Phorbia securis Tiensuu, 1935 (Diptera, Anthomyiidae) is a new pest found in the cereal areas of the Thrace region in Turkey. In this paper, its morphology, short biology, hosts and distribution in Turkey are presented.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Male and female specimens of Brachypoda mutila and male specimens of Bandakia concreta collected from a seepage spring in West Anatolia are described. Their morphological features are compared with those of the most closely related species. Identification keys to the species known from the Palearctic of the genera Bandakia and Brachypoda are provided.

Crustacean Diversity Among The Cystoseira Facies Of The Aegean Coast Of Turkey, Ahmet Kocataş, Tuncer Katağan, Murat Sezgi̇n, Fevzi̇ Kirkim, Cengi̇z Koçak

This study focused on the crustacean fauna of Cystoseira facies in the upper infralittoral zone of the Turkish Aegean coast. Investigations were carried out at 9 stations along a depth gradient of 2 to 5 m in June and July 1995. A total of 2179 specimens belonging to 81 species were identified. Among the species encountered, Ampithoe ramondi was the most common, with a dominance value of 11%, followed by Leptochelia savignyi (7%). Samples were collected from 79 stations in the Sakarya River Basin between September 1995 and August 1998. The subfamily Tenthredininae in the family Tenthredinidae was treated in this part of the study regarding the sawfly (Symphyta, Hymenoptera) fauna of Turkey. The materials were collected from various localities around the country, though examples from eastern Turkey are predominant. After examining more than 2500 specimens, 57 species in 8 genera were recorded. Eleven species were new for Turkish fauna; of these 3 species were recorded for the first time as Asian fauna. In order to determine the Malacostraca fauna of water bodies in the Taurus Mountains, southern Anatolia, 2 field studies were conducted in 1996 and 1997. As a result, Asellus aquaticus (L. 1758), Gammarus balcanicus Schäferna 1922, Gammarus longipedis G.S. Karaman & Pinkster 1987 and Stygobromus ambulans (F. Müller 1846) were determined from the investigated area. All the determined taxa are recorded for the first time from these localities.

Three families (Limacidae, Agriolimacidae and Milacidae) and 7 species, (Limacus flavus, Deroceras reticulatum, Deroceras berytensis, Mesolimax brauni, Mesolimax escherichi, Milax cf. altenai and Tandonia budapestensis) were identified from Lakes Region (Isparta, Burdur, and Afyon provinces). These include 1 endemic genus with 2 species. In this study some new habitat information and morphological data of the species are given. Additionally, Deroceras reticulatum, D. berytensis and Milax cf. altenai are new records for the area.

Taxonomic Status And Distribution Of Apodemus Mystacinus (Danford And Alston, 1877) (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Turkey, Ercüment Çolak, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Reyhan Çolak, Mustafa Sözen, Şaki̇r Özkurt, Tolga Kankiliç

Morphological, biometrical, karyological, bacular and phallic aspects of Apodemus mystacinus populations in Turkey were studied based on 117 specimens. The biometrical and phallic comparisons confirmed the distinctness of A. m. mystacinus and A. m. epimelas. The UPGMA tree divided populations in Turkey into 2 groups. The distance (D) between A. m. mystacinus and A. m. euxinus was 0.469. A. mystacinus had karyotypic values of 2n = 48, NFa = 50, and NF = 52. Being different from A. m. epimelas, there was a short groove in the dorsal view of the phallus in populations of A. m. mystacinus in Turkey.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale infection is characterized by respiratory disease, decreased growth and increased mortality in avians. Although a reasonably new infection, it has been found in many countries in a short period. In this article, this infection, which causes large financial losses in avian enterprises, was investigated.

A Karyological Analysis Of Garra Rufa (Heckel, 1843) (Pisces, Cyprinidae) From The Eastern Mediterranean River Basin In Turkey, Serap Ergene Gözükara, Tolga Çavaş

A cytogenetic investigation on 12 Garra rufa (Heckel, 1843) specimens, from Müftü stream, was carried out by a slight modification of the conventional air-dried technique, using gill epithelial cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 44, comprising 22 metacentric and 20 submetacentric chromosomes and 2 acrocentric chromosome carrying satellites (NF = 85). A haploid idiogram, based on the chromosome measurements, was prepared. A detailed standard karyotype of G. rufa was established for the first time in this study.

The material of 31 specimens of Nannospalax ehrenbergi was collected from 11 different localities in the Hatay region in south Anatolia. The specimens were studied in respect to their morphological and karyological characteristics in detail. Some taxonomic characteristics and measurements of the body and skull were investigated. The data obtained from the specimens were compared with the results of previously published accounts and with samples collected from more than 16 other localities in Turkey, Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Cultivated and non-cultivated areas were surveyed between 1999 and 2000 for coccoid fauna in Ankara, Afyon, Burdur and Isparta provinces. Nineteen species from 11 genera belonging to Pseudococcidae were found. Among these Chaetococcus phragmitis (Marchal, 1909), Phenacoccus bicerarius Borchsenius, 1949, Phenacoccus evelinae Tereznikova, 1968, Puto pilosellae (Sulc, 1898), Puto superbus (Leonardi, 1907), Rhodania porifera Goux, 1935, and Spinococcus morrisoni (Kritchenko, 1935) were new records for Turkish fauna.

In the course of examining rumen contents obtained from 8 domestic goats (Capra hircus L.) from the south-east of Turkey, a new ciliate species Entodinium salmani n.sp. (Entodiniidae, Entodiniomorphida) and 4 formae [E. salmani salmani n.sp., n.f., E. salmani monospinosum n.sp., n.f., E. salmani bispinosum n.sp., n.f., E. salmani trispinosum n.sp., n.f.] were distinguished. The main characteristics of these species and formae are described in detail and compared with those of similar ones previously reported.

A Contribution To The Knowledge Of Tenthredinidae (Symphyta, Hymenoptera) Fauna Of Turkey Part Ii: Subfamilies Blennocampinae, Dolerinae, Nematinae And Selandrinae, Önder Çalmaşur, Hi̇kmet Özbek

In the second part of this contribution to the fauna of the typical sawfly, Tenthredinidae in Turkey, the subfamilies Blennocampinae, Dolerinae, Nematinae and Selandrinae are discussed. Twenty-seven species in 13 genera of Blennocampinae, 7 species in 2 genera of Dolerinae, 9 species in 6 genera of Nematinae, and 4 species in 4 genera of Selandrinae, a total of 47 species, are recorded. Of these, 7 species were new to the Turkish fauna. New data on geographical distribution and host plants are given for some species. For each species, a chorotype is reported.

The, bighead goby is reported for the first time from the Turkish Eastern Black Sea coast in Kale (Taşlı ) Stream (Rize), Erenler Stream (Çayeli-Rize), Kantarlı Stream (Pazar-Rize), Fırtına Stream (Ardeşen-Rize), Işıklı Stream (Ardeşen-Rize), Çağlayan Stream (Fındıklı-Rize) and Yeşil Stream (Fındıklı-Rize). A total of 70 individuals from different sampling stations were caught by an electro-shocker. Systematic characteristics of this species were examined and then compared with those reported in previous studies.

The bird fauna of Termessos National Park, in south-central Anatolia about 37 km north-west of Antalya city centre, was studied between October 1998 and April 2000. In the study area, 113 species of forest and mountain birds, belonging to 32 families, were recorded. Their residence status is as follows: 50 residents (R), 40 summer (S) and 14 winter visitors (W), 5 vagrants (V) and 4 passage migrants (Pm). Through 10 monthly sampling, a total of 7434 water mites belonging to 24 species and 9 families from Lake Çapalı were caught and identified. Of these, Piona variabilis and Arrenurus batillifer are new records for the Turkish fauna. Besides the index of species diversity, frequency analysis and the ecological characters of the study area, constant, associated, euconstant, influent and accidental species were determined.

The morphometric measurements of 10 taxonomically important characters, and the coloration features of the 8 subspecies of Mertensiella luschani were investigated and statistical analyses were carried out. This study aimed to contribute to the knowledge of Turkish Malacostraca fauna by determining the Malacostraca (Crustacea) fauna of Yuvarlak Stream. Monthly sampling was performed at 10 stations along the stream between May 2001 and April 2002. Eleven taxa were determined; of these, 5 (Gammarus balcanicus, Gammarus longipedis, Echinogammarus antalyae, Corophium orientale and Orchestia platensis) belong to Amphipoda, 3 (Palaemonetes antennarius, Atyaephyra desmarestii orientalis and Potamon potamios) to Decapoda, 2 (Lekanesphaera hookeri and Cyathura carinata) to Isopoda and 1 (Diamysis mesohalobia mesohalobia) to Mysidacea.

Gambusia affinis, Baird & Girard, 1853, originally comes from North America and has been distributed all over the world for the biological control of mosquitoes. This study aimed to determine some biological properties, such as structure, age, growth and reproduction of the populations of G. affinis in Turkey. For this purpose, between November 1998 and October 1999, 2026 mosquitofish were caught in the wetlands of Fethiye-Akgöl, Dalaman and Ortaca in Muğla province in the western Mediterranean region of Turkey and the data found were compared. Introducing A New Approach To Estimating Red Meat Production In Turkey, Fahri̇ Yavuz, Carl R. Zulauf

A common concern with official estimates of red meat production in Turkey is that they underestimate the level of production. One of the frequently cited reasons is that unregulated slaughter is undercounted. This study uses an estimation method based on the biology of red meat production to examine the potential impact of this undercounting. The production estimates obtained for 1991-1998 using this biological-based method exceed the numbers estimated by official organizations, but fall within the range of estimates obtained from other proposed approaches to estimating red meat production.
