Journal of Marine Science and Technology
In stock assessment and fisheries management, the standardization of catch per unit effort (CPUE) is critical to derive an effective index of the abundance of exploited fish stocks. In addition to developing various statistical models, a method including the relative fishing power (RFP) of individual vessels has been developed from an intuition concept and applied to bottom trawl fisheries using logbookbased data. This is a convenient and traightforward approach for standardizing the catch-effort data of a fishery. The Pacific saury is a pelagic fish species, and its stock in the Northwest Pacific has been targeted by international fleets since the …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Sex steroids play a crucial role in gonadal sex differentiation in many nonmammalian vertebrates, including hermaphroditic teleosts. The current study investigates the mRNA expression levels of gonadal cyp19a1a, dmrt1, sf-1, dax-1 and 11β-hsd in the protogynous orange-spotted grouper, Epinephelus coioides, at certain stages during sex differentiation and sex change. Among the genes whose mRNA levels were determined through quantitative RT-PCR analysis, cyp19a1a was predominantly expressed in the ovary, and its expression was much lower in the testis. The level of cyp19a1a expressed at 150 dah was significantly high enough to trigger the pre-gyno female development of protogynous (subadult) orange-spotted grouper. …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology
The silky shark, Carcharhinus falciformis, is a common bycatch species of tuna and swordfish longline fishing in the Indian Ocean. The high value of its fins makes it one of the most heavily fished shark species in the world. Concern over declining populations and the uncertainty surrounding its population dynamics has increased the urgency of developing appropriate methods to assess its stock status. This study developed a two-sex stage-based structured matrix model with Monte Carlo simulations to examine silky shark demography and population dynamics. The simulations indicate that, without mortality from fishing, the stock will increase slightly (sex combined mean …

Chlorophyll Concentration Derived From Microwave Remote Sensing Measurements Using Artificial Neural Network Algorithm, Young-Heon Jo, Dae-Won Kim, Hyuna Kim
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Ocean color optic remote sensing has been used to estimate various biogeochemical constituents to monitor ocean environmental changes in coastal regions and global open oceans. However, the most problematic issue in utilizing ocean color measurements is cloud coverage. Thus, this study introduces a neural network (NN) algorithm to derive Chlorophyll a (Chl) concentrations, which are unavailable due to the presence of clouds. Because ocean color remote sensing depends on cloud coverage, microwave measurements, including sea-surface temperature, cloud, water vapor, precipitation, and winds, were used as inputs for the NN algorithm. Accordingly, the NN algorithm was designed to predict Chl using …

The Effects Of Gamma Irradiation Sterilization, Temperature, And Ph On The Antimicrobial Activity Of Epinecidin-1, Han-Ning Huang, Chang-Jer Wu, Jyh-Yih Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
This study examined how different processing conditions affected the antibacterial activity of epinecidin-1 alone or in combination with deionized distilled water or KY jelly and evaluated its activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a product development pipeline. High temperature and γ-irradiation (25 kGy) decreased antimicrobial activity of epinecidin-1, as determined by measuring minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs). However, epinecidin-1 exhibited high antimicrobial activity under low pH conditions. The pH stability and the wide spectrum of action against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) may make epinecidin-1 peptide a suitable drug candidate. This research demonstrates the …

Risk Maps And Coastal Defense Criteria In Taiwan, Wei-Po Huang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Lee-Hsueh Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
To promote sustainable development, the Coastal Zone Management Act prescribes that coastal areas should be divided into two levels of protection zones. However, the complexity and variety of coastal defenses and land use cannot be described completely by using these two levels alone. Coastal risk maps, based on natural and manmade characters of a region, showing different degrees of vulnerability and hazard potentials, can aid in making decisions. In this study, the criteria for coastal protection and land use in terms of risk maps were adopted. A tentative risk map was presented for the northern Kaohsiung City coastal area, Southwest …
