Characterization Of Host Immune Responses To Eimeria Adenoeides Infection In Turkey Poults, Ujvala Deepthi Gadde

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coccidiosis is a common enteric disease of turkeys that is caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Eimeria. There are about seven species of Eimeria that affect turkeys and of these E. adenoeides is the most pathogenic and commonly recognized. Infection with Eimeria is known to induce a long lasting protective immunity in chickens, but nothing is known regarding the acquisition of immunity to Eimeria in turkeys. The experiments reported here were aimed at investigating the biological and cellular immune response to E. adenoeides in turkey poults under different conditions of exposure. In experiment 1 (Chapter II), 20 …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study is based upon material of the family Dermestidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 1965 and 2012. The study resulted in the recording for the Turkish fauna of 28 species of 6 genera belonging to 3 subfamilies (Attageninae, Dermestinae, Megatominae) within the family Dermestidae. Among them, Attagenus unicolor unicolor (Brahm, 1791), Anthrenus scrophulariae scrophulariae (Linnaeus, 1758), and Anthrenus goliath Saulcy in Mulsant & Rey, 1868 have been found to be the most abundant and widespread species. Separately, Anthrenus eichleri Kadej & Háva, 2006 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. In addition, new localities are added …

The data concerning the reproduction of 1404 samples, reproduced from 1 male and 2 females in the laboratory and 34 samples obtained from 6 localities near Silifke, were recorded. For A. cilicicus, it was determined that …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Small (1-3 µm in diameter, ring, oval, or comma shaped) piroplasms suggestive of Babesia spp. were observed upon microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smears from a 3.5-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier with clinical signs of pyrexia, weakness, mucous membrane pallor, and depression living in Aydın, Turkey, in February, 2009. To confirm the presence and to identify the species of Babesia spp., a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was performed using primers amplifying a 670 bp fragment of the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia gibsoni and the PCR products were analyzed by sequencing. The nucleotide sequence was compared to the …

Checklist Of Small Ruminant Gastrointestinal Nematodes And Their Geographical Distribution In Turkey, Feri̇de Sevi̇mli̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This review presents a search of the literature about gastrointestinal nematodosis of small ruminants. The search was performed on 58 articles published on necropsied sheep and goats between 1937 and 2011 in Turkey. This review identified 43 nematode species belonging to sheep and goats, assessed the prevalence of infection in different regions of Turkey, and evaluated the effect of age, sex, race, nutrition, and seasonal condition. This is the first review that specifically evaluated the gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants for 74 annual periods in Turkey.

Archaeological excavations at the site of Yenikapı, the most important main station for Metro and Marmaray projects on the European side of İstanbul, were started in 2004 with the discovery of numerous shipwrecks, amphorae, and skeletal remains belonging to animals. The findings from the excavations conducted by the İstanbul Archaeological Museums of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums proved that this site, known in the Ottoman period as 'Langa Bostanları', was actually the ancient harbor of Theodosius. The archeological material and animal skeletal residues, mostly of horse origin, were found side by side in excavations initiated in 2004 …

In this study, we compared 2 different methodologies (traditional morphometrics, TM, and geometric morphometrics, GM) in order to determine their ability to discriminate the honey bee populations distributed throughout Turkey. In TM, 16 morphometric characters were measured from the forewings of different honey bee populations from Turkey. A total of 20 landmarks were utilized for the GM analysis. Multivariate statistical analysis of data obtained from the 2 methodologies showed that GM was more successful (81.5%) than TM (70.4%). While the GM method is much simpler and easier compared to the standard morphometric measurement of size characters and angles of wing …

Morphometric And Allozymic Differences Between Bearded Tit Panurus Biarmicus (Aves: Passeriformes) Subpopulations In A Large Wetland And A Small Pond In Central Anatolia, Turkey, Fulya Saygili, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Pinar Çam, Duygu Yüce

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus) is a small passerine bird occurring only in wetland habitats. Three subspecies of the Bearded Tit are known from Turkey. The endemic subspecies Panurus biarmicus kosswigi has only been recorded from Amik Lake in Turkey. This subspecies is now considered extinct; the apparent cause of this extinction was the drought affecting the lake. Other subpopulations might be similarly threatened by habitat loss. Therefore, it is important to investigate the morphometric characteristics and genetic variation of these local subpopulations. In this study, body weights and 12 morphometric characters were measured for Bearded Tit individuals in the …
