Vital Rates And Population Demographics In Declining And Stable Watersnake Populations, John H. Roe, Omar Attum, Bruce A. Kingsbury Ph.D. Jan 2015

Vital Rates And Population Demographics In Declining And Stable Watersnake Populations, John H. Roe, Omar Attum, Bruce A. Kingsbury Ph.D.

Bruce A Kingsbury Ph.D.

many snake populations have experienced significant declines, including the copper-bellied Watersnake (nerodia erythrogaster neglecta), a species listed as threatened under the federal endangered species act. here, we assess aspects of population biology and vital rates in n. e. neglecta to help elucidate potential mechanisms of their decline and inform more targeted recovery efforts. We use the common Watersnake (nerodia sipedon sipedon) as a benchmark for comparison. survey results indicate that the n. e. neglecta population may have experienced a 70% decline in abundance from 2001– 2006, whereas the n. s. sipedon population remained relatively stable. annual survivorship rates did not …

Retention Rate Of Hard-Released Translocated Egyptian Tortoises Testudo Kleinmanni, Bruce Kingsbury, Omar Attum, Wissam Farag, Sherif Baha El Din Jan 2015

Retention Rate Of Hard-Released Translocated Egyptian Tortoises Testudo Kleinmanni, Bruce Kingsbury, Omar Attum, Wissam Farag, Sherif Baha El Din

Bruce A Kingsbury Ph.D.

We examined the suitability of using translocations as a method to create a new population of Egyptian tortoises Testudo kleinmanni in an area where the species historically occurred. We released 109 tortoises, comprising 57 males, 48 females and 4 juveniles. Dispersal from the release site influenced survival and retention rate, i.e. the proportion of individual tortoises found after the original release. The number of times a tortoise was recaptured decreased as the minimum distance at which it was found from the release site increased. In addition, live tortoises were significantly more likely to be found at shorter minimum distances from …

Managed Areas As Ecological Traps For Snakes In An Exotic Plant-Invaded Landscape, Evin Carter, Bruce Kingsbury

Bruce A Kingsbury Ph.D.

Areas such as wildlife refuges or parks offer important opportunities for the protection of imperiled wildlife. Unfortunately, conflicting practices and objectives with respect to natural resource management and general property management can potentially lead to negative outcomes such as the decline or extirpation local flora or fauna. Here, we provide direct evidence of the impacts of property management and restoration activities on a population of Northern Copperheads ( Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen ) in southern Indiana, showing that several managed habitats can and do attract Northern Copperheads and simultaneously place them at greater risk of injury and/or mortality. At the same …

The Spatial Ecology Of The Eastern Massasauga (Sistrurus C. Catenatus) In Northern Michigan, Bruce Kingsbury, Brett Degregorio, Jennifer Manning, Nicholas Bieser

Bruce A Kingsbury Ph.D.

We investigated the spatial ecology of the eastern massasauga (Sistrurus c. catenatus) at a study site unique in that it was near the northern extent of the species' geographic range and had a sandy substrate and extensive mixed coniferous forest. Forty-six individuals were radiotracked for at least one complete season between 2002 and 2004 or 2006 and 2007. Males had larger home ranges and core areas, range lengths, and movement rates than nongravid females, which in turn had larger movement parameters than those of gravid females. Movement rates and distances were not constant throughout the activity season, with …

Impacts Of Invasive Plants On Resource Selection And Thermoregulation By A North American Pitviper (Agkistrodon Contortrix Mokasen), Evin Carter, Bruce Kingsbury Jan 2015

Impacts Of Invasive Plants On Resource Selection And Thermoregulation By A North American Pitviper (Agkistrodon Contortrix Mokasen), Evin Carter, Bruce Kingsbury

Bruce A Kingsbury Ph.D.

Invasive plants have been identified as a potential factor in the decline of many forms of wildlife. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of clear evidence regarding causative mechanisms. We therefore investigated the effects of nonnative invasive plants on resource selection and thermoregulation by 22 radio-tagged Northern Copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen) in southern Indiana. Copperheads exhibited clear avoidance of most invasive plant species at multiple spatial scales, with exotic shrubs having the greatest influence on copperhead habitat selection. Avoidance appears to be at least partially attributable to limited thermoregulatory opportunities within exotic plant-dominated habitats relative to native habitats, with exotic shrub …

The Effects Of Prescribed Fire On A Population Of Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina) In Southwest Michigan, Chris Woodley, Bruce A. Kingsbury Ph.D.

Bruce A Kingsbury Ph.D.

We report here on previous and ongoing efforts to understand how prescribed fires affect a population of Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina) in Southwest Michigan. Work with the animals began in 2007, and a larger proportion of animals we have found have burn injuries. Those animals which are burned show varying degrees of resilience to their injuries with some animals succumbing quickly and dying over a short period of time while others with extensive injuries are able to recover over several years. This resilience to fire may be an adaptation in areas that were subject to historical natural fires, but …

No Place Like Home: An Experimental Comparison Of Reintroduction Strategies Using Snakes, Bruce Kingsbury, John Roe, Michael Frank, Scott Gibson, Omar Attum Jan 2015

No Place Like Home: An Experimental Comparison Of Reintroduction Strategies Using Snakes, Bruce Kingsbury, John Roe, Michael Frank, Scott Gibson, Omar Attum

Bruce A Kingsbury Ph.D.

1.  The practice of deliberately moving animals from one site to another for conservation is increasing as a tool to re-establish extirpated populations. Resource managers are faced with developing strategies for reintroduction attempts, but often lack experimentally derived evidence upon which to base decisions. 2. Using the northern water snake Nerodia sipedon sipedon in the USA, we compared the behaviour and performance of resident snakes with that of individuals translocated directly from the wild to a nearby nature reserve or reared in captivity prior to translocation. 3.  Both translocated groups had low survivorship relative to resident snakes, but the proximal …
