins and landscape contexts. The natural fragment originates from landscape relief variations and is inserted in a native grassland matrix, while the anthropic fragment originates from fragmentation due to area conversion and is inserted in an agricultural matrix. We established transects covering an area from one border to the other in each fragment, and we established subunits of 400 m2 within them. …

Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a serious factor restricting crop productivity in acid soil, and Al is the major cause of phytotoxicity. However, the role of Al toxicity in interprimer binding site (iPBS) polymorphism, genomic instability, and DNA methylation has not been fully investigated. In the current study, the effects of different Al concentrations on iPBS polymorphism, genomic instability, and DNA methylation were investigated in seedlings of three wheat cultivars: Haymana 79, Kılçıksız, and Bezostaja 1. A higher aluminum concentration increased the polymorphism rate of the iPBS profile, but decreased genomic template stability in all cultivars . A higher Al concentration …
