In Vitro Antimicrobial Activity Of Salvadora Persica L. Extracts Against Some Isolated Oral Pathogens In Iraq, Firas A. Al-Bayati, Khudir D. Sulaiman

Aqueous and methanol extracts of Salvadora persica L., a plant used in Iraq for oral hygiene, was investigated for its antimicrobial activities against 7 isolated oral pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans using disc diffusion and micro-well dilution assays. According to both antimicrobial assays the aqueous extract inhibited all isolated microorganisms, especially the Streptococcus species, and was more efficient than the methanol extract, which was resisted by Lacto. acidophilus and Ps. aeruginosa. The present study evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiviral activities of the essential oil and various extracts of Salvia limbata C.A.Mey. and Salvia sclarea L., as well as the content of its essential oil. The activities of essential oils were tested against a wide range of human-, plant-, and food-borne microorganisms. A total of 55 microbial organisms belonging to 35 bacteria and 19 fungi and yeast species were tested using disk diffusion, micro dilution, and micro-well dilution. In the present study, the free radical scavenging potentials (DPPH radical and hydroxyl radical), inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and glutathione-S-transferase and antimicrobial properties of Sargassum sp. extract were investigated. The tested extract exhibited a dose-dependent free radical scavenging action against DPPH radical and hydroxyl radical and antimicrobial activity. In addition, inhibition of lipid peroxidation and glutathione-S-transferase activities were also observed. The overall results have established that this seaweed could be used against several diseases and, in the food processing industry, to preserve foods.

Compared to insects, little is known about innate immunity in ticks. This chapter addresses the molecular processes that recognize non-self and the cellular and molecular processes mobilized to phagocytose, engulf, inhibit or kill invaders. We discuss the receptors that recognize pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and the putative up-regulation of regulatory cascades that lead, ultimately, to cellular or molecular responses. We describe the molecular events that activate the cellular processes and the array of humoral factors that are mobilized against invading organisms, including antimicrobial peptides, proteases and protease inhibitors, lectins, coagulation factors and others.
