Antibacterial Activity Of Selected Plant Extracts On Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Lubna Abdallah

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

Based on the importance of herbal plants in medicine, this study was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of aqueous, ethanol and methanol extracts of Thymbra spicata, Nepeta curviflora, and Verbascum fruticulosum against two clinical isolates (I and II) of the gram positive methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Agar well diffusion method was performed to examine the antibacterial activity of all studied plant extracts. Micro-broth dilution method was used to measure the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) then the minimum bacteriocidal concentration (MBC) for all active extracts. The examined isolates were susceptible to the prepared plant extracts. Ethanol and methanol extracts …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) is a 25-kDa protein in the lipocalin family that shows antibacterial activity. The aim of this study was to clone human LCN2 into the mammalian-specific pIRES2-AcGFP1 vector and to determine the antibacterial activity of the recombinant pIRES2-AcGFP1-hLCN2 plasmid against major bacterial pathogens that cause bovine mastitis. The amplified hLCN2 was successfully cloned into the vector, and the plasmid was transfected into bovine mammary epithelial stem cells using nucleofection. Immunochemistry, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and ELISA were used to monitor and quantify hLCN2 expression in the cells. After 1 day of incubation, the concentration of hLCN2 secreted by …

Secondary dental caries are one of the major reasons for restoration replacements. Incorporating antimicrobial properties into dental materials would limit the initiation and progression of dental caries. In the current study, dental composites having 1%, 5%, and 10% (w/w) sodium pentaborate pentahydrate were prepared and analyzed for their mechanical properties, degree of monomer conversion (DC) rate, antibacterial effects against Streptococcus mutans, and biocompatibility with human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). Incorporation of boron into the composites significantly decreased flexural strength and DC in a dose-dependent manner, but the value for 1% boron-containing composite still remained within acceptable levels. Compressive strength …

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the possible antimicrobial and anticancer properties of the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw. (Fontinalaceae). We first obtained 8 different extracts (methanol; chloroform; acetone; ethyl acetate A, B, C, and D) by two different extraction processes. The antimicrobial activity of these extracts was then assessed by using the well diffusion method against 8 bacterial and 7 fungal strains. The results of antimicrobial studies showed that extracts of chloroform, acetone, and ethyl acetate A and C were active against almost all the species tested. The most effective extract was C, which was then …

Antibacterial Activity Of Seed Extracts Of Commercial And Wild Lathyrus Species, Noor Afshan Khan, Sadaf Quereshi, Akhilesh Pandey, Ashutosh Srivastava

Turkish Journal of Biology

Butanolic extract of seeds from 2 different Lathyrus species (Lathyrus ratan [commercial variety] and L. aphaca [wild variety]), were investigated for their in vitro antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activity against plant and human pathogenic bacteria was evaluated on the basis of inhibition zones (IZs) measured by disc diffusion method. The maximum inhibition was shown by L. ratan against the gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. L. aphaca seeds also showed inhibition but were inactive against Klebsiella pneumoniae. L. ratan extract was more active than L. aphaca. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values for both the seeds (in …
