The Challenge Of A Siberian Bluegrass (Poa) Phylogeny, Marina V. Olonova
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
In Siberia, the bluegrass genus (Poa) comprises 43 species and 61 subspecies in 12 sections. Diverse modes of speciation, including polyploidy and hybridization, have led to reticulate evolution and adaptive radiation. Cladistic methods that ignore hybridization and reticulate evolution may not be appropriate for morphological data. The number of morphological characters suitable for bluegrass analysis is limited, a majority does not have clear adaptive significance, and the character states cannot be readily polarized, rendering phylogenetic reconstruction very difficult in this group. Other methods of estimating phylogenetic relationships should be used to test hypotheses about relationships and hybridization. Biochemical …

Vascular Plants Of The High Sierra San Pedro Mártir, Baja California, Mexico: An Annotated Checklist, Robert F. Thorne, Reid V. Moran, Richard A. Minnich

The Sierra San Pedro Mártir (SSPM) is the highest mountain range in Baja California, Mexico, the summit of Picacho del Diablo peak attaining 3095 meters. An annotated checklist describes the vascular flora of the SSPM high country, defined here as above 1800 m. It comprises almost 500 species in 251 genera and 78 families. The high country is dominated by coniferous forest species known from montane California and Arizona whose southern ranges terminate in the SSPM. The annotated checklist identifies 453 species in 236 genera as indigenous, of which 23 species and one variety are endemic to the SSPM. Over …

Helianthus inexpectatus is described as a new species from the Newhall Ranch of northern Los Angeles County, California. It is a tetraploid (2n = 68) perennial that is morphologically similar to--—and intermediate in some characters between--—the diploid H. nuttallii and the hexaploid H. californicus.

Nomenclatural Changes For Some Grasses In California And The Muhlenbergia Clade (Poaceae), J. Travis Columbus, James P. Smith Jr.

New combinations and names are here validated for ten grass (Poaceae) taxa in California for the forthcoming revision of The Jepson Manual. In addition, guided by recent molecular phylogenetic studies, ten non-California grass species are here transferred to Muhlenbergia (Chloridoideae: Cynodonteae) to achieve monophyly of the genus. Lolium, long known to be phylogenetically nested within Festuca, is here subsumed into Festuca, and the circumscription of Stipa is expanded to include all Stipeae (native and non-native) in California. In Stipeae, most currently recognized genera are not monophyletic. Attaining monophyly while bearing in mind identification for persons not expert …

A brief account on the morphology and ecology of the monotypic genus Moltkiopsis I.M.Johnst. (Boraginaceae) is given. An overview of the genus with notes on heterostyly, communities, soil, regeneration, vernacular names, etc. is presented. Variations present in some of the populations of Moltkiopsis ciliata (Forssk.) I.M.Johnst., particularly in the floral parts, are also explained in detail.

Enhanced Adventitious Shoot Regeneration From Aerial Stem Explants Of Ginger Using Tdz And Its Histological Studies, Adinkudikuyyal Lincy, Bhaskaran Sasikumar

A protocol for direct plantlet regeneration from aerial stem explants of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) has been developed. Adventitious shoots and roots were regenerated from in planta aerial stem explants of 2 ginger varieties viz. var. 'Jamaica' and var. 'Varada'. Maximum shoot and root regeneration were observed in the cultures containing TDZ and IBA (1:1; 1:0.1 mg L-1) in both varieties. Cultures containing TDZ alone showed poor shoot and root formation. Histological studies revealed that the shoot initials originated from the primary thickening meristem and apical meristem, while the root primordial originated from the primary thickening meristem present in the …

The Genotoxic Potential Of Two Heavy Metals In Inbred Lines Of Maize (Zea Mays L.), Girjesh Kumar, Prashant Kumar Rai

The genotoxic effects of 2 heavy metals (mercury chloride and cadmium chloride) on the gametic cells of 6 inbred lines of maize were tested in terms of cytological abnormalities. Meiosis was normal under control conditions. During the treatments with mercury and cadmium there was a concentration-dependent increase in meiotic abnormalities in all the inbred lines. A wide spectrum of chromosomal aberrations in the treated sets was stickiness, followed by laggards, bridges, scattering, precocious movement, fragments, etc. Maximum chromosomal anomalies were observed in inbred line CM-142 in both the treatment sets of heavy metals. Compared to CdCl_2, HgCl_2 induced more chromosomal …

Michauxia nuda A.DC. (Campanulaceae) is recorded for the first time (C8 Siirt province) from Turkey. The diagnostic characters of M. nuda are described and its habitat and conservation status are indicated. Besides, it is illustrated, and a distribution map is presented. Notes on collecting number of type specimen of this species are provided.

The Lower Cheliff plain is among the largest salted soils in north-western Algeria. In order to establish the relationships between the main soil factors and plant species in this stressed ecosystem, 133 relevés related to soil and vegetation were realized. Soil variables measured included electrical conductivity and calcium carbonate. The 133 relevés were arranged in clusters using k-means classification. The similarity analysis used to examine the variation in vegetation assemblage structure showed significant differences in taxonomical composition among groups of relevés. Nucellar epidermal cells in the micropylar region of Scilla autumnalis L. differentiate into a nucellar cap. It secretes a PAS-positive exudate filling the micropyle. A group of cells at the chalazal end of the nucellus forms a hypostase. Close to the antipodals, the hypostase cells contain abundant starch grains, suggesting a function as a storage tissue. Another ovular structure is the obturator. It secretes an exudate that stains deeply with PAS reaction, and it takes a role in directing the growth of pollen tubes toward the micropyle. This study was conducted to investigate foliar nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics, nitrogen and phosphorus resorption, and some leaf traits (i.e. SLA=specific leaf area) in some coastal salt marsh plants located in northern Turkey. The study area is located on the east bank of the Kızılırmak River in the central Black Sea Region. There were statistically significant differences among months (from June to October) in terms of SLA in all species except for Artemisia santonicum. Several species in the genus Peperomia Ruiz & Pav. have giant chloroplasts in the palisade parenchyma of their leaves. Because of this unique feature, Peperomia metallica L. Linden & Rodigas has become a valuable model plant for studying plastid biology. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars (cvs) (Göynük 98, Karacaşehir 90, Şehirali 90, ES 855, and Yunus 90) were subjected to drought stress in order to assess the levels of drought tolerance through the analysis of growth parameters, leaf water potential (\psi_{leaf}), stomatal conductance (g_s), chlorophyll (chl) content, and lipid peroxidation. Significant differences were recorded among cultivars in most traits. Yunus 90 was identified as the most tolerant, and Karacaşehir 90 was the most sensitive. Furthermore, the changes in antioxidant enzyme activities, H_2O_2 content, and Photosystem II were investigated under drought stress, where Antioxidant enzyme activities increased while H_2O_2 contents …

High Frequency Plant Production Via Shoot Organogenesis And Somatic Embryogenesis From Callus In Tylophora Indica, An Endangered Plant Species, Aastha Sahai, Anwar Shahzad, Mohammad Anis

An efficient and reproducible protocol has been developed for the in vitro production of an endangered medicinal climber Tylophora indica (Burm.f.) Merr. via leaf explants. Different types of calli produced on benzyladenine (BA) and thidiazuron (TDZ) supplemented Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium were selected for shoot induction and somatic embryogenesis studies. Calli when transferred from BA (5 µM) and TDZ (2.5 µM) to MS medium containing BA (5 µM) resulted in high frequency shoot induction (26.8 ± 0.97 shoots/culture) along with somatic embryogenesis (10.20 ± 0.37 embryoids/culture) up to 3 subculture passages. The effect of diethyl sulphate (DES) and sodium azide (SA) was studied on the meiotic behaviour of Vicia faba L. var. major in the M1 generation. Five concentrations of SA (0.01%, 0.02%, 0.03%, 0.04%, and 0.05%) were combined with DES (0.02%) to study the synergistic and antagonistic effects of these 2 mutagens. A dose-dependent increase in chromosomal aberrations was recorded in populations treated with both the mutagens individually and their combination doses. The main chromosomal aberrations were stickiness, precocious separations, univalents, multivalents, laggards, unequal separations of chromosomes, micronuclei, disturbed polarity, multinucleate condition, and cytomixis. Silene bayburtensis Hamzaoğlu & Aksoy sp. nov. is described as a new species from Bayburt province (Turkey). The specimen was collected on a calcareous steppe, in 2 localities, at an altitude between 1700 and 1750 m. The new species is similar to Silene pharnaceifolia Fenzl. The differences between the species are discussed.

Scorzonera ketzkhovelii Grossh. (Asteraceae) was recently collected from Yusufeli, Artvin (north-east Anatolia) and it has been reported as a new species record for the flora of Turkey. It is described and illustrated. In addition, its karyological features and pollen morphology are given.

Juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) is an allelochemical responsible for walnut allelopathy. The effects of gibberellic acid (GA_{3}) and kinetin (KIN) on overcoming the effects of juglone stress on seed germination and seedling growth were investigated in barley, wheat, cucumber, alfalfa, and tomato. Seeds pre-treated with plant growth regulators were used to test their effects on the alleviation of juglone stress. It was observed that seed germination in tomato and wheat was inhibited by juglone and that the plant growth regulators alleviated it significantly. Morphological And Anatomical Studies Of Annual Taxa Of Sideritis L. (Lamiaceae), With Notes On Chorology In Turkey, Ayşegül Güvenç, Hayri̇ Duman

Sideritis L. (Lamiaceae) includes approximately 150 species of annual and perennial plants distributed mainly in the Mediterranean region. In Turkey, 44 species (55 taxa) are native. Three of these species (5 taxa) are annual and these taxa are included in Burgsdorfia and Hesiodia sections. This study was undertaken to investigate the morphological and anatomical properties of 5 annual taxa of Sideritis. Full descriptions and illustrations of these taxa are given, along with some additional information regarding their ecology and phytogeography. The anatomy of the leaf blade, midrib, and stem of the taxa are described and illustrated.
