Seasonal Aspects Of The Biology, Distribution And Relative Abundance Of The Deep-Sea Red Crab Geryon Quinquedens Smith, In The Vicinity Of The Norfolk Canyon, Western North Atlantic, Paul A. Haefner Jr.

VIMS Articles

Deep-sea red crabs were collected from demersal trawl surveys of Norfolk-Canyon and an adjacent open slope area in the Chesapeake Bight of the western North Atlantic Ocean. The surveys were made in each of four seasons over a period of three years. The 2539 red crabs caught ranged from 16mm to 143 mm in carapace length (CL). Relationships between CL and carapace width (CW) were derived for 308 males and for 269 females. Wet weight to CL relationships were derived for 238 males and for 142 females. Red crabs were contagiously distributed within the total depth range of capture (200- …

Blue Crab Shedding Plants, W. A. Van Engel, Dale Ludi May 1978

Blue Crab Shedding Plants, W. A. Van Engel, Dale Ludi

Reports

Cool weather and two northeast storms, in April and May, are believed by Rappahannock River crab fishermen and shedders to have caused a three to four week delay in crabs reaching the early peeler stages of development. Fishermen are still setting crab pound nets (=peeler traps, fykes). Fishermen recall that prior to 12-15 years ago the first "run" of peeler crabs occurred on the full moon of late April or early May. Recently the "runs" have been later, but never as late as this year.

Beach Zone Fish Community Structure In The James River, Virglnia, Douglas W. Lipton, Jack G. Travelstead Jan 1978

Beach Zone Fish Community Structure In The James River, Virglnia, Douglas W. Lipton, Jack G. Travelstead

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

A seining survey of the fish fauna of the beach zone in the James River, Virginia, was conducted from July to December 1977. Weekly collections were made at 4 stations resulting in the capture of 17,602 individuals representing 36 species. Abundance and diversity were influenced by large catches of schooling and migratory species utilizing nearshore areas as a nursery ground. Freshwater species diversity peaked in August and September, while mesohaline species diversity peaked in July, September, and November. Cluster analysis was used to define 3 freshwater station groups representing warm, moderate, and cool water temperatures, but was not helpful in …

Deterioration Of Floy Fd-67 Internal Anchor Tags, M. Y. Hedgepeth, W. H. Kriete Jr., J. V. Merriner

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Yellow Floy FD-67 internal anchor tags were utilized in an experimental and field study of tag discoloration, tag legibility and fouling organisms. Most tags exhibited some degree of discoloration over time. The rate and extent of discoloration varied between two batches of tags purchased in different years. The legibility of a tag was not affected to a great extent by the degree of discoloration. Legends of some completely discolored tags were still readable. Fouling organisms eroded the vinylite covering and deteriorated the legends of some tags. Bryozoans, barnacles and tunicates were the most commonly encountered fouling organisms. Barnacles were the …

The Men All Singing : The Story Of Menhaden Fishing, John Frye

Books

The Men All Singing is a folk history as well as economic. It reaches back almost four centuries to tell of a little-known fishery that shares with cod the vista of our coastal life. Now the last decades of the twentieth century see great changes in all fisheries and our treatment of the waters that give so much of our food.

Effects Of Cornstarch And Dextrose On Oysters, Kenneth W. Turgeon, Dexter S. Haven Jan 1978

Effects Of Cornstarch And Dextrose On Oysters, Kenneth W. Turgeon, Dexter S. Haven

VIMS Articles

The growth and fattening of the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), has long been of interest to oyster biologists since the market value of oysters is directly related to the quantity and quality of "meat" obtained per bushel ( = 35.2 L) of harvested oysters. Much of the early work done on the growth and fattening of oysters attempted to demonstrate the superior nutritional value of specific planktonic organisms and detritus (MOORE & POPE, 1910; MARTIN, 1923, 1927a, 1927b, 1928; GAVARD, 1927; NELSON, 1947). MITCHELL ( I917) was the first to study the effects of carbohydrates of known composition …

The presentation will include the alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis), hickory shad (Alosa mediocris), American shad (Alosa sapidissima), striped bass (Morone saxatilis), Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus) and the shortnose sturgeon …

Movement Of 1970 Year Class Striped Bass Between Virginia, New York And New England, William H. Kriete Jr., John V. Merriner, Herbert M. Austin Jan 1978

Movement Of 1970 Year Class Striped Bass Between Virginia, New York And New England, William H. Kriete Jr., John V. Merriner, Herbert M. Austin

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Striped bass (Marone saxatilis) were tagged in Virginia beginning in 1968. The 1970 yearclass of striped bass was tagged both in Virginia and New York in 1972. Fish tagged in Virginia were returned from New York to Maine while fish tagged in New York were returned from the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. These data indicated that fish migrate from rivers in which they were spawned at different ages and that fish that migrate as 2 year olds remain together as a group until they are 3+ years. Therefore, within the Chesapeake Bay area there …

Growth And Survival Of Striped Bass And Striped Bass X White Perch Hybrids, J. Howard Kerby, Edwin B. Joseph Jan 1978

Growth And Survival Of Striped Bass And Striped Bass X White Perch Hybrids, J. Howard Kerby, Edwin B. Joseph

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Experiments comparing growth and survival of striped bass (Morvne saxatilis) and striped bass female X white perch (M. americana) male hybrids indicated the hybrids were hardier than striped bass under the same experimental conditions. Striped bass exhibited health problems and resulting mortality which were not evident in the hybrids. Overall survival of striped bass in 2 replicate experiments was 42.5% after II months. whereas that of the hybrids was 84.2%. Striped bass and hybrid growth patterns were similar, but striped bass grew somewhat more rapidly than the latter. Mean specific (instantaneous) growth rates were roughly similar throughout the study. with …

A Survey Of The Shellfish Resources Adjacent To Croaker Landing In The York River, Virginia, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall Jan 1978

A Survey Of The Shellfish Resources Adjacent To Croaker Landing In The York River, Virginia, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

From 7 March 1978 through 14 March 1978, an area of the bottom in the York River around Croaker Landing was studied to define the existing shellfish resource. The study was conducted at the request of the Division of Parks of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Economic Development in conjunction with the construction of the York River State Park. Comparison of this study with a post-dredging assessment will provide a measure of the possible impact of dredging activities on the surrounding bottom.
