A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of The Ants On The Campus Of The University Of New Mexico, Tad S. Clements

This thesis attempts to indicate some of the ways in which the ants of the campus of the University of New Mexico affect man within the small area of the campus. However, my purpose of doing the study has not been strictly limited by practical considerations. Until now, no systematic study has been made of the Formicidae of the University of New Mexico Campus. Since the habitats produced artificially by man on the University of New Mexico Campus have resulted in favoring certain species of ants not found by the writer elsewhere in the region, the present study is valuable.

The purpose of this investigation was:

1) to study the d-amino acid oxidase activity in the tumorous and nontumorous liver areas of animals fed different azo dyes;

2) to determine whether any decrease in enzyme activity was due to the lack of apoenzyme, its coenzyme or both;

3) to observe the effect of additional dietary riboflavin upon liver and tumor d-amino acid oxidase activity in animals bearing hepatomas in an effort to determine whether the vitamin could still be utilized in these tissues;

4) to compare succinoxidase activity in the different livers and hepatomas since this enzyme system is also …

The study of bacterial nutrition is fundamental to an understanding of the physiological aspects of microorganisms. The advances made in biochemical research during the past few decades have permitted the employment of synthetic media for a large number of microorganisms previously able to grow only on complex, ill-defined media. In turn, microorganisma have become a valuable tool of the biochemist for the assay of vitamins and growth factors. These combined efforts of the biochemist and the microbiologist have advanced the entire field of physiology applicable to all organisms.

The purpose of the present study is to obtain information relative to the taxonomy, geographical distribution, and ecology of the pseudoscorpions of the Mississippi River drainage basin, with the exception of areas of headwater tributary streams. The present study is geographically restricted to the area bounded on the west by North Dakota, Kansas, and Oklahoma and on the east by Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and ranges from the Canadian border on the north to the Gulf of Mexico on the south.

An attempt has been made to collect, identify, and classify all the four tribes Agrostideae, Andropogoneae, Aveneae, and Chlorideae within the confines of Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Specimens have been examined from the herbarium of the University of New Mexico, the regional Forest Service herbarium, and the regional Soil Conservation Service herbarium, all located in Albuquerque. Species reported from Bernalillo County in these herbaria and unobserved by the author have been included in the thesis.

Relation Between Specific Ionization Of Various Radiations And Their Relative Biological Effectiveness In Mammalian Systems, John E. Furchner

The relative biological effectiveness of several radiations of differing specific ionizations was determined. The radiation effect studied was impairment of bone marrow function, and the biological test system used was the depression of Fe59 uptake by the red blood cells of male Sprague-Dawley rats. The effectiveness of the mixed radiations in the thermal column of a homogeneous reactor was compared with 250-KVP X radiation, and the effect of the beta particles of tritium was compared with that of Co60 gamma rays. The effect of the alpha particles of Pu and Ra on bone marrow function was also determined.
