Earthworm And Soil Data For Ottawa National Forest, Blair Orr
Earthworm And Soil Data For Ottawa National Forest, Blair Orr
Michigan Tech Research Data
Two types of analysis were run.
I. Probability of finding L. terrestris in habitat types of the Ottawa National Forests.
Abstract: Parts of the Ottawa National Forest (ONF) provide suitable habitat for invasive earthworms. Extensive earthworm invasion is a relatively recent event on the ONF and this study captures the current state of the earthworm invasion through a four-stage invasive species distribution model (iSDM). The random distribution of earthworms indicates early colonization by earthworms which is moderated by habitat (forest type, soil group, and drainage class). CART modeling was used to determine probability of earthworm invasion. The CART model had …

Humans are changing the Earth's surface at an accelerating pace, with significant consequences for ecosystems and their biodiversity. Landscape transformation has far-reaching implications including reduced net primary production (NPP) available to support ecosystems, reduced energy supplies to consumers, and disruption of ecosystem services such as carbon storage. Anthropogenic activities have reduced global NPP available to terrestrial ecosystems by nearly 25%, but the loss of NPP from wetland ecosystems is unknown. We used a simple approach to estimate aquatic NPP from measured habitat areas and habitat-specific areal productivity in the largest wetland complex on the USA west coast, comparing historical and …

Reptiles, like other vertebrates, rely on immunity to defend themselves from infection. The energetic cost of an immune response is liable to scale with infection severity, prompting constraints on other selfmaintenance traits if immune prioritization exceeds energy budget. In this study, adult male side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) were injected with saline (control) or high (20 μg g−1 body mass) or low (10 μg g−1 body mass) concentrations of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to simulate bacterial infections of discrete severities. The costs and consequences of the immune response were assessed through comparisons of change in resting metabolic rate (RMR), energy metabolites (glucose, glycerol, …

Prior literature has indicated that toxic metal exposure can alter the circadian clock rhythm and lead to biological and physiological dysfunction. The purpose of this research was to study the impact of chronic exposure to lead on the circadian rhythm patterns of Drosophila Melanogaster. Fly locomotive activity was used as a measure of strength of the circadian rhythm after exposure to lead. It was hypothesized that higher concentrations of lead would have a greater impact on the circadian locomotor activity patterns of exposed Drosophila, specifically on the transition periods between “Morning” and “Evening.” Young adult male flies(1-3 days post-eclosion) were …

Co-Occurrence Of In-Stream Nitrogen Fixation And Denitrification Across A Nitrogen Gradient In A Western U.S. Watershed, 2015 - 2016, Erin K. Eberhard, Amy Marcarelli, Colden V. Baxter
Michigan Tech Publications
This data was collected as part of the NSF CAREER Grant DEB 14-51919 to Amy Marcarelli to evaluate if nitrogen fixation and denitrification co-occur in streams across a gradient of nitrate concentrations. This data was collected during summer 2015 and 2016 in the Portneuf River watershed near Pocatello, ID. In summer 2015, rates of nitrogen fixation were only measured on rock substrate and denitrification only on sediment substrate. In summer 2016, both process rates were measured on both rock and sediment substrate to more accurately capture variation in rates.

Homology Of A Maturase To The Heart Of The Nuclear Spliceosome, Isabella Becker
Homology Of A Maturase To The Heart Of The Nuclear Spliceosome, Isabella Becker
Undergraduate Research Competition
Structural and biochemical evidence links group II introns as evolutionary precursors of nuclear introns. The spliceosome binds and excises nuclear introns. Maturases are prokaryotic enzymes that aid group II intron excision. The evolutionary ties between group II introns and nuclear introns suggest a possible link between maturases and the nuclear spliceosome. Structural analysis of Prp8, a core enzyme of the nuclear spliceosome has demonstrated this link and revealed similarity to prokaryotic maturases. Maturase K (MatK) is a chloroplast group II intron maturase. Unlike prokaryotic maturases, MatK binds to multiple intron substrates suggesting possible evolution akin to the nuclear spliceosome machinery. …
