Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Bovine milk, a rich source of proteins and fatty acids, has a beneficial impact on physicochemical and organoleptic properties. The current study was planned to identify oxytocin's effects on protein and fatty acid profiles of cow milk (the Sahiwal breed) at various lactation stages (early, middle, and late) under a controlled atmosphere and feeding inputs. Examination of milk protein and fatty acid profiles by urea polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry respectively revealed the significant effect (P < 0.01) of oxytocin during the cow's lactation stages. In electrophoretic patterns, casein (αs1-CN, αs2-CN, β-CN, and k-CN) and whey protein fractions (Ig, BSA, β-Lg, and α-La) appeared as low-intensity bands in oxytocin-injected milk when compared to the control. Reductions in concentrations of fatty acids C16:0 (25.00%) and C18:1 (21.60%) were observed in oxytocin-treated milk as compared to the control group (29.30% and 29.10%, respectively) at late lactation.

Effects Of Full-Fat Soybean Diet On Performance, Carcass Characteristics,And Fatty Acid Composition Of Hanwoo Steers, Sungil Kim, Jihong Lee, Sungkwon Park

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effect of dietary full-fat soybean on performance and carcass characteristics of Hanwoo steers was investigated. Thirty steers (653 ± 52.96 kg) were allotted to control and full-fat soybean groups with a 210-day comparative feedlot trial. Steers were fed either the basal finishing diet (control) or control plus 5% full-fat soybean, using Calan gates for individual intake measurement. There was no difference in BW, feed intake, carcass weight, backfat thickness, loin muscle area, or meat color between groups. The average daily gain was greater (P < 0.05) in the soybean group compared to the control group. Steers fed soybean showed a lower feed conversion ratio than the controls. Marbling in the soybean group was greater (P < 0.05) than that in the control group. Supplementary full-fat soybean increased (P < 0.05) crude fat but decreased (P < 0.05) crude protein content in the longissimus muscle. Full-fat soybean increased (P < 0.05) total unsaturated fatty acids, including the levels of oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acid but, consequently, decreased (P < 0.05) total saturated fatty acids. Levels of conjugated linoleic acid, and its major precursor trans-vaccenic acid, were significantly increased by soybean supplementation. Our results demonstrate that full-fat soybeans may offer a better way to produce healthier beef with increased unsaturated fatty acids.

Comparative Evaluation Of Sequence Analysis Of 16s Rrna And Rpobgenes For Identification Of Aquatic Mycobacteria, Fazel Pourahmad, Randolph Harvey Richards

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The nucleotide sequences of partial 16S rRNA and bacterial RNA polymerase ß-subunit (rpoB) genes for 57 mycobacterial strains were determined. Compared to the 16S rRNA gene sequences, variable regions were scattered along the whole fragment sequence, indicating that the rpoB gene is more polymorphic. Unlike 16S rRNA sequences, species variation was observed within M. fortuitum strains. The topology of the rpoB-based phylogenetic tree was almost the same as that of the 16S rRNA sequence analysis. These results suggest that the rpoB gene is a highly conserved gene, and taxonomical studies based on this gene may be comparable with similar studies …

Effect Of Different Extenders On Motility And Some Sperm Kinematics Parameters In Norduz Goat Semen, Koray Teki̇n, Ali̇ Daşkin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Use of computer-assisted sperm analyzers (CASAs) to evaluate sperm fertilizing ability has great importance for the artificial insemination industry. For motility evaluation, different CASA systems and diluents are being used. These assays are poor in predicting sperm fertility, because only the samples with markedly poor quality can be detected. However, there is not a unitary extender worldwide. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the postthaw kinetic parameters of curvilinear velocity (VCL), straight-line velocity (VSL), and average-path velocity (VAP) with two different extenders (skim milk, SM; Tris, TS). Semen was collected twice a week with an artificial vagina from four adult Norduz …

Hemopoiesis in the tench (Tinca tinca: Teleostei, Cyprinidae), a cyprinid fish that can be found within the entire territory of Eurasia, from France in the west to the Yenisei River in the east, has not yet been described. The aim of this research was analysis of hemopoiesis lineages in the pronephros of Tinca tinca (sampled from the Jablanicko Reservoir). Identification and cells measurements were done by using a light microscope (Olympus BX41) and an Olympus DP12 camera. Hemopoietic cells of the tench are divided into five different series that include erythropoietic, granulopoietic, lymphopoietic, thrombopoietic, and monopoietic cell series. Erythropoietic series …

Recently, some Brucella abortus were isolated from human and various livestock in Mongolia, and the classical biotyping and molecular detection methods (PCR assays, 16S rRNA sequencing analysis, and multilocus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA)) were applied to investigate them. Of the 16 isolates, nine and seven were confirmed as biovar (bv.) 3 and untyped by the classical biotyping assay, respectively. The phenotypic characteristics of the untyped isolates were consistent with those of the former B. abortus bv. 7, which is not included in the current Brucella taxonomy. Additionally, genus- and species-specific PCR supported that the untyped Mongolian isolates belonged …

Mycoplasmas cause the most severe and economically costly diseases of cattle throughout the world. In this study, Mycoplasma species were isolated from calves and cows with suspected mycoplasmosis in Holstein dairy cattle farms within 7 geographical regions of Turkey between May 2010 and December 2015. Mycoplasma infections were positive in 17 (80.9%) of 21 dairy cattle farms and the overall percentage was calculated as 32.1%. The highest isolation rate occurred in the Southeastern Anatolia Region (42.8%), and the lowest was observed in the Mediterranean Region (19.6%). In total, 172 Mycoplasma spp. were isolated from samples. Using PCR analysis, 149 (87.6%) …
