This study compared physicochemical and sensory qualities of deli-style turkey breast produced pre-converted celery juice powder (CP; for alternative curing) or sodium nitrite (SN; for conventional curing). Formulas were designed to include 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 ppm ingoing sodium nitrite or the equivalent from CP or SN, and 3 replicates of products were manufactured. Turkey and curing brines were tumbled, stuffed, and cooked to an internal temperature of 73.9oC. Sera from 1133 Turkish horses were obtained and tested for equid herpesvirus 3 (EHV-3) antibodies using a sero-neutralisation test. The sample consisted of 420 privately owned working horses from 2 regions of Turkey, 428 brood horses from private stud farms and breeding stations, and 285 racehorses from private stud farms. Neutralising antibodies against EHV-3 were found in 287 (25.3%) of the 1133 analysed sera. The highest seroprevalence for EHV-3 was detected in the brood horses (51.2%), followed by the racehorses (10.2%), and the working horses (9.3%). This study was conducted between July 2011 and January 2012 in Gökçeada, Turkey, to determine the metazoan parasite fauna of brown meagre (Sciaena umbra). The metazoan parasite fauna of 53 brown meagre samples was investigated and a total of 7 parasite species [Anoiktostoma coronatum, Paracryptogonimus aloysiae (Digenea), Longicollum pagrosomi (Acanthocephala), Contracaecum fabri (Nematoda), Trachelobdella lubrica (Hirudinea), Nerocila bivittata, and praniza larvae (Isopoda)] were identified. It was determined that Paracryptogonimus aloysiae was the dominant parasite species of brown meagre with the prevalence of 66.04% in this region. Anoiktostoma coronatum and Paracryptogonimus aloysiae were reported for the first time in Turkey.

Both cattle and dogs were examined in modern and rural dairy farms that had a history of abortion over 5%. The blood samples were collected from 427 aborted cattle and the sera were tested using a commercial ELISA test kit. Additionally, a necropsy procedure was carried out on the fetuses and calves dead within 2 months after birth; the tissue samples were evaluated by histopathologic, immunoperoxidase, and PCR techniques. Species composition and distribution of rumen ciliates were investigated in the rumen contents of 15 domestic goats living in İzmir, Turkey. Nineteen species and 10 morphotypes belonging to 7 genera were identified. The mean number of ciliates was (94.3 ± 33.4) × 10^4 cells mL^{-1} rumen contents, which is higher than that of other goat hosts reported from Turkey and the world. The mean number of ciliate species per host was 9.2 ± 3.4. Entodinium semahatae, E. rostratum, and Ophryoscolex purkynjei m. bifidoquadricinctus are new host records for goats. In this study, the breeding ecology and behaviour of the Great Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus arundinaceus, was studied at Poyrazlar Lake, Turkey. The breeding period started in the first week of May. The incubation period lasted 14 days. As clutch size increased, the diameter of the nests became larger (r = 0.65). Diameters of nests containing different clutch sizes varied significantly from one another (P < 0.01). However, their height did not change (r = 0.24). There was no significant height difference between nests containing different clutch sizes (P > 0.05). As the nests became farther from the shore, the clutch size and the egg weight increased, because mature adults built their nests on the reeds in deeper areas (r = 0.59, r = 0.73). On …

The morphological variability of the baculum (os penis) of 147 adult specimens of species in the genus Nannospalax from 58 localities in Turkey was examined using morphological and numerical taxonomic methods. Significant differences among all of the Turkish species in the genus were determined by morphological and biometrical comparison of the bacula, and the results of this study showed that N. nehringi and N. xanthodon are separate species and that the names are not synonyms. The sawfly Cimbex quadrimaculata (Müller) (Hymenoptera: Cimbicidae) has been identified as a serious defoliator of young almond plants in Antalya. Two ichneumonid parasitoids, Opheltes glaucopterus (Linnaeus) and Phobetes nigriceps (Gravenhorst) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Ctenopelmatinae), were reared as larva-pupa parasitoids of C. quadrimaculata. Of these, P. nigriceps was obtained for the first time from C. quadrimaculata; it is a new record for the Turkish fauna as well as for the continent of Asia.

Skeletal muscles (tongue, masseter, leg, intercostal, and diaphragmatic muscles) and brain samples of 100 sheep at slaughter were analysed for the presence of T. gondii tissue cysts along with serum IgG titres. Two methods of isolation by percoll gradient centrifugation and tissue microarray (TMA) technique with immunoperoxidase staining were used. Seropositivity was detected in 88% (88/100) of sheep sera analysed by indirect fluorescent antibody test. Tissue cysts were observed in 46 (52.3%, 46/88) and 15 (17%, 15/88) of the seropositive sheep with the isolation technique and TMA and immunoperoxidase staining, respectively. A total of 143 species belonging to Amphipoda were found at the depths between the supralittoral zone and 200 m along the Levantine coast of Turkey. Ten species (Ampelisca spinifer, Cheiriphotis mediterranea, Deutella shieckei, Ericthonius argenteus, Gammaropsis crenulata, Gammaropsis sophiae, Isaea montagui, Ischyrocerus inexpectatus, Liropus elongatus, and Melita bulla) were recorded for the first time in Turkey, while 69 species were new for the Levantine coast of Turkey. Platorchestia platensis was the only species observed out of water (supralittoral). The other encountered species showed distribution in various depths of between 0 and 200 m. Genetic differences in 2 regions (D-loop and cytochrome b) of mitochondrial DNA in Nannospalax xanthodon and Nannospalax ehrenbergi were determined using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. For 2 species distributed in Anatolia, 94 specimens from 62 populations of Nannospalax xanthodon and 2 populations of Nannospalax ehrenbergi were studied. To reveal genetic differences, the D-loop (626 bp) and cytochrome b (500 bp) regions of mitochondrial DNA were amplified and then cut by 4 different restriction endonuclease enzymes (BamH-I, Taq-I, Alu-I, and Msp-I). The Helconinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) species recorded from Turkey as of the end of 2012 are listed. The total number of species was determined as 10. Changes in comparison to the previous Turkish fauna are briefly annotated and the distributions for all species in each of the 68 biogeographical provinces are presented. After the publication of our previous fauna, 8 species belonging 2 genera have been recorded as new to Turkey. Subsequent studies reported 10 Diospilini species for the fauna, among which 7 species are distributed only in Asian Turkey and 3 species are distributed in both Asian and European Turkey. …

The Taxonomic Status And Geographic Distribution Of The European Hare (Lepus Europaeus Pallas, 1778) In Turkey (Mammalia: Lagomorpha), Yasi̇n Demi̇rbaş, İrfan Albayrak

This study was based on 125 specimens of hares collected from 61 different localities in Turkey between 2006 and 2010. We present diagnostic characters, pelage coloration, external, cranial and phallic measurements, skull and phallus features, hair structure, and collection localities of hares from Turkey. Additionally, we analyze morphometric variations of 5 regional populations according to the physiography/orography of the study area. Among the morphometric variables, 10 characters (weight, tail length, basal length, condylobasal length, rostral breadth, height of braincase, foramen incisiva length, occipitonasal length, profile length, and mandible length) are found to be significantly different between the populations (ANOVA, P < 0.01). Principal component analysis of 22 morphometric measurements is performed, and 71.56% of total variance is explained through 5 principle components. The Thracian specimen is distinguished from other populations on the first 2 canonical discriminant functions and the cluster dendrogram. The hair structure, as examined by scanning electron microscope, is found to be flattened and imbricate. Our Anatolian specimens are discussed at the subspecies level, comparing them to the relevant literature, and it is concluded that Lepus europaeus in Anatolia is represented by only one subspecies, Lepus europaeus syriacus.

A total of 625 fish belonging to 25 fish species were collected from the coastal areas of the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey and were examined for fish parasites. The number of specimens of fish parasites collected included 242 digeneans (23 Anisocoelium capitellatum, 12 Anisocladium gracile, 50 Anisocladium fallax, 1 Stephanostomum minutum, 131 Helicometra fasciata, and 25 Lecithochirium musculus) and 517 cestodes (437 Grillotia erinaceus, 79 Progrillotia dasyatidis, and 1 Scolex pleuronectis). Diplodinium rangiferi was observed in rumen contents from a single animal out of 25 cattle surveyed in the area of Kastamonu, Turkey. It constituted 2.7% of the total ciliate population and had a 4% frequency of appearance. The size and percentage occurrence of this species in the present study are compared to those previously reported for other animal hosts living in different geographical locations. This study reports for the first time in Turkey and the world the naturally occurring presence of D. rangiferi in cattle.

Amblyseius bryophilus Karg (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is recorded for the first time for the Turkish fauna. The specimens were collected on bean plants infested with Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) in Ayder plateau, Rize Province, Turkey. In this paper, the redescription of A. bryophilus based on the collected adult females and a key to the Turkish Amblyseius species are given.

Using skeletochronology, the age structure of a breeding population portion of Acanthodactylus boskianus (Daudin, 1802) from the southeast of Turkey was studied for the first time. A total of 21 preserved (9 males, 8 females, and 4 juveniles) specimens were used in this study. According to the analysis of the age structure based on counting lines of arrested growth, ages ranged from 6 to 9 years (mean: 7.44 ± 0.34 years) in males and from 5 to 7 years (mean: 6.13 ± 0.30 years) in females. Although there have been several studies based on the molecular data of green toads, some ambiguities related to the systematics of these toads in Turkey still remain. Thus, we used combined mitochondrial genes (D-loop and 12S ribosomal RNA) to resolve these taxonomic problems. We also applied demographic analysis to elucidate the evolutionary history using these genes. We found 3 haplotype groups: 1 for Bufo viridis and 2 lineages for Bufotes variabilis, with only the latter represented in Turkey. The examination of specimens collected from various parts of Turkey, mainly from East Anatolia, and an overview of the literature allows us to reach the conclusion that the Melittidae of Turkey are represented by 3 genera, Dasypoda (14 species), Macropis (2 species), and Melitta (9 species), with a total of 25 species including Dasypoda toroki Michez, 2004, a new record for the Turkish fauna. This is the first study on parasite fauna of Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819 in Turkish waters. Mussel samples were collected monthly at 3 sampling stations on the coast of Sinop on the Black Sea in the period between August 2012 and July 2013. A total of 1740 mussels were examined for parasites using standard parasitological investigation procedures. The parasites identified included the following: 2 protozoans, Nematopsis legeri (32.12%) and Peniculistoma mytili (6.72%); 1 turbellarian, Urastoma cyprinae (6.32%); 1 trematode, Parvatrema duboisi (4.54%); and 1 polychaeta, Polydora ciliata (2.24%). This study was carried out to determine the tachinid parasitoids of lepidopterous and heteropterous hosts from some localities in the Kelkit Valley (Amasya, Tokat, Sivas) of Turkey. Eleven species belonging to the subfamily Exoristinae and 9 species belonging to the subfamily Phasiinae were reared. Eurygaster maura L. (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) for Gymnosoma desertorum Rohdendorf and Corizus hyoscyami (L.) (Rhopalidae) for Elomyia lateralis (Meig.) were recorded for the first time as tachinid/host-couples. Additionally, 6 tachinid/host-couples were recorded for the first time from Turkey.

Psyllopsis repens Loginova, 1963 (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) has been recorded for the first time in Turkey (Isparta). This jumping plant-lice species is associated with ash trees (Fraxinus angustifolia, F. excelsior, and F. ornus) and induces galls on leaves and buds. Additionally, Anthocoris nemoralis (Fabricius, 1794) has been confirmed as a predator of P. repens.

Contribution To The Knowledge Of The Scutelleridae (Hemiptera, Heteroptera) Fauna Of Turkey, Erol Yildirim, Gülten Yazici, Ni̇hal Karakurt

This study is based on material of the family Scutelleridae collected from different localities in Turkey between 1969 and 2013. In this study, 13 species of 7 genera belonging to 4 subfamilies (Eurygasterinae, Elvisurinae, Odontoscelinae, Odontotarsinae) from the family Scutelleridae were recorded from Turkey. Among them, Eurygaster integriceps Puton, 1881; Eurygaster maura (Linnaeus, 1758); and Odontotarsus purpureolineatus (Rossi, 1790) have been found to be the most abundant and widespread species. Phimodera flori Fieber, 1863 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. In addition, new localities were found for some species that have already been reported in Turkey.

A new species of the genus Dinotrema Foerster is reported from the Samsun region on the central Black Sea coast of Turkey. The genus generally parasitizes flies and ranks among the most species-rich taxa of the Braconidae. Morphological details of the new species Dinotrema samsunense Fischer & Sullivan are described, figured, and compared taxonomically with the most closely related species.

In this paper, the current status of the species diversity of 13 phyla, namely Platyhelminthes, Xenacoelomorpha, Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Myxozoa, Tardigrada, Cephalorhyncha, Nemertea, Echiura, Brachiopoda, Phoronida, Chaetognatha, and Chordata (invertebrates, only Tunicata, Cephalochordata, and Hemichordata) along the coasts of Turkey is reviewed. The present paper provides an updated taxonomic list of sipunculan species known from the coasts of Turkey. A total of 21 species belonging to 5 families have been reported from the region. Eighteen species were determined in the Levantine Sea, 17 species in the Aegean Sea, 6 species in the Sea of Marmara, and a single species in the Black Sea. The family Golfingiidae had the majority of species (8 species, 38%), followed by Phascolosomatidae (5 species, 24%), Aspidosiphonidae (4 species, 19%), Phascolionidae (3 species, 14%), and Sipunculidae (1 species, 5%), respectively. This recent checklist of marine arthropods found on the coasts of Turkey represents a total of 1531 species belonging to 7 classes: Malacostraca (766 species), Maxillopoda (437 species), Ostracoda (263 species), Pycnogonida (27 species), Arachnida (26 species), Branchiopoda (7 species), and Insecta (5 species). Seventy-five species were classified as alien species in the region. This paper also includes the first record of the amphipod Melita valesi from the Levantine coast of Turkey (Kaş, Gulf of Antalya).
