Combining Environmental History And Soil Phytolith Analysis At The City Of Rocks National Reserve: Developing New Methods In Historical Ecology, Lesley Morris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Historical ecology is an emerging and interdisciplinary field that seeks to explain the changes in ecosystems over time through a synthesis of information derived from human records and biological data. The methods in historical ecology cover a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. However, methods for the more recent past (about 200 years) are largely limited to the human archive and dendrochronological evidence which can be subject to human bias, limited in spatial extent or not appropriate for non-forested systems. There is a need to explore new methods by which biological data can be used to understand historic vegetation …
Application And Optimization Of Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer (Bret) For Real Time Detection Of Protein-Protein Interactions In Transgenic Arabidopsis As Well As Structure-Based Functional Studies On The Active Site Of Coelenterazine-Dependent Luciferase From Renilla And Its Improvement By Protein Engineering, Jongchan Woo
Doctoral Dissertations
Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) is a biological phenomenon in some marine organisms such as Renilla reniformis and Aequorea victoria. In BRET, resonance energy from decarboxylation of coelenterazine, a substrate of Renilla luciferase (RLUC), is transferred to its acceptor such as green fluorescent protein (GFP) or yellow fluorescent protein (YFP), dependent on a distance of around 5 nm between the energy donor (RLUC) and its acceptor. The activation of the energy acceptor results in a spectral change in luminescence emission. The BRET system allows investigation of in vivo protein-protein interactions in real time. This was demonstrated with two heterodimeric …
Reestablishing The Juneberry On The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation: Cultural, Horticultural, And Educational Connections, Kerry E. Hartman
Reestablishing The Juneberry On The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation: Cultural, Horticultural, And Educational Connections, Kerry E. Hartman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tribal people of the Northern Great Plains have utilized plants for centuries. Amelanchier anifolia (Juneberries/Serviceberries) historically played an important part in the diet and culture of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) Tribal Nations. Research conducted as part of this study into historical and contemporary uses of the Juneberry by MHA Tribal Members indicated extensive historical use and a high interest in Juneberry reestablishment for cultural, nutritional, and economic reasons. Previous research on Juneberries has investigated factors including state of dormancy, propagation method, transplant type, and mulch type. Another purpose of this study was to elucidate the impact of presence …
Insertion Of The Enzyme Cyclopropane Fatty Acid Synthase Into Plastids Through Agrobacterium Mediated Transformation, Jason L. Rush
Insertion Of The Enzyme Cyclopropane Fatty Acid Synthase Into Plastids Through Agrobacterium Mediated Transformation, Jason L. Rush
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Under natural conditions, Agrobacterium is a plant pathogen that infects plants by inserting genes into the plant's genome that are desirable to the bacterium itself. A tumor is then formed and the infected plant tissue makes molecules that the bacterium uses as food.

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Kalanchoe pinnatum (syn. Bryophyllum pinnatum) is a succulent plant that is notable for developing small plantlets on the outer edges of its leaves, when its leaves are detached (Kulka 2006). These plantlets eventually drop off and root, which is a unique way for the plant to asexually reproduce. In most other plants, leaves exhibit determinate growth, meaning once they reach their maturity, they do not continue to grow.

Microspore Wall Morphogenesis And Orbicule Ultrastructure Of Isoetes, Khalid Alarid
Microspore Wall Morphogenesis And Orbicule Ultrastructure Of Isoetes, Khalid Alarid
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The microspore wall morphogenesis and orbicule ultrastructure of Isoetes were studied using electron microscopy. Microspore wall morphogenesis in five species of Isoetes (I. appalachiana, I. engelmannii, I. hyemalis, I. piedmontana, and an undescribed species from York Co., VA, USA) was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Results show that they generally have the same developmental stages in terms of microspore wall morphogenesis. The mature microspore wall consisted of four layers: perispore, paraexospore, exospore and endospore. Paraexospore formation began during the tetrad stage. The exospore was then formed between the paraexospore and the plasma membrane. During the free spore …
