Index Of Juvenile Striped Bass, White Perch, And Alosine Fishes In The Rappahannock River Following The March 1980 Oil Spill, William H. Kriete Jr. Jan 1980

Index Of Juvenile Striped Bass, White Perch, And Alosine Fishes In The Rappahannock River Following The March 1980 Oil Spill, William H. Kriete Jr.

Reports

A ruptured pipeline caused a large spill of petroleum products above Fredericksburg, VA on March 6, 1980. Much of the oil was recovered; however, a portion of the contaminant eventually reached the Rappahannock River. The significance of the spill was magnified because it occurred during spawning of anadromous and other commerically important fishes.

A study following the spill was conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in the summer of 1980 in the upper Rappahannock River. The objectives as stated in the proposal were to (1) determine an index of abundance for juvenile striped bass (Morone saxatilis), alewife …

Biology And Management Of River Herring And Shad In Virginia : Completion Report, 1970-73, Walter J. Hoagman, John V. Merriner, Richard St. Pierre, Woodrow L. Wilson

Reports

This report represents the final report for the 3-year segment 1970-1973 and the annual report for the contract period 1 October 1972 to 15 October 197 3. The projec.t has been active since 1965, thus relevant data has been carried forward, added to, and analyzed in this report. The analysis, however, remains subject to later refinement and possible reinterpretation, because many of the jobs and objectives will require several additional years of study before definitive conclusions can be generalized.

The data presented here supercedes similar tables presented in previous annual reports because we have now standardized methods and solidified our …

Biology And Utilization Of Anadromous Alosids: Annual Progress Report (October 1, 1971 - September 30, 1972), Jackson Davis, Walter J. Hoagman, John V. Merriner, Richard A. St. Pierre, Woodrow L. Wilson Jan 1972

Biology And Utilization Of Anadromous Alosids: Annual Progress Report (October 1, 1971 - September 30, 1972), Jackson Davis, Walter J. Hoagman, John V. Merriner, Richard A. St. Pierre, Woodrow L. Wilson

Reports

Fishing effort for herring and shad has been stable for the past three years in the lower Chesapeake Bay and tributaries. River herring catch in 1972 was slightly above the 1971 landings but continued to be very low.

River herring landings in U.S. waters have declined as the c.atch has been increased by non-nationals. The catch per unit of effort has decreased from 122.5 in 1965 to 30.3 in 1972 in Virginia waters. Total mortality rates for river herring were without significant trend from 1965-1971.

Twice as much towing effort was expended in 1972 as in other years. The abundance …

Biology And Utilization Of Anadromous Alosids: Annual Progress Report (October 1, 1968 - September 30, 1969, Jackson Davis, Joseph P. Miller, J. Ernest Warriner

Reports

Estimates of average annual mortality rates were derived. from the decline in numbers of repeat river herring spawners each year. in the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers. The 1961 year-class contributed slightly more than 6 million fish to the fishery since 1965 while the 1962 year-class contributed nearly 5 million fish. Estimates could not be made for the James and York Rivers because the catch could not be measured. Fishing effort generally declined from 1968 in all major rivers with the Potomac River exhibiting the greatest decline. The catch of river herring in 1969 was generally lower than in 1968. Shad …

Biology And Utilization Of Anadromous Alosids: Annual Progress Report (October 1, 1967 - September 30, 1968), Jackson Davis, J. Ernest Warinner, Joseph P. Miller

Reports

Scales were collected from alewife, blueback, American shad and hickory shad in each tidal river system in Virginia at weekly intervals. Reading of alewife scales is complete to date and the alewife catch from the York and Rappahannock Rivers has been analyzed for sex composition and spawning history.

Lack of catch records from the James and Potomac Rivers precludes analysis of these populations. Fishing effort in the major rivers during 1968 was equal to that of 1967. The catch of river herring increased approximately .4 million pounds over 19_67 increasing catch per unit of effort to the highest level on …
