Across the estuaries of the east coast and wetlands of the Great Lakes, the invasive grass Phragmites australis outcompetes other vegetation and destroys local ecosystems. Because its roots are tolerant to salinity that other plants find hellish, Phragmites invasions begin with vegetative spread of genetic clones in brackish marshlands.This plant can grow over three meters tall at densities of 50 stems/m2, provides poor wildlife habitat, and is very difficult to eradicate. In wetlands of Utah and southern Idaho as well as estuaries of the east coast, the ten-foot tall invasive grass Phragmites australis can be found near waterways, where it outcompetes native plants and degrades wildlife habitat. Phragmites australis is an obligate out-crossing plant that can spread sexually through seed disper- sal, or asexually via stolons and rhi- zomes (Kettenring and Mock 2012). Small patches are usually a single genetic individual, spreading vegetatively (and slowly) via runners; when patches become genetically diverse viable seeds are produced and invasion rates can be increase by an order of magnitude (Kettenring et al. 2011)

An Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System ANFIS with different techniques of clustering is successfully developed to solve one of the problems of medical diagnoses, because it has the advantage of powerful modeling ability. In this paper, we propose the generation of an adaptive neuro-Fuzzy Inference System model using different clustering models such as a subtractive fuzzy clustering (SFC) model and a fuzzy c-mean clustering (FCM) model in the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model for selecting the hidden node centers. The main control goal of the fed-batch process is to maximize the yield of target product as well as to minimize the operation costs simultaneously. Considering the existence of time delay and the switching nature in the fed-batch process, a time-delayed switched system is proposed to formulate the 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) production process. Developing suitable dynamic models of bioprocess is a difficult issue in bioscience. In this paper, considering the microbial metabolism mechanism, i.e., the production of new biomass is delayed by the amount of time it takes to metabolize the nutrients, in glycerol bioconversion to 1,3-propanediol, we propose a nonlinear time-delay system to formulate the fed-batch fermentation process. Some important properties are also discussed. Silkworm cocoon has a complex hierarchic structure with discontinuity. In this paper, heat transfer through the silkworm cocoon is studied using fractal theory. The fractal approach has been successfully applied to explain the fascinating phenomenon of cocoon survival under extreme temperature environment. A better understanding of heat transfer mechanisms for the cocoon could be beneficial to the design of biomimetic clothes for special applications.

Mathematical modelling and parameter identification of a microbial batch fermentation process is considered in this paper. In view of the existence of time delays, a nonlinear time-delay system is firstly proposed to formulate the fermentation process. Some important properties are also discussed. Taking the errors between the computational values and the experimental data as the cost function, a parameter identification model subject to continuous state constraints and parameter constraints is then presented. To seek the optimal time delay and the optimal kinetic parameters, an improved differential evolution algorithm in conjunction with the constraint transcription technique is developed. Locusts exhibit two interconvertible behavioral phases, solitarious and gregarious. While solitarious individuals are repelled from other locusts, gregarious insects are attracted to conspecifics and can form large aggregations such as marching hopper bands. Numerous biological experiments at the individual level have shown how crowding biases conversion towards the gregarious form. To understand the formation of marching locust hopper bands, we study phase change at the collective level, and in a quantitative framework. Considering the hybrid nature in fed-batch culture of glycerol biconversion to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) by Klebsiella pneumoniae, we propose a state-based switching dynamical system to describe the fermentation process. To maximize the concentration of 1,3-PD at the terminal time, an optimal switching control model subject to our proposed switching system and constraints of continuous state inequality and control function is presented. Mathematical modeling and parameter estimation are critical steps in the optimization of biotechnological processes. In the 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD )production by glycerol fermentation process under anaerobic conditions, 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA) accumulation would arouse an irreversible cessation of the fermentation process. Considering 3-HPA inhibitions to cells growth and to activities of enzymes, we propose a novel mathematical model to describe glycerol continuous cultures. A nonlinear dynamical system, in which the feed rates of glycerol and alkali are taken as the control functions, is first proposed to formulate the fed-batch culture of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) production. To maximize the 1,3-PD concentration at the terminal time, a constrained optimal control model is then presented. A solution approach is developed to seek the optimal feed rates based on control vector parametrization method and improved differential evolution algorithm. The proposed methodology yielded an increase by 32.17% of 1,3-PD concentration at the terminal time.
