A Comparative Population Study Of Small Vertebrates In The Uranium Areas Of The Upper Colorado River Basin Of Utah, Wilmer W. Tanner May 1965

A Comparative Population Study Of Small Vertebrates In The Uranium Areas Of The Upper Colorado River Basin Of Utah, Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

This paper constitutes a terminal report to the United States Atomic Energy Commission for contract AT(11-1)819. It provides not only a faunistic and floristic study of areas having a high and low surface radiation, but also includes a consideration of their general ecology. Major emphasis is placed on the variation of the external characteristics of the small vertebrates of these areas with a statistical analysis of those characters examined in the lizards. The study was conducted in southeastern Utah (Tanner 1963, see map) from October 1959 through 1964, and was conducted as a test of the variation effects of natural …

Observations On The Biology, Anatomy, And Morphology Of Otobius Lagophilus Cooley And Kohls, C. Selby Herring, D Elden Beck Feb 1965

Observations On The Biology, Anatomy, And Morphology Of Otobius Lagophilus Cooley And Kohls, C. Selby Herring, D Elden Beck

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The principal objective of this study is to bring up to date information on geographic distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host-parasite relationship of O. lagophilus in western North America. Notes on life history and disease transmission potential are included.

Data and information were obtained from three sources: (1) natural history collections and field records at Brigham Young University over the past twenty years; (2) the Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Hamilton, Montana; and (3) published literature.

All available collection records are presented in a table from which information on geographic distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host-parasite relationship was extracted. O. lagophilus is known …

Tenebrionidae Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site, Vasco M. Tanner, Willis A. Packham Feb 1965

Tenebrionidae Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site, Vasco M. Tanner, Willis A. Packham

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The intent of this study conducted over a period of three years was to ( 1 ) provide descriptions of the species of tenebrionids found at the Nevada Test Site, (2) determine their relative abundance, (3) determine their seasonal activity, and (4) ascertain their plant community relationships.

A total of 14,650 beetles representing 46 kinds of tenebrionids was collected with sunken can traps, by hand, and ultra-violet light. Collections were made at regular intervals in the following plant communities: Larrea-Franseria, Lycium, Atriplex-Kochia, Grayia-Lycium (disturbed and undisturbed areas), Salsola, Coleogyne, Pinyon-Juniper, and Mixed.

The data obtained from this study indicate that …

Distribution Of Foliar Applied P-32 From The Leaves Of Soybean At Various Ages, George E. Ahlgren, Theodore W. Sudia Jan 1965

Distribution Of Foliar Applied P-32 From The Leaves Of Soybean At Various Ages, George E. Ahlgren, Theodore W. Sudia

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Transport patterns of phosphorus-32 from the cotyledons, primary leaves and the first five trifoliate leaves of soybean were determined at various ages of these organs. The transport patterns studied indicate the same general pattern for each leaf. There is initially a bidirectional movement from the leaf that increases in its upward component as the leaf becomes older, followed by a sharp drop in the upward component and P'" transport becoming essentially unidirectional downward in the stem. At fruit development, phosphorus-32 transport becomes quite specific for fruit at the axil of a particular leaf. Contiguity to sites of high metabolic activity …

Cytoplasmic Male Sterility And Intergrafts Between Lycopersicon Esculentum And Solanum Pennellii Corr., W. R. Andersen Jan 1965

Cytoplasmic Male Sterility And Intergrafts Between Lycopersicon Esculentum And Solanum Pennellii Corr., W. R. Andersen

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Attempts to transmit cytoplasmic male sterility through intergrafts between Lycopersicon esculenfum and Solanum pennellii have been unsuccessful. This implies that in these materials, the factor conditioning cytoplasmic male sterility is noninfective. The results of this study and other similar studies by other workers suggest the possibility that grafting might be used as a tool in the classification of cytoplasmic factors affecting mole sterility in plants.

The Wild Celery Of Christmas Lake, Hibbert Hill Jan 1965

The Wild Celery Of Christmas Lake, Hibbert Hill

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The growth and reproduction of Vallisneria as seen and photographed below water in Christmas Lake, Hennepin County, Minnesota, is described. The functions of the water surface film, of wave energy, and of the coiled stem of the pistillate flower, in fertilization is discussed. It is found that many of the plants grow in such depths that fertilization is impossible.
