Exogenously Sourced γ-Irradiated Chitosan-Mediated Regulation Of Growth, Physiology, Quality Attributes And Yield In Mentha Piperita L., Bilal Ahmad, Mohammad Masroor Akhtar Khan, Hassan Jaleel, Yawar Sadiq, Asfia Shabbir, Moin Uddin
Turkish Journal of Biology
In view of the increasing demand for essential oils from medicinal and aromatic plants, the application of irradiated polysaccharides like chitosan is a promising option. A pot experiment was performed to study the influence of various concentrations of irradiated chitosan (ICN) on growth, physiological, and yield parameters of Mentha piperita L., a plant with considerable pharmaceutical importance. The treatments were foliar spray of deionized water only (control), foliar spray of unirradiated chitosan (40 mg L-1), and ICN at 40, 80, 120, and 160 mg L-1. Among these, 80 mg L-1 ICN (treatment 4) proved to be the best for most …
Regulation Of Functional Activities And Essential Oil Production In Vetiveria Zizanioides L. Nash After γ-Irradiated Sodium Alginate Elicitation, Asfia Shabbir, Mohammad Masroor Akhtar Khan, Yawar Sadiq, Hassan Jaleel, Bilal Ahmad, Moin Uddin
Regulation Of Functional Activities And Essential Oil Production In Vetiveria Zizanioides L. Nash After γ-Irradiated Sodium Alginate Elicitation, Asfia Shabbir, Mohammad Masroor Akhtar Khan, Yawar Sadiq, Hassan Jaleel, Bilal Ahmad, Moin Uddin
Turkish Journal of Biology
Upon irradiation, marine polysaccharides undergo depolymerization, leading to formation of oligosaccharides that elicit various biological activities in plants. Taking a step further on the previously established growth-promoting activity of irradiated sodium alginate (ISA), structural rearrangements in ISA were analyzed using complementary techniques to develop an understanding of the structure-property relationship. The essential oil (EO) of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides L. Nash) immensely benefits the perfumery industry, proving itself as an economically important crop. A pot experiment was designed to test the effect of water-soluble ISA fractions on the growth, physiology, and EO production of vetiver. The structural characterization of radiation-induced sodium …

Aerial parts of Daphne pontica were collected from Ilgaz-Çankırı, and D. oleoides subsp. oleoides was collected from 2 different localities (Ayrancı-Karaman and Ilgaz-Çankırı) in Turkey. The samples were subjected to hydrodistillation and microdistillation. The resulting volatile samples were analyzed both by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), respectively. The main components for D. pontica were identified as hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (8.6%), carvacrol (8.5%), dihydroedulane II (4.7%), (E)-geranyl acetone (4.6%), and thymol (4.5%), while nonacosane (42.5% and 27.2%), hexadecanoic acid (24.4% and 20.0%), phytol (12.3%), and carvacrol (5.0%) were identified as the main components of D. oleoides subsp. oleoides obtained …
