Cascading Ecological Effects Of Low-Level Phosphorus Enrichment In The Florida Everglades, Evelyn Gaiser, Joel Trexler, Jennifer Richards, Daniel Childers, David Lee, Adrienne Edwards, Leonard Scinto, Krish Jayachandran, Gregory Noe, Ronald D. Jones Sep 2012

Cascading Ecological Effects Of Low-Level Phosphorus Enrichment In The Florida Everglades, Evelyn Gaiser, Joel Trexler, Jennifer Richards, Daniel Childers, David Lee, Adrienne Edwards, Leonard Scinto, Krish Jayachandran, Gregory Noe, Ronald D. Jones

Evelyn E. Gaiser

Few studies have examined long-term ecological effects of sustained low-level nutrient enhancement on wetland biota. To determine sustained effects of phosphorus (P) addition on Everglades marshes we added P at low levels (5, 15, and 30 µg L-1 above ambient) for 5 yr to triplicate 100-m flow-through channels in pristine marsh. A cascade of ecological responses occurred in similar sequence among treatments. Although the rate of change increased with dosing level, treatments converged to similar enriched endpoints, characterized most notably by a doubling of plant biomass and elimination of native, calcareous periphyton mats. The full sequence of biological changes occurred …

Influence Of Fungal Isolates Infecting Tall Fescue On Multitrophic Interactions, Tom Bultman, A Aguilera, T Sullivan Sep 2012

Influence Of Fungal Isolates Infecting Tall Fescue On Multitrophic Interactions, Tom Bultman, A Aguilera, T Sullivan

Thomas L. Bultman

The epichloae are ascomycetous fungi in the genera Epichloe and Neotyphodium that live within grasses. Some of these fungi produce alkaloids that can help protect the host from herbivores. The alkaloids may also travel up the food web and affect members of the third trophic level. In this way they can produce trophic cascades which are rippling effects when a trophic level impacts those above or below it. We briefly summarize the general patterns of multitrophic effects of endophytes and highlight the most recent studies on this topic. Further, we report on our study in which we tested if different …

Do Botanophila Flies Provide Reproductive Isolation Between Two Species Of Epichloe Fungi? A Field Test, Thomas Bultman, Adrian Leuchtmann, T. Sullivan, Austin Dreyer Sep 2012

Do Botanophila Flies Provide Reproductive Isolation Between Two Species Of Epichloe Fungi? A Field Test, Thomas Bultman, Adrian Leuchtmann, T. Sullivan, Austin Dreyer

Thomas L. Bultman

P>Epichloe spp., fungal endophytes of cool season grasses, produce collars of mycelium (stromata) on host stems that Botanophila flies visit for egg laying. Flies transfer fungal gametes among stromata and thereby serve to cross-fertilize fungi. Hence, the interaction is analogous to insect pollination in angiosperms. While most Epichloe species are not interfertile, Epichloe typhina and Epichloe clarkii can hybridize. We investigated whether Botanophila flies play a role in the reproductive isolation of the two Epichloe species at a field site in southwestern Switzerland. We estimated the density of stromata and collected fly larvae and stromata occurring on plants. While …

Direct Visualization Of Clay Microfabric Signatures Driving Organic Matter Preservation In Fine-Grained Sediment, Kenneth Curry Mar 2012

Direct Visualization Of Clay Microfabric Signatures Driving Organic Matter Preservation In Fine-Grained Sediment, Kenneth Curry

Kenneth J. Curry

We employed direct visualization of organic matter (OM) sequestered by microfabric signatures in organo-clay systems to study mechanisms of OM protection. We studied polysaccharides, an abundant class of OM in marine sediments, associated with the nano- and microfabric of clay sediment using a novel application of transmission electron microscopy, histochemical staining (periodic acid-thiosemicarbazide-silver proteinate), and enzymatic digestion techniques. We used two experimental organo-clay sediment environments. First, laboratory-consolidated sediment with 10% chitin (w/w) added was probed for chitin before and after digestion with chitinase. Second, fecal pellets from the polychaete Heteromastus filiformis were used as a natural environment rich in clay …
