First Record Of The Eucalyptus Seed Gall Wasp, Quadrastichodella Nova Girault, 1922, (Eulophidae: Tetrastichinae) From Turkey, Oğuzhan Doğanlar, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The present study was carried out during 2006 and 2007 in a eucalyptus planted area in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The eulophid species Quadrastichodella nova Girault (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae: Tetrastichinae) was collected on Eucalyptus spp. seed capsules for the first time in Turkey. This species induces galls on the seeds, attaining low levels of infestation. The plant species Eucalyptus camaldulensis L. (Myrtaceae) is reported as new host for Q. nova.

Incidence Of Endemic Diseases In Dairy Herds In Burdur, Konya, And Kırklareli Provinces In Turkey, Cengi̇z Yalçin, Savaş Sariözkan, Ahmet Şener Yildiz, Ayteki̇n Günlü

A prospective longitudinal observation study was carried out with 150 randomly selected dairy herds from among 1684 Turkish Dairy Breeding Association (TDBA) herds in Burdur, Konya, and Kırklareli provinces. The herds were stratified as small scale (less than 11 milking cows) and medium-large scale (more than 10 milking cows). The survey was conducted between October 2003 and September 2004, and each herd was visited at least once per month. As the weighted average of 3 provinces, the most frequent events were fertility disorders (30.2%) and udder diseases (28.3%), followed by puerperal disorders (18.3%) and locomotor system disorders (10.0%). This study was based on 57 beech marten (Martes foina) specimens collected in Turkey between 1994 and 1998. The specimens were divided into 3 age classes as young, juvenile, and adult on the basis of the morphology of the sagittal and lambdoidal crests, and temporal ridges, relative lengths of the interorbital and postorbital constrictions, the degree of wear in molar and canine teeth, baculum weight and structure, pelage color, cranial and bacular measurements, and field notes concerning sexual maturity and lactation. Some specimens of Torymidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) were collected in Turkey, one of which belongs to Idarnotorymus Masi, 1916 (Torymidae: Toryminae) as a new species, I. burdurensis, and is described from Burdur province. The diagnostic characters of the genus and the new species are reviewed, and photographs and line drawings of I. burdurensis are presented.

Nilotonia (Manotonia) tegulata (Viets 1951), known previously from Africa and Italy, is new for the Turkish fauna. The morphological features are compared with similar species, and an identification key for subgenera of the genus Nilotonia is given. The subgenus Manotonia is also reported for the first time from Turkey.

The Natural History Of The Egyptian Fruit Bat, Rousettus Aegyptiacus, In Turkey (Mammalia: Chiroptera), İrfan Albayrak, Nursel Aşan, Tarkan Yorulmaz

Aspects of the ecology, karyology, and taxonomic status of the Egyptian fruit bat, Rousettus aegyptiacus, in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated based on 41 specimens obtained between 1977 and 2003. Distribution, external and cranial morphometrics, pelage coloration, baculum morphology, karyology, colony size, roosting and feeding ecology, and conservation and management issues were recorded. The fruit bat in Turkey is represented by the nominate subspecies, R. a. aegyptiacus. Sexual dimorphism was recorded in pelage coloration and morphometric data. Additional Notes On The Odonata Fauna Of Kurupelit (Samsun, Turkey), Ali̇ Mi̇roğlu, Veysel Kartal

In this study 387 Odonata specimens were collected and identified from the vicinity of streams and puddles in Kurupelit, Samsun, Turkey, between May and October 2002-2005. In all, 27 species from 17 genera belonging to 9 families were identified, 9 of which (Coenagrion scitulum, Ischnura elegans ebneri, Aeshna affinis, Aeshna isosceles antehumeralis, Anax parthenope, Hemianax ephippiger, Libellula depressa, Libellula fulva, and Orthetrum brunneum) are new records for the Odonata fauna of Samsun. This study includes faunistic and distributional records of the 27 species.

The Greater Noctule, Nyctalus lasiopterus, was recorded from southwestern Turkey for the third time. The dorsal fur of the Greater Noctule, which also covers the underpart of the wing membrane, along with the forearm and propatagium, is uniformly dark brown. The cranium shows typical characteristics of the noctule bats. In addition to these, the exoccipital is convex and is markedly visible in the planar view of the skull. The present study provides data on the abundance of syntopic southern crested newts, Triturus karelinii, and banded newts, Triturus vittatus, in Uludağ National Park. The population of T. karelinii was 275 ± 60.9 (95% CI = 138-413) in Kirazlıyayla and 424 ± 85.6 (95% CI = 212-636) in Sarıalan. The populations of T. vittatus in Kirazlıyayla and Sarıalan were 392 ± 85.6 (95% CI = 196-588) and 158 ± 37.9 (95% CI = 79-237), respectively. This study was carried out in 2005. The larvae, virgin, and adult females of Parthenolecanium persicae, and larvae of Eupeodes corollae were collected from almond tree plantations in the province of Diyarbakir, Turkey, during May and June, and brought to the laboratory for rearing. P. persicae was determined as a new host of E. corollae.

For this study, ostracod samples collected from a total of 9 stations in 2 maar lakes (Acı and Meke) and 1 sinkhole lake (Meyil) in Konya, Turkey were investigated. Accordingly, 14 ostracod taxa (Darwinula stevensoni, Candona angulata, Candona sp. 1, Candona sp. 2, Pseudocandona marchica, Cypria sp., Ilyocypris gibba, I. bradyi, I. monstrifica, Heterocypris salina, Potamocypris sp., Limnocythere sp., Paralimnocythere sp., and Cythereis sp.) belonging to 10 genera were identified. Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) Species Associated With Some Umbelliferae Plants Occurring In Palandöken Mountains Of Erzurum, Turkey, İrfan Çoruh, Sali̇ha Çoruh

The Ichneumonidae species associated with Umbelliferae plants in Palandöken Mountains in Erzurum were investigated between July 1996 and August 1997. Among the 5 plant species, Seselis libanotis and Carum carvi were more attractive for ichneumonid species than the rest of the species. The first one was visited by 13 ichneumonid species with 109 individuals and the second one was visited by 9 species with 220 individuals. All these plant species could be accepted good nectar reservoir for ichneumonids.

Karyotype And Hair Scale Structure Of Nannospalax Leucodon (Nordmann, 1840) From Central Anatolia (Rodentia: Spalacidae), Nursel Aşan, Tuğba Yağci

The karyotype and hair scale structure of the subterranean mole rat, Nannospalax leucodon (Nordmann, 1840), in Kırıkkale province were determined. The diploid number, fundamental number, and the number of autosomal arms were 54, 74, and 70, respectively. The structure of the hair scale type was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and was found to be serrate coronal, simple coronal, and erose coronal at the base, shaft, and tip, respectively. The chromosomal form and hair scale structure of the mole rat were recorded for the first time from Kırıkkale province.

Morphometric measurements and color-pattern features of 62 samples of Mauremys rivulata from the Lake District (Göller Bölgesi) and the Mediterranean Region of Turkey were compared. Between populations, males apparently differed in 10 characters and females in 12 characters (independent t-test), but coefficient of difference (CD) values for these characters were not significant, and sexes were combined into a single group and compared with Aegean M. rivulata with respect to morphometric features. This research was carried out in almond orchards (Amygdalus sp.) in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia in 2003 in order to determine the spider fauna. Among the 129 specimens collected, 21 species belonging to 16 genera and 9 families were recorded at 10 localities with more spiders in the almond orchards in these regions. Among the species, Atea sturmi (Hahn, 1831) is a new record for the araneo-fauna of Turkey. The study was the first on spider fauna in almond orchards in Turkey.

This study is based on the fruit fly material collected in the Kayseri and Sivas provinces of Turkey during 2005 and 2006. Thirty-nine species of fruit flies were identified in the study region. Urophora tenuior Hendel is recorded for the first time from Turkey. The distribution, host plants, and figures of wing patterns of each species are given. The zoogeographic distribution of the species is included.

This study was based on 1627 specimens belonging to 12 species and 1 subspecies of 8 genera in 7 families of the infraorders Gerromorpha and Leptopodomorpha of the order Heteroptera. The specimens were collected from Southwest Anatolia (provinces Antalya, Burdur, Isparta, Denizli, Aydın, and Muğla) during 2000-2002. Eleven species and 1 subspecies of these are the first records for this area. Audouin´s gull (Larus audouinii) eggshells from 2 archipelagos (Karaburun-İzmir and Aydıncık-Mersin) in Turkey were collected between 2002 and 2003, and analyzed for lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) content. According to the results, mean Cu level of the eggshells was 1.855 ppm for the Aydıncık colony and 10.202 ppm for the Karaburun colony. Mean Pb level of the eggshells was 0.954 ppm for the Aydıncık colony and 4.601 ppm for the Karaburun colony. The detected metal levels did not seem to have any toxic effects on the Audouin´s gull populations. It is suggested that eggshells from abandoned nests of Audouin´s gulls …

A total of 13 species of Sarcophagidae (Diptera) belonging to 2 subfamilies collected from different localities in Turkey between 1994 and 2006 were examined. Wohlfahrtia meigeni (Schiner, 1862) is recorded for the first time from Turkey. This new record increases the number of flesh flies known from Turkey to 86. New locality records are given for all 13 species.

Hibernation Pattern And Importance Of Superoxide Dismutase For The Turkish Hamster, Mesocricetus Brandti (Mammalia: Rodentia), Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Di̇dem Erten, Nursel Gül

Specimens of Mesocricetus brandti were observed in order to assess the onset of hibernation and the inhibition rate of superoxide dismutase (SOD). The first individual began to hibernate on November 2 and the last animal awoke on May 5. Individual hibernation bouts varied from 8 to 63 days, and the longest uninterrupted hibernation was 4 days. In the hibernation period, the animals lost an average of 27.1 g, ranging from 2.7% to 38% of total body weight. In hibernating animals, the average inhibition rate of SOD was 82.3% while it was 77.5% in active animals. The inhibition rate of SOD …

Specimens of the subgenus Empis collected from different parts of Turkey between 1992 and 2006 were evaluated. Ten species of this genus were identified and 9 of these are the first records for the Turkish fauna.

A new species of the water mite family Pontarachnidae, Pontarachna episce n. sp., is described from the Mediterranean Sea near Turkey. It is the first member of this family from Turkey. The species was collected from a gill filament of a fish.
