Selenium (Se)-deficient soils necessitate supplementation of this mineral to the diet of forage-grazing cattle. Functionally, Se is incorporated into selenoproteins, some of which function as important antioxidants. We have previously shown that the source of supplemental Se; inorganic (sodium selenite or sodium selenate; ISe), organic (selenomethionine or selenocysteine; OSe) or 1:1 mix of ISe and OSe (MIX), provided to Angus-cross cows affects concentrations of progesterone (P4) during the early luteal phase of the estrous cycle. In this study, we sought to investigate (1) the effect of form of Se on the expression of mRNA encoding selenoproteins in the corpus luteum …

20,25-Diazacholesterol As An Oral Contraceptive For Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Population Management, Paul B. Nash, Carol A. Furcolow, Kimberly S. Bynum, Christi A. Yoder, Lowell A. Miller, John J. Johnston

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies can become overcrowded, and the colonies, landscape, and people affected by them may benefit from controlled populations. Contraception is a method that may be useful, particularly where lethal control is inappropriate or illegal. We investigated if oral administration of 20,25-diazacholesterol (DiazaCon®), an inhibitor of cholesterol and reproductive steroid hormone production, could reduce reproductive success of treated black-tailed prairie dogs in a fi eld trial. Ten treatments of approximately 45-mg DiazaCon per black-tailed prairie dog yielded a 47% reduction of young:adult ratios compared to control sites. Over a 3-month period, desmosterol, a cholesterol …

Annual Cycle Of Serum Gonadal Steroids And Serum Lipids In Capoeta Capoeta Umbla, Güldenstaedt, 1772 (Pisces: Cyprinidae), Orhan Erdoğan, Hali̇l İbrahi̇m Hali̇loğlu, Abdulkadi̇r Çi̇ltaş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Seasonal changes in serum concentrations of the testosterone in males, 17\beta-estradiol in females and triglyceride and cholesterol in both sexes of Capoeta capoeta umbla were determined. Peak concentrations of testosterone (2.828 ± 0.278 ng/mL) and 17\beta-estradiol (3.182 ± 0.116 ng/mL) occurred in May. The concentrations of testosterone and 17b-estradiol were significantly correlated with the gonadosomatic index in both sexes. After the spawning period, steroid hormone levels significantly diminished (P < 0.05). The triglyceride concentration was highest in April (607.611 ± 30.146 mg/dL). The serum cholesterol level showed a rising trend until April and reached peak values during this month (393.000 ± 8.991 mg/dL). In the spawning month (May), a significant decrease was observed in triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations (P < 0.05). These results suggest that seasonal changes in both serum lipids and steroid hormones were associated with reproductive activity in C. c. umbla.
