Is Orthoptera Abundance And Distribution Across A Small Grassland Area Affected By Plant Biomass, Plant Species Richness, And Plant Quality?, Caitlin Falcone

The choice of a specific microhabitat represents a compromise among a number of different factors organisms use to monitor habitat suitability. Grassland vegetation structure can vary widely along environmental gradients over a relatively small area. This vegetation structure can have a large influence on habitat selection by grasshoppers (Orthoptera). However, it is not clear which vegetation characteristics are most important in determining grasshopper abundance. We found that plant biomass, plant species richness, and plant quality all have an effect on grasshopper abundance and distribution. We observe that these affects vary both within and among the two years of data collection. …

Gives an overview of research in Mongolia that was conducted by botanists from the University of Halle in cooperation with their Mongolian colleagues. A summary was compiled of expeditions and related activities covering more than 40 years of cooperation between 1962 and 2006, including a list of the respective participants, the duration of travel, the areas of Mongolia visited, the main aims, and principal publications.

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Approximately three and one-third million acres of native prairie are harvested annually in Nebraska for hay. In the four-year period 1948-1951, the State ranked first in wild hay production with an average yield of more than two and one-quarter million tons per year. This crop is an important natural resource in Nebraska's livestock industry. Studies were initiated in 1945 to determine the effects of time of cutting on the yield and feeding value of prairie hay in southeastern Nebraska. Twenty-four native grasses that are the most important and most generally distributed in Nebraska are described and illustrated in this circular. Information concerning their distribution and economic value is given. Anyone interested in learning to identify the common native grasses should be able to do so by comparing plant specimens with the illustrations and descriptions herein presented. The work of identifying grasses may seem technical and limited only to botanists or those with similar training. Nearly anyone, however, can learn to identify many of the native grasses if willing to spend a little time and effort.

Rydberg (1860–1931) was born Sweden and emigrated to the United States in 1882, first to mining camps in upper Michigan and eventually to Wahoo, in Saunders County, Nebraska, where he taught mathematics from 1884 to 1893 at now defunct Luther Academy.
